Title: Homework Help Issues Post by: B~T on February 21, 2010, 03:31:18 pm Today, a person I know IRL asked me this on Facebook:
"What is the answer to question #4, 5, and 6?" I replied that the answers were obvious, since you have to look at the graphs for the answer, but he/she gave me his/her answer and badgered me with: "Is it right?" "Is it right?" I told him/her to look at the graphs again, and he/she gave up. I did not reply my own answers to the questions, because they either require you to think by yourself or are given in the graph. This person who asked me this is in an Honors class, meaning you have to think more (yes, I am in his/her class). In addition, just because I am smart does not mean I am right all the time, so he/she could be copying off answers that are wrong if I had given him/her the answers. Also, notice that he/she asked for the answers to the questions, not for help on the questions. Had he/she asked something such as "I need help on Questions 4, 5, and 6, I would have given him/her advice on how to tackle the problem. Really, his/her struggle to think outside the box can catch up to him/her in his/her later years of education and bite him/her. Anyways, I do have some regrets since I did not explain why I did not give him/her my own answers, and perhaps he/she might be upset at me for not giving him/her my answers. Unfortunately, he/she is not the only person who asks for answers on homework. There are others I know IRL who ask for homework answers, which disappoints me. Is it the right choice? In my opinion, I have mostly done the right thing, because I have many reasons above as to why I did not give him/her my answers. I refuse to give a direct answer to any problem, although I'll happily guide them through the steps to solve it.

The question I usually ask when asked for an answer is.."where are you having a problem?" If they give me a wrong answer, I ask.. what steps did you take to get to that answer?? In that way, you can truly help them, without impeding their ability to learn for themselves. BTW I feel the same way about clicks, items and IRL money.. I will help anyone who is trying.. IF they are trying. |
