Title: Minecraft
Post by: Canama on May 13, 2011, 08:56:39 pm
Minecraft is basically what you get if you took Lego bricks and made them into an entire world. In the single player game, there is nothing but you and a world of endless blocks one cubic meter in volume. (When I say endless, I mean ENDLESS - there is no hard limit to world size but the game starts glitching when you travel a certain distance from spawn. This distance is about a quarter of the way from the earth to the sun.) You can dig out blocks, craft items, and basically do whatever you please to make the world you're given yours.

The multiplayer is similar but with more people. You can easily set up and host a server. There are many mods avaliable for both single player and multiplayer to customize the experience.

It may be the single greatest thing intended for entertainment that man has ever made.

Discuss.

Official site - the game can only be purchased here. (http://www.minecraft.net/)
Official wiki (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki)

EDIT: As of 8/16/11, Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been released for the Xperia Play! It plays much like the old Minecraft Classic did, but with more blocks.

EDIT 2: As of 10/7/11, Minecraft: Pocket Edition is now available on all Android devices!

EDIT 3: As of I-don't-remember-when, it is available on iOS devices!

Okay, thought I had responded yesterday, but apparently not.

I haven't tried Minecraft yet, as my computer isn't exactly working that great, but I've heard it's a very good game, and can build some good stuff. =D

I play Minecraft sometimes myself.

It's a great game though it's only in beta so be aware of bugs.

I've heard and seen the far lands, though I have never been there myself. Too far and I only use performance boosting mods. (e.g. Optimine, Optifog, as without them I can only play on Tiny and Short and I like to see what's in the distance.)

I have been thinking about getting Minecraft for a while now.
I have heard a good few things about it from people on Roblox (most of the people who played Roblox in 2006-2008 play Minecraft now) so I might try it, but IDK.

I've never played Minecraft. I've always wanted to make my own world and do what ever I want with it. Also, this Minecraft video is AMAZING

You can basicly create your own world on Roblox, and, if you are good at Lua Scripting, you can make it do all kinds of stuff.
From what I've seen Minecraft is kinda like that but it doesn't allow personal places rahter either Single Player or Multiplayer and it is more Survival based... but I am still waiting for my Roblox sub to run out to play Minecraft just in case I play it too much and the money I payed on Roblox is wasted :P

Single Player = personal place with almost endless exploring.

Multiplayer servers: join one, find a remote piece of land, build a house to become your house with also with almost endless exploring but has people. Sometimes griefers.

But in both... BEWARE OF CREEPERS. Unless you play on peaceful.

There's also the Nether in Single Player and soon in Multiplayer.

*snip*

Even more amazing when you recognize the scenes built.  Those are all sets from Hayao Miyazaki's films, done in PAINSTAKING detail.  Just from what I recognize off the top of my head: Castle in the Sky, a movie I don't recognize, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away (my favorite out of all his films), followed by the same movie I don't recognize.  It truly is amazing; if I ever get a chance to play Minecraft, I definitely want to check it out further.

Here's another awesome video I found; most of this guy's stuff is pretty impressive, but this takes the cake.

I finally got the game a few days ago, I love it :D
I have already made a smallish settlement, but I keep getting afraid to expand whenever I heard the dungeon sound in my basement.

...Dungeon Sound?

I'm fairly sure what you're hearing are called 'Cave Sounds'. Also, if you are afraid of getting surprised by too many hostile mobs in caves, go in them at night. Apparently less hostile mobs spawn in caves at night because unlike daytime, they are also spawning on the surface. Beware of Lightning. Start a tree farm. If you are still on stone tools try and find Iron and upgrade to iron tools. Kill as many pigs as you can, setting fire to the block underneath them is an advisable way. Branch mine if you're not into caves. Make sure you can see around your house through glass. The roof counts too. You do not want to get damaged or killed by a surprise explosion. Try and avoid combat with skeletons until you have a bow and a decent supply of arrows, and if you can try and trick hostile mobs into killing themselves or each-other. (such as getting one to walk into lava or getting something like a spider to attack a zombie)

(IDEA: MLNO Minecraft server except it'll never happen)

Well, another LEGO forum, the Brick Comic Network, managed to set one up; if they can do it I'm sure we can...

Well, what does it take? If we find out that info, we could figure something out. =)

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Canama on June 27, 2011, 06:28:35 pm
To start up a basic server just takes a few minutes. If you want to add some modifications it will take know-how, though, and to host 24/7 you need money.

I can mod a server, but I can't host it.

-Canama

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on June 27, 2011, 06:53:29 pm
Hmm... Then likely the only problem would be the 'hosting 24/7' part...

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: korchi12 on June 28, 2011, 12:09:42 am
Well it doesn't have to be 24/7. a server I play on is open for 12 hours (sometimes less) and was shut off during the night.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on June 28, 2011, 08:54:51 am
Yeah... But then the problem is time zones; would the players be able to be on when the server's on, and such. =/

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: korchi12 on June 28, 2011, 04:50:47 pm
Yeah, stupid time zones :( Im on eastern standard time. I could still see it working it would just be a little awkward and people just wouldn't be able to play for many hours at a time if there was, say, a 3-4 hour time difference.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on June 28, 2011, 05:01:11 pm
And what about stuff like 12 hour or so differences? That's the other thing I was thinking of, since we have many different time zones represented here.

