Title: The Gimp
Post by: Easy899 on June 26, 2008, 09:20:38 am
If you still use Microsoft Paint for your photo editing, It's time for an upgrade. Switch to the Gimp! It stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It was created by a team of open-source programers, and Windows and Mac installers are now availible. http://www.gimp.org/ (http://www.gimp.org/) is the homepage. To get Windows installers, go to http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/ (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/). You have to download the help files seperately. The Gimp has all features of MS Paint, including some other features, like filters that make text chromed, and even neon text. You can save images to all sorts of formats, including .xcf, Gimp's native file format. It's way better than Paint.

PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO PM ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

Tip: to make an image transparent, refer to this (http://www.fabiovisentin.com/tutorial/GIMP_transparent_image/gimp_how_to_make_transparent_image.asp) tutorial. I found it on Google, so if you have any questions you might want to search Google first. By the way, you can also select peices of an image using other tools, too.

To animate an image, open the first frame of animation and open the layers dialog (ctrl+L). Next click on File>Open as Layers, and open all of the other frames of animation. You will see them in the layer dialog. Arrange them in the correct order if you haven't allready. Next, right click on a layer and click "edit layer attributes". To set the speed: At the end of the layer's name, type in (100ms) with the parentheses. The MS means Milliseconds and 100 is the speed. A higher number means it will go faster, and vice versa. Once you are done with ajusting the speed, go to File>Save As. Save it as a gif file. You will be prompted to either save as animation (do this) or merge layers. If it asks you to convert to indexed or grayscale, choose indexed. This won't change your current image. Also, if you want all of your frames of animation at the same speed, try selecting the speed when you save in the end (the screen where it asks you if you want to add a gif comment, etc.)

Photos demonstrating the Gimp's power will come soon, or later. :P Hey, just look in Google, or look at the yellow supernova in the Light Nova skin.

I myself have heard a lot about this. If you want Ps, but don't have $700, GET GIMP!

I've used this. In fact, I'm just waiting until I can get it to get it. ... Of course, I could pop in my Boot CD for Ubuntu, but that takes a while to load and is a little laggy and crashes/freezes sometimes. Other than that(Maybe it's because of it being on CD), that's good too... But that's for a Linux topic or something :P

I just downloaded it... But I'm not really understanding it... :-\

I have known about GIMP for quite a while now. I have Photoshop though so I don't need it.

And as for people like DB5000 who don't fully understand it, start simpler. Ever heard of Paint.NET? It's like Paint only much better. After you become good with Paint.NET, try GIMP.

Yeah... I just plain don't know how to use it...

Maybe I should give it a second try...

My CS3 Extended was $1K, but my dad is a teacher so we get a hardcore discount. :P

Anyone know how to animate stuff in The GIMP, if it's possible?

Title: Re: The Gimp

Yes, it's possible. I made my avatar that way. All you have to do is: Open the first frame of animation. Then click File<Open As Layers. Select the pictures representing the other frames of animation. After that open the layers dialog (Ctrl+L) and arrange them in animation order. Next, save as a GIF file. You will be prompted to either save as an animation or flatten the image since GIF files can't have more than one layer unless it's an animation. You may also be asked to convert it to grayscale or indexed clolor modes if your current color mode is RGB*. Convert it to indexed.

Or you could have just Googled "Gimp Animation". :P

*RGB color mode is all of the colors, grayscale is black and white, and indexed is where you choose from a range of colors on a platte, and can only use those colors.

Or just buy Ulead GIF Animator. It's great. Try it. ;) If you can't buy it, try the demo. Ulead GIF Animator even has animation effects such as diamond (makes frames turn in a diamond shape before revealing themselves), page turn (makes it as if you're turning pages from a book, really good effect), TV turn off (makes an effect as if a TV is turning off) and many other effects.

Or if you want a free, really simple, limited features software then try Microsoft GIF Animator.

I just got GIMP and went experimenting and came up with my new banner.

I would probably have split the gradient down the middle of the fig, but other than that it's not bad.

You can do that?

I meant have the right half of the banner go to black, the left to white.

I started using Gimp a few days ago. It's good for picture editing, but not easy to use. I like Paint better for making my own drawings from scratch still.

It's a Paint-type Program. GNU Image Manipulation Program is what it stands for.

A test of what I did with it:

Not the best thing in the world, but It was created a long time ago.

Both of my sigs were made with gimp...the animation and the space month banner.

Title: GIMP Help
Post by: Tommy_60 on December 16, 2009, 04:21:07 pm
Hi, I could use some help with Gimp 2.  I tried to change my current avatar on it(With the sharpness control).  I saved it onto a file on my comp, but when I uploaded it here,it said that it was too big to fit!  It was the same size as you see it here!

Also, how do you make things glow?

You can use the "neon" alpha-to-logo, or you can make it the old fashioned way.

when it says its 2 big. it might not be talking abou the size of the pic but howmemory is inside it. as in ok do this find out on here how big it can be then when you save it then pull the slider it gives down and it should fix it.

I occasionally use gimp for backgrounds. I'm really not that fond of it, however.
Guess I'm too accustomed to MS Paint.

It's good for more than backgrounds though, and the path tool can make your life a lot easier in free-style drawing.

I've used it to make all of my more recent and current animations and graphics.
