Very interesting. Looking forwards to seeing where this goes.

Either one of you can post now, btw.

Question: can the symbiotes tap into a human's brain while they're asleep and steal knowledge/memories without actually merging with them?  (I.E. host is unsuitable, but the symbiote needs their knowledge before moving to a new host.)

Yes. That's what tylers symboiant did to him before thy merged. But they have to be outside of a human host to do so. Nerve-covered sharp legs straight into the spinal cord. Due to the syboyants.... let's say venom, the wounds heal in about 4 hours.

Or they can do a weak mental probe. But that's not that effective and only works on weak minded individuals. They're really more empaths than telepaths.

One last question: how long can a symbiote live outside the host?  The backstory requires the symbiont draining knowledge from two different individuals, and mentally probing a third (this is all distant past).  One is a scientist who was working on [REDACTED], possibly the one who killed the previous host after the mental probing of the third person, and the second one is a politician who has been arrested and sentenced to execution for sparking a series of incidents that led to a horrific massacre.  I need to know if it happened during one period between hosts or across two different such periods.  (I.E. Mental probe of Person 3, death, Knowledge probe Person 1, Knowledge probe person 2, new host vs. Mental probe of Person 3, death, Knowledge probe Person 1, new host, death, knowledge probe person 2, new host)

they can live almost indefinitely outside a human host but they are very physically vulnerable. after about a month in normal conditions their exoskeletons and nerve'd claws start to shrivel, unless they stay moist (the human body is plenty moist enough) or in water. they prefer freshwater especially swamps, though saltwater or even a bathtub will do.

OK, profile is ready.  I'm still working on some backstory, but I think I'm ready to start.

Flipz:
Species: Symbiotic Hybrid
Name: Regulus
Human Name: Amarus Zagrene
Profession: theoretical physicist, nobleman.
Appearance: Pale-skinned,  just over six feet tall, with messy brown hair and an omnipresent smirk, Zagrene's other features are fairly nondescript.  Whether this is due to actual bland appearance or Regulus' tendency to vanish from others' memories remains to be seen.
Style: The most stylish dark crimson body armor chestplate money can buy.  Regulus has made modern armor fashionable--a good thing, considering the high lethal turnover rate for personnel at his facility.  He wears sleek, dark blue slacks, with his I.D. and a few other implements hanging from his belt.
Bio: For decades, perhaps centuries, Regulus has been pursuing perhaps the most dangerous and insane scientific goal ever known to intelligent life.  For the past six generations, however, he slowed his research, and chose to remain within the male line of a single noble family, one he named "Regulus" in honor of himself.  When his most recent host was killed, his son was still too young to safely join, so instead Regulus selected his former host's closest friend, a writer by the name of Amarus Zagrene.  As guardian of young Arthur (and as specified in the late Lord Regulus' will), Zagrene is considered a full-fledged member of the noble family and retains the title of Lord Regulus.

I'm not normally one to toot my own horn, but I have to say I am VERY pleased with my reply to Viktor in the RPG just now.  Especially considering I still have no idea of the actual answer to that question. XD :P

xD

Btw, temporary hosts are plenty possible, but disconnecting before a merege is complete really disorients a syboyant. They usually choose to kill the temp hosts as they'd go crazy, and know too much otherwise.

Yeah, but I need Dr. Allen later. :P  But in-character, Regulus couldn't afford for Dr. Allen to go missing, the wrong people would notice and he wouldn't have time to get to the surface.

Next time it'll be worse, he'll be less prepared for the situation, so he won't be able to do as well.  Fortunately for Regulus, the next subject's gonna die anyway, which is why he has to rush things.

(Sorry to double-post)
OOC: that was awesome.

Which part, the Wikipedia article, or the flashback? ;D

I spent the better part of an hour on the WP article, the flashback was basically writing by the seat of my pants. :P

the flashback was really cool, but the wiki article is amazing. very authentic.

 ;D ;D ;D

I waded through a lot of WP template pages and copied the text from the relevant pages.  I would have done the "notice" boxes completely accurately, but I couldn't figure out the BBCode to do that, and the images for those boxes are maunally resized on-page, which I don't know how to do here, either.

Also, in case anyone's wondering, the Duke of Regulus was created, secretly, just before the Duke of Sutherland, meaning it is second ranked among all the dukes in the peerage of the U.K., but below the royal dukes, the dukes of England, Scotland, Great Britain, and Ireland (with the exception of the Duke of Abercorn, which it outranks).