Title: Re: Minecraft

No, Minecraft is totally different from Roblox. Not related at all. =P

Look at the beginning of the video in reply #4 here in this topic, the one that pewku provided, do you not see the back of the Roblox figure and then him riding the start of the cities?

Perhaps they are related, I'm not sure..

Title: Re: Minecraft

*facepalm*

Markus Persson, aka, Notch, is the creator of Minecraft and it is not related to any other game.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Canama on June 29, 2011, 07:28:48 pm
It was inspired by a game called "Infiniminer," actually. But it is a very different game.

But to answer your question, it is compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7, Mac OS X, and Linux. A mobile version for Xperia Play, Android, and iOS devices and a console version for the Xbox 360 will be released on an unspecified date.

It costs about $20 USD and can ONLY be purchased from Minecraft.net (http://www.minecraft.net/).

EDIT: Also, thought I should mention: The game is currently in Beta. The price will go up when the full version is released. However, anyone who purchases during Beta will get the final version for free. (Beta is 25% less than the gold release will be). There will be expansions that cost money released after the full version comes out. Anyone who purchased during Alpha (50% off final price) will get these expansions free of charge. Unfortunately, it's now too late for that.

Updates are released very often (There's actually one scheduled for tomorrow, which will add pistons and shears to the game, as well as bug fixes), and the update after that will contain a lot of new features, such as a revamped combat system, improved lighting system, NPC villages, and some other mysterious features.

EDIT 2: This is what a good-sized server can look like. (http://solid-star.com/minecraft/)

If that seems huge, take in the fact that the map is over a month old. (The server started in January.) The server has grown a lot since then. (For those curious, it is the unofficial server of another forum I go on. It's pretty accommodating to outsiders, though. If you post your username here I can get you added to the whitelist. Just be warned that there are a good set of rules to obey.)

As for our server, what Bukkit plugins (http://bukkit.org) should we use?

As far as I am concerned, the must-haves are MC Essentials, Permissions, Big Brother, and WorldEdit (For the WorldGuard functionality).

Other servers I've played on have had mods like MyWarp (Good for creative servers), iConomy (For economy servers), Towny (For town-based servers), amongst others.

Well, I don't know a lot about Minecraft Multiplayer. (I've never played on Multiplayer, TBH. Griefers & Lag, you see. Also, I have a mod, which I have been told would prevent me from going on Multiplayer. It's a performance boosting mod. (optifog + optimine.))

And all this Multiplayer business seems kinda complicated.

I haven't played Multi-player yet, I am slowly bringing myself into the game through singleplayer.
I have already made a new costume for my character, and mastered the art of making watch towers (one of my watch towers has a killer moat >:D), but I have yet to actually mine.
The seasons don't fear the creeper, but I sure do. [/song reference]

There is a buy-one-get-one-free deal this weekend! If you buy a copy of Minecraft for yourself, you get a gift code for a free copy to give to someone else.

Ooh, that sounds pretty interesting. =O How would that work though? Like, would it register it as bought? Can you transfer the program to another computer if it eventually ends up being fail on yours? =P(Meaning the free copy, though also in general)

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Canama on August 13, 2011, 10:40:15 am
When you buy the game, you get infinite licenses. You can download and install it on as many computers as you want.

Same deal with the free copy. You are giving them infinite licenses too at no additional charge.

How many people still do the 'three licenses' thing, now-a-days? Just curious, even if it's slightly off-topic.

There is absolutely nothing overtly inappropriate in single-player - no blood or anything like that - but being ambushed from behind by enemies, especially Creepers (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Creeper), which explode and can destroy your creations, can be scary, especially when it happens deep underground (When the lighting in the game gets dark, it gets BLACK, and darkness is where monsters spawn.) There is a "Peaceful" difficulty option that removes all enemies and grants regenerating health, but that removes all of the challenge from the game.

On multiplayer, it varies from server to server, as with most games with user-driven content. Some are moderated and have good communities, whereas some have chats filled with inappropriate language and statues dedicated to certain unmentionable portions of the male anatomy.

If/when the server I make gets off the ground, I will make sure it stays PG, but obviously I can give no guarantees for others.

In other Minecraft news:

Minecraft: Pocket Edition was released for the Xperia Play! It costs $6.92 and will remain exclusive to it for some unspecified time, then released to all other Android devices and then the iOS. Since I don't own an Xperia Play, I don't know what it's like, but I've heard it's like an expanded Minecraft Classic.

@ MSRR: Watch some Let's Plays of Minecraft on YT--that's how I found out about Minecraft.  There's a really good series from CaptainSparklez, the guy who made the video I posted on the previous page.  (He's pretty clean as far as language goes, though occasionally a mild expletive will slip out.)  See especially his playthroughs of "The Labyrinth of Doom" and this one:

This sounds pretty cool. Do these apply to Classic, or is that standalone to the new versions?

