Algebra's got to be one of the most useless things that is taught at school.

You will need to know whatever x/y are in real life, and if you don't, depending on what field you're in, you might be endangering lives fiddling about trying to find out a number you should already know. Letters are for writing with. The only person that would say algebra is useful is the extremely rare person who is so in love with maths they'd want to marry it. Good luck endangering lives if you think algebra's useful. I prefer people who know the numbers they need to know.
