What version of the .Net Framework do you have?
What registry cleaner do you use?
When did this start?

EDIT: Also, check the Event Log. Look at every Warning and Error that's happened recently, and post any that you think might be related to the error.

;D found a microsoft support utility that fixed this. should'a googled more before posting. somehow using it to remove Logitech Setpoint from startup (a program i've had for years, measures my mouse's battery) made the issue go away. weird, but w/e.

in answer to your questions:
-latest version
-ccleaner's built in one
-today, bout 40 min ago

....is that the event center in w7?

1: 4?
2: CCleaner's built in Registry cleaner is horrible. it misses most errors and has a ton of false positives. Use Glary Utilities for registry cleaning.
4: No. Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools (Located in System & Maintenance) -> Event Viewer.

Also, if you use CCleaner, try downloading CCEnhancer. http://singularlabs.com/software/ccenhancer/download/

1: think so. :P
2: this? http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/registry-repair/
5: ooh, nice. =D

2: I think this (http://www.glarysoft.com/products/utilities/glary-utilities/download/) is better. It has a registry cleaner, a registry defragger, a startup manager...

An adblocker I removed months ago >_>

I wiped my computer of it really well, but apparently I missed something?

Hmm... Maybe it somehow got back in, and that's what's causing all this? That sounds weird...

Try safe mode.  That's how I get around Norton.

Hmm... Yeah, something's got you it sounds like. What exactly I have no clue, but if it's starting to prevent you form going places, that sounds fishy.

....to do what?

i removed it from my computer, uninstalled, registry cleaned, and a search of my HDD for files with the program name (or developer name) came up with zero results. :/ out of ideas here.

Yeah, that's the whole question here... What is this thing that's causing the problem? Is it a fragment of that adblocker that's been left behind somehow, and if so, where's it hiding?

This is an utterly strange thing. Can you access any AV program download sites?(Like, obviously the good ones. =P)

I actually might have an idea as to why that happened.

I don't think it's exactly the same situation as the one my brother got caught into, but first I have a question; did this happen after you recieved an update for Windows 7?

Title: Re: Trying to fix my laptop! Help?
Post by: mtmerrick on December 22, 2011, 02:29:41 pm
no, this is because of a stupid program >_>

Hmm.... Have you tried completely reinstalling Windows 7?

I know why you can't access Cnet. They recently got into a lot of trouble for intentionally adding Malware to programs on their site. Use one of the other download options.

Yeah, that is true, actually. they pretty much added whatever they wanted into downloads; even if the creator didn't want that, more or less.

Title: Re: Trying to fix my laptop! Help?
Post by: The Truth on December 22, 2011, 02:55:13 pm
Yeah. Cnet has been planting adware and viruses inside the installers of programs hosted on it.
Most antivirus programs now detect the Cnet installer as a virus, and most "safe browsing" programs block it.

And they just get away with it??

Title: Re: Trying to fix my laptop! Help?
Post by: The Truth on December 22, 2011, 03:08:53 pm
Well, a lot of customers (and software makers) are furious, but so far, Cnet has gotten away with it.

They might be 'getting away with it', but, big tech sites have been reporting about it. So while they might 'get away with it', the portion of people who read those sites likely won't go there to get stuff. =P

Very good info.

But.... *repeatedly pokes BOT button*

Still doesn't change the fact that RemoveAds is still functional, after I uninstalled it. >_>

And its obviously not a Cnet virus because its blocking Cnet. :P

Where did you get the program.. I cannot find any info on it at all.

this is the dev website. its under downloads.
http://www.majorshare.com/

i heard about it here of all places.
http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-57343555-285/how-to-remove-ads-from-im-clients/

Title: Re: Trying to fix my laptop! Help?

But you downloaded it from the site, or did you download it from CNET?

EDIT:
Majorshare has a support link.
And if you downloaded from cnet you should include that in your ticket.

i left a them an email a few days ago - no response so far.

i always prefer to download programs/apps via the developer's site over a third party (with obvious exceptions of steam, android market, ect)

Well that's a good practice, it would seem.

!!!

Got an email back from the developer, and it fixed it! I'll bold the part that did the trick.

Quote
Hello Matthew, sorry to hear that and also sorry for your 1 Star in Cnet (: this is a freeware software, as it says it comes with absolutely no  support, but i'm still trying to help my software's users.

I released a new version of RemoveAds (v1.1) almos a week ago but its recently approved on CNET.

There was no disable feature on the first version, accually i was forgot to add this feature (:

New version 1.1 comes with that feature but, it uses a backup file that located in RemoveAds folder.

*****In order to do disable that old version please follow these steps:

- If you did not delete "C:\Program Files\RemoveAds" folder manullay, there will be a file named "backup.ads".
(if you can't see the extension ".ads" first complete these stepls: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensions)
- Rename this "backup.ads" file as "hosts" (remove the file extension ".ads").
- Copy that file.
- Go to: "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" there will be "hosts" file too.
- Pastle renamed "hosts" file here and replace it with existing "hosts" file.

After these steps, it will go back to normal few minutes later.

*****Considering if you removed remaining files in "C:\Program Files\RemoveAds".
- In this case go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc". Open hosts file with notepad and remove all the lines which begins with 184. (do not delete that hosts file)

If you have any further questions you can reply this email.

Sincerely,
-Gurkan Dilmen]Hello Matthew, sorry to hear that and also sorry for your 1 Star in Cnet (: this is a freeware software, as it says it comes with absolutely no  support, but i'm still trying to help my software's users.