Also, is this similar to LoZ by any chance? I've had a vibe from that for a while now for different things, but the whole 'health bar' and 'Half Heart' caught my attention. =P

Only to Beta. Classic has not been updated since 2009 and will never be updated again.

It's not really similar to Zelda at all, no, other than the health bar.

The primary weapon is whatever you want the primary weapon to be. If you want it to be a sword, go ahead. If you want it to be a bow, go ahead. If you want to punch things with a block of wool, go ahead.

There are no arm cannons or grenades in the game, though I'm sure you can find a mod that adds them.

The only things that are *meant* to be weapons in the game are swords and bows, but you can use whatever you want.

Vines.

I LOVE VINES. I love the fact that they grow. I love the fact that they have different colours in different biomes.

I also love Iron Bars and Glass Panes. Now I have more options for 'transparentish blocks' than just glass or nothing.

I also love Stone Bricks, and the variations of them. Which means I also love strongholds.

I'm still in Creative though. Mainly to see the new features. Like Endermen, it's fun to mess around with them when you're immune to them.  I love the new lighting system. Can't wait until 1.9.

Maybe I should go through that Nether Portal I set up in my Survival World so it has some 1.8 stuff in it...

It's an economy server with a lot of Bukkit plugins, which add things like magic spells, chess, cities, and a lot more.

Minecraft log, _Flipz_ Day 2:
From my base at the bottom of a ravine, I mined down, looking for redstone.  I indeed found it, but I also discovered Lapis, iron, and...an abandoned mineshaft.  While looting the chest I found (literally, the first part of the mineshaft I found), I was ambushed by zombies...coming from a spawner.  that's right, I found a Dungeon AND a mineshaft.  AND I managed to kill my first Enderman.  With a stone sword.  Oh yeah. 'Cause I'm awe-some!!!  8) 8) 8)

Three tips:
Turn off "fancy graphics" (the transparency really causes slowdown)
Turn the render distance to "short" (tiny is downright unplayable)
Stay away from water.  For some reason, it causes lag like nothing else.

EDIT: and if you find something that's both good and cheap, link me to it, please; this thing really deserves to be put out of its misery.

Also, to access the IRC for the economy server, go to http://webchat.quakenet.org/ and put Strallo as the chat room name. You can use that site to see if the server is on and you can chat with people on the server.

Yes.  ANYTHING getting in the water seems to cause massive lag.  Including passive mobs.  Including squid. >_<  If the water is, like, only a couple of blocks deep, you'll be fine, there just seems to be a problem with deeper water eating up processor cycles, at least for me.

Were you moving at night?  It sounds like you ran above a Dungeon with a Skeleton Spawner, but the dungeon had no legal place to put the mobs except aboveground.  Never move above the overworld unless it's daytime, or you've lit up the surrounding area (and the area surrounding THAT) with torches/glowstone/burning netherrack.  Monsters can only spawn in light level 7 or less, and skeletons, zombies, and Endermen burn in sunlight, so... ;)

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Flipz on November 15, 2011, 12:01:25 pm
It's simple, build a u-shape a block above the ground (or the moat/river; if you want to collect the drops, you'll need to have water flowing underneath the lava blade toward your base, just be sure it's only one block deep so mobs can't swim under the blade).  Put a block under one of the sides, put a sign on it, and put lava on top of the sign.  Hey presto, you've got a lava blade!

From above (your base is downward):       (# is stone, L is lava, S is sign, W is water)

Top:
#S#
#L#
###

Level 2:
#W#
#S#
###

Level 3:

###
#W#
#W#

From the side (base is <----)

#LS
#SW
WW#

I've never tried mods, because of this article:
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/META-INF

"This directory is notable because it must be deleted to use mods. The META-INF folder contains a digital certificate (MOJANG_C.SF and MOJANG_C.DSA) that contains a checksum of all the Java files. The certificate is issued to prove the code is safe, and is what lets the web applet version of Minecraft run without Java safety dialogs. When the files are modified, they could have been tampered with, and the certificate is invalid (the checksum changes). If a .jar file contains an invalid certificate, it won't run. Removing META_INF removes the certificate, so it will run again, but if you try to use the browser version of Minecraft, you might get warning dialogs. The MANIFEST.MF file is unrelated, and simply contains information about the archive."

cool, good to know.

my only mod is toomanyitems. i have 3 worlds - a toomanyitems survival, a creative, and a survival where i refuse to use toomanyitems, which is where i play 90% of the time. I started this world with a seed to spawn me right next to a tiny NPC village. Spawning where there are torches, shelter, and some items already available made me actually survive the early stages, and i'm in the progress of making an epic castle.

Dude, you guys HAVE to check out Knoxes' server Nexus Creed!  I was digging a wide stone staircase for the Hall of Knowledge (I'm helping him beautify spawn), and I ran across a ravine.  So, I decided, we should use it as the main area of the library (you know, soaring shelves of bookcases).  So, we're digging out a few things, and I run across ANOTHER ravine (albeit not a very tall one, it was more like a tall cave).  So, I think to myself, OK, we can use this as a tutorial area in caving once we clean it up and attach it to the rest of the tutorials.  So, I'm placing torches to light it up (no sense in drawing mobs nearby) when what do I find just below?  That's right--ANOTHER ravine.  This one's flooded with lava, so naturally I decide we're going to build a mine cart shaft and coaster to take maximum advantage of the area.