Too bad the title of "Duke" carries little meaning these days :/

Too bad the title of "Duke" carries little meaning these days :/

Actually, it's a sort of behind-the-scenes power.  Sure, the average commoner won't take particular notice of a duke, but in the political arena they're the ones who everyone owes favors of one kind or another to.  It's a sort of covert, hidden society that exists even in the U.S., but in the U.S. it's linked more directly to either low-publicity high-power government bureaucracy positions or to corporate high-rollers. ;)

Species: Symbiotic Hybrid
Name: Omega
Human Name: Kaze Hikari
Profession: Vigilante attacker
Age (human): 20
Gender: Male
Appearance: Kaze has brown messy hair, and dark green eyes typically. He is approximately 6 foot 1, and usually has a neutral expression. He usually wears a black t-shirt with a green and blue stripe, along with blue jeans. Kaze also typically wears glasses, even though Omega has no need for them to be used.
Other: Omega allows Kaze's personality to be in control for most of the time, a rarity among symbiotes, however, when needed, he will take over. This is typically signified by Kaze's eyes turning a reddish colour, along with potentially Omega tossing the glasses to the side, not caring if they break or not.
Kaze is also a part of the CIA, which is partly how he has been able to keep the rest of America from finding out too much about the Symbiotes.

I tried. I really did. But in the end, I figured that this would be perfect, if only because there's prior art for a Kaze and Omega. This is not the same two from DoaH, though, just to mention. =P

additional info on symboyants:

symboyants are loners by nature. however, humans are social creatures. mating is viewed by the symboyants as something only for survival, but to humans picking a mate means much more. after several (roughly 10) hosts, symboyants will start to look for a mate. after they find a mate, they develop a strong bond and stay together the rest of their natural lives, which is almost forever.

symboyants have incredibly strong shells, but after some time out of a moist environment (a human torso is plenty moist enough, as is a bucket of water) their shells start to dry out and become brittle. if a symboyant dries out completely it will die. for this reason symboyants and their hosts ten to avoid deserts. they also have small gaps between their shells which expose vulnerable tissue, and a heavy gunshot (shotgun, semi-automatic rifle, ect) will shatter their shells.

they come in various dark colors, though black is most common, have 10 legs, and 4 eyes on stalks. an average body size is about 2.5 feel long and about 6" in diameter.

Quick question, does the Symbiote need to be fully submerged, or could one part be outside of the part, like the head or so?

Also, would it be theoretically possible to have them be the 'center' of a robot, with a bucket of water inside so that they didn't die? Just curious on that matter. =P

Title: Re: Symbiosis [Signup/Discussion]

Well then the head wouldn't dry out :P

And theoritacally, I guess. Same concept as a human in a mecha.

Oh, this ought to be fun, then. >=D I think I have a way to get KZ over to California. =P

For fun, the upcoming character will be insane, too.

Species: Symbiote
Name: Caan
Code-name: Ironside
Profession: 'Bug exterminator'.
Age: Millenia old.
Robot Appearance: Image Link. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/69/Dalek_2010_Redesign.jpg)
Bio: This Symbiote has had many different human hosts... However, a couple hosts back, he unluckily managed to pick up a serial killer for his host purely by accident, and took on his traits, which he carried over to future hosts. The next problem was that the next one was insane. Obviously, he at least realized that was a problem after that one died, however, he knew he couldn't risk actually fusing with another human, so instead, he instructed a scientist to make a bug exterminator robot, complete with toxic spray and a relatively low powered laser, which could have it's temperature output increased for a more lethal laser; and to have a bucket of water placed inside, 'just in case'. The scientist, however, never realized that the unseen 'alien' would kill him after the creature was successfully inside the creation, which is precisely what happened. Even as the scientist fell to the ground with a singed hole in the center of his chest, the psychopathic creature made his way out of the lab, using advanced stair-climbing techniques to get out, making sure that stairs did not bother his new shell.

Yes, I just did that. >=D

This should be awesome. >=D KZ will know exactly what I'm talking about, and I personally expect some recognition when Caan(A Dalek's name, just like Ironside really is a codename for the Daleks) runs into Daniel. This will just be really fun, and I can't believe I never thought of it sooner. xD

Does it yell 'EXTERMINATE' when it kills things, too?

I knew that would be a Dalek reference as soon as I read the name 'Caan' and the codename 'Ironside'.

Its first line in the RPG should totally be 'Would you like some tea?'

:P

I'm going to have another character.

Species: Symboyant
Name Podrax
Age: Eight Centuries
Bio: This Symboyant has lived a very odd life. It has had fifteen hosts, and now it's looking for its sixteenth host. Once it sets its eyes on a potential host, it never stops aiming to get into them. One of its hosts was a King, another was a President of the United States. It lurks in the shadows, and it always finds a way. Even if it has to kill. Or do the symboyant equivalent of suicide. However, unlike many others, this Symboyant is also terrible at knowing the signs of symbiosis.
