a) personal choice. i find it vaguely annoying and entirely unused on all computers i've used it on. maybe if i had an ATI card, and was a gamer.....

b) theoretical, on-paper speed does not always equate to real-world performance. I havn't used any of the super-high end Radeons, but i've found a slightly weaker GeForce gives pretty much equal performance, with less hassle. ATIs are a pain to get working right, Nvidias are an install-and-forget (unless there's something you want to mess with)

b-2) yeah, AMD CPUs tend to disappoint.

I still haven't made the total jump; but I am running VMs of Ubuntu 10.04, and Knoppix latest version(Or, last latest version if it's updated recently). I am definitely considering Mint, but given my computer, I'm kinda waiting for further testing. Seems to work good, though I'm avoiding the latest versions of Ubuntu at all costs. Unity fails. -_-' Or, at least, runs so slowly on my computer(AND on a VM, AND with my computer specs), that it's just not usable. Heck, the OS takes up so much RAM that I can barely launch Firefox. xD

I'm kinda wanting a laptop for actual Linux usage; that way I can do a dual partition, and then just go and run a dual-boot. Right now, the computer I use, while it's technically mine in terms of usage, is the family computer, so I can't just go and switch to Linux when I feel like it, no matter how similar it all feels. =P(Though, that would be funny, switch to Linux, install the Mozilla stuff, and see how long it takes for people to realize they aren't using Windows. =P)

But yeah, I've been messing with Linux stuff for a while now, and while I haven't exactly installed a new OS to the computer itself, I have a few of the installers ready, either for use on a VM, or for if I just get that tired of Windows. =P But again, it'll likely be a long time before that happens.

Goal when I get a job: Save money for a laptop. Next goal: Save money for a desktop I can actually do stuff from this decade on. =P

/EDIT: Now, that all said, I probably wouldn't make the full jump until I had an alternate way to listen to music on Linux. Not going near iTunes, one other I know of probably wouldn't work, and I know Winamp's Linux version is way too outdated to be usable at all(And probably isn't even available anymore). That just leaves the built-in ones, and while they might be good, Banshee is fail, mostly because it drew the remaining few resources I had on my VM computer, between Unity, Konquest, and Banshee itself. Stumbled over the song I tried to play, too; and this was when the VM was running off the computer's hard drive itself, and not my External Hard Drive. =P