This place is going to be EPIC once we're done with it!  ;)

I've made a house in the cross-section of two ravines before, it was awesome, especially since to get into the cave you had to go underwater (I built a lighthouse for the Water Entrance to make it easier to get into.

OK, MTM, I finally managed to download and play your world.

Um, how do I say this?  ...You are WAY undersupplied.  Your torch lighting is FAR too dim, and you have no lighting or protection in the fields surrounding your house.  Add to that the fact that your access routes are all messed up...basically, you're asking to die. :P

Really, at this stage of the game, you shouldn't even be building aboveground.  You should have a little hidey-hole dug in the side of a cliff (preferably next to a large coal deposit), and you should mine for TONS of coal and iron.  Once you have a full set of iron armor and several stacks of coal, THEN come aboveground.  Granted, the village there is highly helpful, but really, without access to the underground minerals and without protection...you're doomed. :P

If you really want to keep going, ditch all your stuff in a chest and go find a desert.  Get some cactus and some sand, and build a cactus wall around your village.  (A simple cactus farm can be made by digging two rivers 1 block apart, placing sand between them on alternate blocks, planting a cactus on each sand block, and placing blocks adjacent to the (empty) block above each cactus.  Since cacti can't be placed next to other blocks, the cactus segments that grow will immediately pop off, hopefully into the water, where they will be carried down to a single collection point.)  Since cacti can't be placed directly next to other blocks, you'll have to stagger the wall as you place it.  Be sure you have the sand flush with the soil on the outside, but dig a trench on the inside, so the villagers don't kill themselves on your wall by accident.  Also don't forget to build a door or two in the wall so you can get out later!  By building a cactus wall and properly lighting the inside area, you'll be (mostly) unharmed by hostile mobs while you build, and after a night of mobs killing themselves against your cactus wall you can come out in the daytime to pick up the drops--just watch out for morning creepers!

EDIT: Also, build yourself a compass and a watch ASAP; once you've built one of each--EVER--you'll be able to pause the game and go to the statistics screen to use them--even if you don't have one in your inventory!  (Go to Statistics->Items and scroll down.  The item icon is just as functional as when it appears in the inventory--just remember that the compass points to your original spawn, NOT necessarily North.)

EDIT 2: Cactus wall diagram (C is cactus, s is sand (or dirt, just remember that cacti can only be placed on sand)):

Updated to Minecraft 1.0 and made an all new world to try out the new features. I found an abandoned mineshaft behind-under-ish my house in the first 15 minutes (if that a remarkable feat...) and found 2 diamonds. Life's good ;D

Title: Re: Minecraft

That vein I just showed you actually had 5 diamonds in it! Enough for a diamond pick AND an enchantment table! :cheer:

So, I now have a problem.  My first portal to the Nether I built too high up; I popped out on a tiny netherrack island many, many blocks above a HUGE lava ocean.  I built another one at bedrock level, but it warped me to the same location; so, I ditched my items (except for a single stone pick) and broke the upper portal from the Nether-side, then jumped into the lava.  I then re-entered the Nether using my lower portal.  At first everything seemed great--until I discovered that I am now BELOW that huge lava sea.  grrrrrr....

So, now I have to figure out how I'm going to build a tunnel out of the lava.  I'd LIKE to brew a potion of fire resistance and use standard "underwater" building techniques, but guess where I have to go to be able to make a Brewing Stand?  :sigh:  So, any help?  (Remember, water does NOT work in the Nether.)

AFAIK, yes you can install on multiple computers and it'll still work. Though, you would be sharing an account, so you wouldn't be able to do multiplayer together without buying another account.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Flipz on December 02, 2011, 12:49:27 am
store it up, you'll need LOTS if you want to build minecart stations and/or grinders/traps of any kind.

Really, though, if you dig around at diamond level (7-14 blocks on the Y coordinate, that is, 7-14 blocks from the bottom of the bedrock), you'll find tons of the stuff.  Still, if you can get an enchantment table, stop collecting Redstone for a bit until you get a Fortune pick, so it'll double your drops from Redstone blocks.  (And glowstone, and lapis lazuli, and coal as well, but the effect is most apparent on redstone. ;)

I FINALLY managed to get a Blaze Rod in the Nether (I'll have to come back with about a COMPLETELY full inventory of Cobblestone if I want to seal up that Blaze spawner so I can safely explore the netherhold for Nether Wart), and made my first brewing stand!  Splash weakness potions are AWESOME!  (I have a semi-functional spider grinder set up, so I have tons of spider eyes for weakness potions.)

And hey, I have a working EXP grinder!  There's like five different dungeons near my spawn base, so I chose the nearest zombie spawner and set up a mob elevator like on Coe's Quest.  I even added an extra feature: a ground-level "stop" for the zombies in case I want to grind topside (for whatever reason).  Now I'll move my enchantment table over to the grinder and REALLY start enchanting stuff!

