Title: Mindstorms EV3 [Updated With Videos]
Post by: mtmerrick on January 06, 2013, 11:58:10 pm
(http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2013/01/lego-mindstorms-ev3-1357509014.jpg)

CES hasn't even begun, but new companies are already having press conferences to announce new products.  The one company I truly didn't expect to have a presence at CES, however,  was Lego.

In a surprising turn off events, Lego took the opportunity of CES to announce the new Mindstorms set,  named Mindstorms EV3.

Mindstorms EV3 apparently runs on a custom Linux OS, and is designed to be easily controlled and programmed via Android or iOS. The new intelligence brick also features an SD card slot and the ability to do basic programming from the brick itself. Lego also seemsto be pushing the infrared port as a impressive new feature.

I'm in Vegas right now, having a good time while I wait for the showroom floor to open on Tuesday. Once I'm there I'll decently be checking this out further and reporting back to you guys, and talking lots of pictures/video, so stay tuned!
(I bet Lego doesn't expect a lot of AFOLs on the showroom floor =P )

The original press release can be found at the link below:

Hmm, that actually sounds very interesting. I wonder if it still keeps the same programming style? It does sound cool, though; and the custom Linux OS sounds like it could be fun to mess around with. =D

If possible, could you try and get some info on the programming for me? From the lo-res shots it looks completely different from the NXT-G, but I couldn't make out any details. Also any shots of the EV3 screen would be awesome. Alright, I'll stop with the requests. You enjoy yourself down there and thanks for volunteering to take some pics!

Thanks for adding this, Red. Silly me....

Way too cool. Bummer though that you cannot directly program from iPad... I was looking forward to a feature like that. Nonetheless, I will seriously consider getting one.

Gah! Now I can't decide between educational or retail versions! I knew the gyro could be used for measuring tilts, but I had no idea about the tuning capabilities! And that ball castor looks really awesome! When he went into the motor dimensions, I flipped out! I remember starting out with NXT motors by sending a beam from the drive axel to the connection on the back end, obviously breaking geometry rules. It will make gearing so much easier to have a linear connection. Thanks again for posting these videos! Better in depth discussion than any of the big guy reporters.
