Title: Backing up Firefox History and Passwords?
Post by: The Truth on April 22, 2010, 05:17:53 pm
due to an odd error in About:Config that I cannot fix, I need to delete Firefox and all of its data. I can get my addons back, but I don't want to lose my Browsing History or Saved Passwords. Where on the C/ drive are these files stored? I want to back them up. Please help?

I'm not quite sure; I'm wondering that myself so when I upgrade all the time I don't have to manually import every little thing.

I'd rather live with the glitch than lose all that data...

What's in the history you want to keep?

....make three hundred bookmarks?  :o and mess up my perfectly organized bookmarks menu?  :o

Plus, sometimes, I'll think of a site I saw several months ago, type in what I remember, and Firefox finds it for me! I don't want to lose that.

True.

Or do what I do and make tons of folders for them.(I think I may easily have 300 bookmarks. =P)

or, I could find the folder that contains the history, which brings us in a full circle back to post #1. =P

Or that too. =P However, I have no idea where to find it; and it's likely in a file, not a folder. =P

Yayz then I think I can help you!

1. first make sure you can view hidden files.
2. open up your hard drive
3. select Users
4. select the username you're using
5. Open App Data (this is a hidden file)
6. Open up the roaming folder
7. find Mozilla folder
8. select the Firefox folder
9. Open the profiles folder
10. locate the folder 29hkakxl.default
11. Open it, then click on history.

And there you go!

It's called wytwdhtk.default. However, there is no History file (or folder) in it.

Firefox stores the history data in a file appropriately called “history.dat”; this file can be found in the Firefox Profile folder.

XP users, something like this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\
Owner\Application Data\
Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
h96641qz.default\history.dat

Vista users, something like this location:
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\
Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
29hkakxl.default\
history.dat

Some of the folders may be hidden.

If that does not work, system restore to last working configuration.

he just needs to back up his history files... I'd say copy the whole profiles folder to another location, and hope for the best =/

Well, he asked where the files were... and that's it.

But doing a simple system restore to a point before the problem takes less than 5 minutes in most cases.

But that would also back up the glitch. the glitch is in the profiles folder.

....the glitch started at least six months ago.

If you uninstall FF it will ask you if you want to save your settings... or would that also save the error?

Yes, that would also save the error. :'(

That's the glitch. About:Config seems to have been locked. I can't edit anything there.
EDIT: that link had what I needed. thanks!

Problem fixed by copying my cookies, history, and passwords, and deleting all my firefox data. fixed the glitch, and I didn't lose anything.