Actually, I'll get hungry a lot while doing this...perhaps it's time for me to start an automated wheat farm?

Man, I just enchanted the most AWESOME sword! Sharpness II, Knockback II, AND Fire Aspect II!  And for only 20 levels, too! Win!  ;D

EDIT: And for 19 I got Efficiency II, Unbreaking II, and Fortune I!  And that Fortune I?  Gave me over a stack and three quarters glowstone dust from just TWO formations (and relatively small ones at that)!

My grinder is consistently gaining me 10 or so levels every 30 seconds, provided I wait a few minutes to start.  Yeah-uh!

Do Weakness potions work on Blaze?  Because if not, it's gonna be a while before I can brew anything else; I don't have access to Nether Wart until I can close off my Blaze spawner.  (I don't want to destroy it for obvious reasons, but I can't take a step outside my protected hallway without getting jumped by Blaze.  Then the ghasts show up...)  I'll have to enchant some fire protection armor if not, which means a few more iron swords' worth of zombies...

All potions have normal effects on Blazes.

Also, yesterday Notch announced that he is stepping down as lead developer of Minecraft and passing the position on to Jeb! He is going to take a brief break and then work on another Mojang product. You definitely will want to use the mouse.  The control scheme kind of relies on it for precision building and aiming arrows. :P

If you just want to build, you might consider building a world in Creative mode.  In Creative mode, you can't take damage, you don't get hungry, you can fly, and you have infinite building supplies.  It's great for exploring Minecraft and learning the controls when you're still getting used to things.

Also, if you make sure to use the same "seed" for each world, you can make a pair of identical Creative and Survival worlds, allowing you to explore the world in Creative and then play it in Survival once you have a general idea of where you are and what you want to do with the world.

I bought  2Mak07 a new comp for his birthday . Well, almost new.
HP 2000-299WM notebook T3500 2.10 GHz Processor, upgraded to 4 Gigs of DDR 3.
Intel integrated graphics.
Running windows 7 with Avast antivirus.
Using Firefox ( tho I also tried internet exploder..)
When I downloaded Minecraft I had 2 issues.
1. Could not connect to serve r(from minecraft.com)
2. Picked play online.. black screen.

Went to app data/ roaming/ deleted minecraft files..
same thing..

Each time the result is the same.. if online, gets to about 90% and stops, tho it says it is done downloading.. if download opens to black screen.
What I have tried:
Deleted files as per above.. no good.
udpdated drivers.. no good
deleted and reinstalled Java.. no good
deleted files each time there was a fail.
Got one java error, fixed that and resumed all above steps with same results.
Java says we have latest Java
Intel says we have latest drivers.
Classic runs ok.. =(

Does anyone know how to fix this demon??
Thanks in advance.

Any tips for beating the Ender Dragon? I even used a mod to give myself all the Diamond weapons and armour, but I still lost in less than five seconds.

the towers regenerate it. hit them (one hit will do it) and they blow up. hit them all and he won't be able to regenerate.

fill your inventory with potions of instant healing and arrows. arrows are your best weapon, unless he gets close enough to hit with a sword, which you want to avoid.

dig a shelter (with roof!) into the end stone. the dragon can't blow that up, it'll protect you pretty well.

use ladders to climb up the towers. have a pool of water beneath them you cn jump into - if you land in a water source brick you won't take fall damage.

water buckets are very useful against endermen

wearing a pumpkin on your head will stop endermen from charging from you unless you hit them.

if i think of anything else i'll let you know.

Could this be an openGL issue, and if so how do I find out if it is and fix??

FIXED..

THIS WORKED!!
You might also try changing the path of minecraft just to see if it has any effect. Make a folder in the C: folder titled Minecraft. In that new folder, place the Minecraft.exe you download from minecraft.net/download, as well as a folder titled One, (or whatever you want but you would need to change code to match). After this, go back to windows, rightclick and create new text document.
In notepad, type
Code:

set APPDATA=C:\Minecraft\One
C:\Minecraft\Minecraft.exe

Then save that file as RunMinecraft.bat

Then when you double click that file, It will open up minecraft and save all minecraft files to the different directory (in this case c:\minecraft\one\.minecraft)

Yeah, if you know what you are doing .bat files are really useful. To run a certain server mod you have to use them so I got a quick and dirty lesson in them from my brother.

I would like to recommend an excellent minecraft community and server..

It was first recommended to me by a friend from LU, who was a dev for LEGO. They are pretty much against any griefing, bad language, etc. and the community as a whole is very helpful.
All I ask is that you READ and FOLLOW the rules there.

Have a happy day!

