I was still editing things; since all the broken images were pointing to CRX's missing account, and it wasn't a global thing back then. =P

If there's anyone I missed, please do tell, though. Fun fact, though, it was based off mine. So there was no need to actually do what I did, I just had to redo it slightly and reupload... =P Oh well. xP Was made better anyway. And I have the source if we reopen Featured Member...

MsRR: Most politicians on both sides say we need universal healthcare, which is not equality of opportunity. Equality of opportunity for medical care would lead to only the rich getting care. Besides (on a separate rant), equality of opportunity doesn't actually exist. People have different levels of education, different access to local jobs, different parents, different genetics, and so on.

I'm not favoring Obamacare. It's a terrible solution, but the problems it's supposed to solve are pretty bad. Namely, medical costs aren't fairly distributed, and we're running a deficit.

What do you think a better system for healthcare would be? I'm honestly curious, because I haven't thought about this issue very much.

What we need is
1. NO MORE huge malpractice suits that drive up insurance costs
2. A very simple system to give medical providers awriteoff on all LEGITIMATELY needy patients. THese will need to be screened WAY better than food stamps are.
3. Citizens willing to take responsibility for their own lives.
4 Lower drug costs. That will mean tax reductions for projects researching live saving and life changing drugs. The drugs that don't always make big money.

Universal healthcare is the worst possible option. I have adult friends in the UK, Ireland, and elsewhere.. If you have a sick baby in the middle of the night, and unexplained but brutal pain, or any of the ills that befall our older people you do not want Universal Health Care.
And you definitely do not want single payer.. which is what the govt is actually pushing for from what I can see.

As for politicians.. they do not work for us in most cases. And they DID vote to EXEMPT THEMSELVES.. so there's that.
Google universal healthcare issues.. read both sides.

Okay, so it looks like we agree on most things.
1. Definitely agree
2. Agree, but it's probably not feasible. It's hard to ensure proper screening when dealing with thousands or millions of people
3. Agree, but definitely not feasible Tongue If all citizens were educated and responsible, we wouldn't need laws at all
4. This would be nice, but how do we just lower drug costs? I haven't looked into this issue at all before, but I'm (probably naively) assuming the cost is due to the difficulty in making and properly testing drugs

If there's no universal healthcare, what happens when a poor person needs treatment? When I said "universal healthcare" initially, I just meant that everyone could get care, not necessarily from the same place or in the same way--maybe we meant slightly different things.

If we stop giving out trophies for showing up, and stop making welfare so rich and rewarding, maybe someday people will be more responsible for themselves.

Screening is easy... and cheap to free.
Set the income level criteria, and allow the two or three oldest churches (or synagogues) in each town or city to screen all poor in that city or town for true neediness. I say oldest so new churches wouldn't pop up to cheat.  They are already set up to help the poor.  Once verified the legitimately in need of healthcare at no or lo cost get free visits and the cost comes from the newly cleaned up welfare budget.  Working poor would get the same deal. Working almost poor would have a small copay.. The doctor could simply be reimbursed by a full deduction on their income tax for the common cost ( what the other insurance companies pay) No extra govt dept need be made. People would not need to belong to a church to apply, any more than they do now to use a soup kitchen.

While there are lots of issues with welfare, remember that 39% of homeless people are under 18. Over a quarter of homeless people are mentally ill. Over 80% of homeless people are only there for a few months. So There are actually very few people who genuinely make a living by gaming the system.  http://www.nationalhomeless.org/factsheets/who.html

Screening is easy if it's just screening ten people, but when a hospital screens a thousand people its bound to make mistakes. Like you said, size isn't efficient, and the ratio of doctors to patients won't allow for small scale health providers. But anyway, we both agree that good screening is idealistically a good thing.

I start disagreeing when you bring in religious institutions. My personal experiences with churches have not been good, and I also believe in separation of church and state. It's too easy for bias to creep in. Screening should either be done by the government or by insurance companies with some government oversight to prevent malpractice. You also say that doctors can be reimbursed by a tax deduction, isn't that basically a government insurance system? People who can't pay themselves are paid for by tax breaks.

The government SUCKS at screening, and the churches already do it. The only separation of church and state is that the government cannot mandate a state religion.  We have freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. Churches would include institutions like the salvation army, and maybe the red cross. They are all already skilled at doing these things. We are talking about financial screening to provide access to service.
Doctors only should do medical screening. NOT insurance companies or the govt EVER.

The whole point is to not have the govt OR the insurance companies screening or running things.

There is absolutely no reason to push small medical practices out and more than there is to push small businesses out. I for one do not want Walmart healthcare.. sorry. People of all ages get the best healthcare when the doctor and nurse recognize their name or face..

I am well aware of the numbers of homeless teens. For many many years I sponsored a couple of teens a semester to the community college, and if they did well they got another semester till they graduated. Several of those were homeless. Others were teen parents.

There are also a HUGE number of homeless vets.. which is a dang shame on us!

And there ARE a HUGE HUMONGEOUS population of people who have been gaming welfare for years.. sorry.  I personally know of several families right here in Portland who have been on welfare for generations without ever working a day. We are talking great grandmother, grandmother right on down. They think their life shill is making babies..
So maybe we need to redefine gaming.
Many homeless people remain homeless because they do not game.
And the other population to consider are the elderly poor. But not today, as I am very tired.

Maybe we should have a debate/discussion topid for this stuff??

Anyone on Steam need a "GlaDOS" trading card from Portal 2?  I need anything other than "The Lab" (though do note I'm still waiting for one more card to drop, so there's that).