In other bews...Minecraft 1.2 is Out!

by Jens Bergensten on March 1, 2012

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRZQiCCIqiE

Minecraft version 1.2 (actually 1.2.1) is now officially released! Get it by updating the game in the Minecraft launcher. Features include:

    New jungle biome
    Added ocelots
    Added cats
    Added iron golems
    New AI for mobs
    Tame wolves can have puppies
Villagers will have children if there is room in their village
New map height limit (256 instead of 128)
    New items and blocks
Doors have been updated so that double-doors work better with redstone
    Added rare drops for mobs
Many other minor tweaks and fixes

In addition, the Minecraft launcher has been updated. The new launcher should properly select 64 bit Java installations for Mac OS X users. If you haven’t downloaded Minecraft yet you can grab it here: www.minecraft.net/download

Update: Uploaded Minecraft 1.2.2 because birches and pine trees were missing…

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Flipz on March 02, 2012, 03:05:58 pm
I may actually go back to my Beta world now, if I don't have to worry about the villagers anymore I can get back to repairing the village and making it liveable.  (Before I had to run away from the village at night, so I wouldn't lose anyone to creepers.)  And I have enough iron for quite a few iron golems...hmm...

FYI, to anyone who wants to build iron golems from scratch: it takes 36 iron ingots (crafted into 4 iron blocks) and a pumpkin.

O_O oh wow, I just realized: if pumpkins are added to any Vechs maps, life will be an instant cinch.  He always puts huge deposits of iron in one spot. ;D

EDIT: 1.2.3 is out.  DEFINITELY update it; otherwise skellies and zombies won't burn in sunlight. O_O

YES.

Does Gmail support voice chat?  If you need voice, I'd be happy to commentate, but I'd be just as happy commenting via text.

Do you plan to do a survival Let's Play or adventure maps?

I am currently using a crossbow mod, because it doesn't change the gameplay too much, isn't incredibly overpowered, and I think we need more than bow for ranged weapons.

I have used tale of kingdoms, which is a very fun mod which takes a whole new perspective on minecraft. I would recommend it if you get bored of basic minecraft and want to try something new.

Hey ya’ll. Haven’t really got any Lego Universe related news for ya’ll, but I do have something cool that some friends and I have been working on for a while now.

Well as the title of the post says, we have been working on rebuilding Nexus Tower in Minecraft. It is not to scale, it is probably 1:4 scale, which after you see it in minecraft, you get a picture of actually how big it was in-game.

Be warned, there's a chance that the world may not load at all. It's a very buggy snapshot. So far, I find worlds with less blocks to render less in danger of this bug. (e.g. superflat worlds, having very few blocks to render except the first five or so levels)

Actually, no, they're not being integrated into each other. Rather, single player is just being made much more like multiplayer, in that your computer becomes a local server for the singleplayer worlds. Multiplayer is similar to that, but involves other people being able to connect to you. They're being made similar to each other, not being made the same thing.

I was under the impression that the only difference between a single player world and a multiplayer one was whether or not you were playing in Multiplayer mode; that is, a simple bit that indicates whether or not you're letting other people play with you.  You know, like how the xbox live version does it.

So, is there a way to let others connect to this "server"?  Or will we still have to go to all the trouble of setting up dedicated Minecraft servers if we want to play multiplayer?

afaik there'll be a way to "invite a friend" or something like that, but don't quote me on that.

Hu-MONGOUS Minecraft pre-release!  Mining now yields experience orbs! :cheer:

Oh, and Adventure Mode has finally been added.  Hooray!

Enchantment in general has been TOTALLY re-vamped, the highest level of enchantments is now Level 30, and Level 30 grants MUCH better enchantments than it used to.

Here is a link to a website with calculation tools for the new system: http://pernsteiner.org/minecraft/enchant_snapshot/

I might actually install this one now--when they made the switch that eliminated pausing in singleplayer, I just couldn't play--it was impossible for me to survive even one night, I needed the chance to pause at times to plan my next move.  Now that pausing has been re-implemented, and much of the bugginess has been fixed, however, I think I'll take this one for a spin.

It is not for your common Minecraft server that isn't LAN based. It even specifically says it:

You should probably abandon the BZP server.

The friends of the owner, and the owner himself, are quite unpleasant. And even when they cause server crashing stuff, they always get off lightly. It's not that pleasant of a server without the BZPers.

Neither of you have ever tried building a house out of pistons before, have you? :P  Practice with those, and I guarantee log-building will come more easily. :P

In other news, I'm thinking about building a small CTM-style survival map.  Since MCEdit is still a rather unstable release, is there another external program I could use to mapbuild?  I don't want to use VoxelSniper, since it's an in-game editor; I need something that can do "illegal" things like placing still water/lava in the air, making a column of ladders for Vechs' bridging bombs, etc.

Title: Re: Minecraft

I've done some piston building before. It sucked :P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Trijhak on July 30, 2012, 03:40:50 pm
I have, and it was easier than placing logs, for one. This is because pistons did not exist except via mods before they were added and logs existed before they could be placed on their sides.

Changes to blocks I have been used to placing do not go down well with me.

I've also managed to make a self-building house once.

Title: Re: Minecraft

I've also managed to make a self-building house once.

Ooh, I wonder what logs do when pushed by pistons now?  If the coders were smart, they'd just recycle the piston-pushing code, but if they weren't, things might be all wonky. ::)

MTM: I'll try, but I'm not sure what exactly will fit into it. Bt I do want to try and look into that at least. Though, given it's fail battery, in the long run, if I intend to use this for powerful stuff, it might be an idea to just get a new laptop period(After a while, though. I have no budget for a new laptop when I only just got two new computers, my desktop and this. =P). *Looks at PK's blog on BZP* ... And preferably one that doesn't get to the temperature of the sun when playing games. =P

Canama: I just got it(Obviously it's not new, of course, but still). =P I works for browsing, but not very much so for gaming, due to fail specs. Despite that, it still manages to run Blender and run it fast, and that's all I'd really care about. =P Save my PC for gaming, despite the fact that it's not as powerful as I had initially guesstimated. Still much better than my old PC, which my new laptop is on par with. =P

DON'T UPGRADE THE RAM

I was planning to upgrade my RAM, so one night I simply removed my RAM sticks, took picures and put them back, and now I'm spending two weeks without a computer, waiting for HP to replace the motherboard. >__>

I have the new RAM, but I'm terrified to install it once I get the computer back. xD I'm also a bit worried about putting my graphics card back in...

But anyway :P Once I get the comp back, I'm going to get a Tekkit server running. Anyone here interested?

I wouldn't do it on my own. Despite having changed my own RAM once, I'm still cautious myself, so I'd just wait until I had someone to confirm I'm not doing it wrong. =P

Sounds cool; if I ever get actual Minecraft(Because Classic's inevitable, whether it be my laptop or my computer. =P), then I'd probably like to play on it. =)

I'm assuming tweaking settings on the options wouldn't help, then? =P It'd likely definitely be my computer, because that at least has 2 Gig of RAM(I'm curious if it can handle more, I don't think it's maxed out, so there's hope for it still. =P). Because unless this thing can handle 4 Gig of RAM, a 3x upgrade, there's little hope of it running Minecraft without any lag at all. =P Now, Classic, what I'm looking into, might be possible, since it's the older version and all. I don't have very much hope, but that still remains and otherwise, there's at least a use for my Desktop now. =P

Heh, Vista's so bad it's not even considered. =P

I don't know yet. I myself would rather just upgrade the graphics card, to be honest. Might be cheaper in the short term, but it'd be easier in the long term(For everything except a couple things, like Paint. They ruined Paint in 7.) to just upgrade the graphics card. Would make sure that I can run things, and if I knew it could handle high density models, then that would help me get the courage to experiment a lot with Blender. =P

Well, I'll see what happens; it likely won't happen soon, but not too far away either. I need to find out what works with my motherboard, too, and if it can even be upgraded.

In the mean time, if I really wanted to at times, I could likely play Minecraft on another computer here, but I'd like that to be a last resort if possible, it's definitely not mine. =P Wouldn't be full Minecraft still, but I hope to remedy that problem, I want to play on more than Peaceful Creative...

About how many blocks could you see in front of you¿

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 03:49:02 pm
Hmm.... Well, it definitely wasn't tiny, so more than 10 blocks. It may have been short; since I knew enough not to go for even normal on my laptop, I believe. It was late at night, though...

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 04:23:42 pm
fair enough.

have you tried optifine? its supposed to really boost your FPS....

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 04:29:33 pm
No; it's not really possible with Minecraft Classic, given it just putting you in the middle of a world... I don't have the full version yet, as much as I want it.(Especially after watching the first 22 episodes of CoeStar's let's play: Coe's Quest.) Will try that as soon as I can, however; despite the fact that I have no clue about mods for Minecraft. =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 04:33:32 pm
mods are (usually) pretty easy to install. just open up the minecraft.jar and dump the files in.

yes, you are right, there are pretty much no mods for classic

short render distance + optifine would probably make for a playable minecraft 1.3 for you though.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 04:36:01 pm
1. Hmm; I'll try that on my laptop if I ever get it, then.

2. But there are mods? How do those work, then? Because it downloads the packages?

3. And non-Fancy graphics. That's only good for the awesome gaming computers. =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 04:37:25 pm
I've seen fancy graphics take "supercomputers" to their knees.....

and yes, there are mods. LOTS of mods. seriously, if you can think of a way to alter minecraft, there's a mod for it.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 04:47:05 pm
I didn't say Super Computers, I said dedicated gaming computers, though point taken. =P

No, I meant for Classic. =P I know of many mods... NEI, TMI, Tekkit, that Technic I keep hearing about on BZP...

Title: Re: Minecraft

no, i don't believe classic has any mods (or is moddable at all)

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 04:53:57 pm
Fair enough; I figured as much. =) Still awesome, especially if I really can do those hop jump block placements like I see in videos. That could be cool. =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 05:42:11 pm
yes, you can do that =P just takes a few minutes of practice.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 05:46:41 pm
That'd be cool then. I'll have to try when I'm back on my laptop later. =)

Also, I broke the one rule of Minecraft last night: Never dig straight down. ... Surprisingly, I didn't fall straight into lava. =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 05:54:17 pm
well, dangerous pitfalls when mining are a lot less common in classic. =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 05:55:58 pm
Yep. Except when you consider that it was one spot that didn't have lava, that I happened to drop onto. I was very lucky there. =P(I just dug straight down, wondering what it'd be like. And then the lava showed up...)

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 06:01:50 pm
ah. well at least you can fly out, right?

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 06:06:42 pm
I couldn't fly(Or at least figure out how to), but I did get out, yes; I just dug my way out.

Did you know you can destroy lava? =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 03, 2012, 06:13:38 pm
just fill in the lava with blocks, or use water.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 03, 2012, 06:18:36 pm
Well, in Classic, you can also just destroy adjoining blocks. I don't know how it works, but it worked for me. I have a feeling it was underwater, though, so that might have something to do with it...

Title: Re: Minecraft

yes i think it might =P

Title: Re: Minecraft

Title: Re: Minecraft

No... Besides, if I were to run something else, it'd likely fry the laptop, unfortunately. =P I'd definitely go that route, though, if I could. Would be awesome. =D Would make a LP of Minecraft Classic(However short it'd be. =P) much easier, too. =P

There is a hacked client (http://www.worldofminecraft.com/Downloads) made by World of Minecraft, which enables things like flying and fast running.

I installed it because I went on a server that allowed it back when I played Classic.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 05, 2012, 09:30:47 am
So, been playing the Minecraft demo! It's rather awesome, I must say, and runs pretty well, considering it's well under 'minimum' specs. =P

... I have a newfound hatred of Creepers, though. I died three times to it in the world I just played.

First time, it was right outside my door, after I killed a spider(That was lucky, I ran into a Skeleton into what I thought was a cave, but rather simply a connection to the surface, which I opened by accident. >>' Then as I was fleeing, I ran into a Spider and nearly died, and barely got back to my base in time to close the doors, which I had just opened when Mr. Spider appeared. I had a hatred of those before this, though. =P), opened the door, hit once, BOOM, there goes part of my base's walls, and me with it.

Respawn, search frantically for my base, which was hard to find the first time. Get killed by another Creeper trying to stalk me. That was my fault for trying to fight it Fisticuffs style, though. =P

Respawn again, search and finally find my base, admiring the destruction, and gathering my items back up. Fix up my base, and go to search what was actually a tunnel. Another Creeper. Yeah, I should have run there, but I wanted revenge. Boom.

I just gave up after trying to find my house again when I respawned, though. The mountain's gotta be a mile away from my spawn point. -_-;

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 05, 2012, 03:12:11 pm
Make a bed blade. Sleep in it and it resets your spawnpoint ;)

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 05, 2012, 04:00:56 pm
Yeah, I've been considering it now that I've found out about beds... The only thing is that it'd use up 10 minutes or so of my playtime, since I only have 5 days/nights worth of time in the demo... And I'm still not entirely certain how to buy the game yet. =/ Looking into it, but it might take a little while.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Trijhak on August 05, 2012, 04:02:55 pm
Sleeping in a bed doesn't take up 10 minutes of time. You don't literally sleep through the night, it fades and then you wake up and it's morning.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 05, 2012, 04:06:58 pm
The demo only lasts for 100 minutes, which correlates to 5 days and nights. Theoretically, it'd act like some things in other games, where skipping through time or events eats up time, though since I can just reset the world, it doesn't matter that much. I'd just need to figure out how to get the wool.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 05, 2012, 08:21:23 pm
Get wool from sheep. Killing sheep gives 0-1, shearing them gets 1-3

If you're desperate, 9 string in a crafting table will make 1 wool.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 05, 2012, 09:42:11 pm
Haha, look at MTM, he thinks I can kill 9+ spiders. =P I got lucky last time to kill the Spider I did, and not die from the Skeleton. xD

Killing sheep worked, though. =P It did take away about 10 minutes from total game time when I slept, but I still managed to make a skylight and get trapped in a Mineshaft thanks to not caring in those last two minutes. =P Time ran out just as I was about to clear away and get a chest, though. D=

The irony? I never died once that time. xD

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 05, 2012, 11:03:55 pm
Nice.

Hey, what version does the demo use?

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 05, 2012, 11:43:17 pm
The latest one. =) Means I have to wait for Optifine, but it sounds like it'll only be a couple more days.

Also, I hate spiders. Always have. but Minecraft's slowly making me hate them less on the 'fear' side, and more on the 'I AM GOING TO KEEEEEEEL YOU' side.

I also got lost again. =) Found a HUUUUUGE cavern that went down rather deep and had lava, though. Was tempted, but I didn't see any safe way down. =P

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: mtmerrick on August 06, 2012, 01:52:40 pm
ravines are always fun.

have you tried just running in a straight line to explore?

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on August 06, 2012, 01:54:53 pm
Yeah. I knew there wasn't any way to stop me from falling to my doom, though, unfortunately. =P Not that it mattered, considering I got lost and tag-team double killed by Spiders shortly after that. Knew I should've put Torches down, but it wasn't night at the time when I went in. -_-;

Not yet. I'll definitely do that when I get Full Minecraft, so I'm not limited by the 5 days/nights I have. =/

How intriguing... That's just like the error Free Players get when they try to run the demo without Minecraft already installed now. The issue might not have been fixed even now, though maybe next update it'll be fixed.

I am addicted to the Trampoline Mod. (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1452979-132trampoline-mod-v30-put-some-spring-in-your-step/)
It's especially fun to use in the Sky Dimension from Beta. (Access it via this mod (http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/portals.22906/))

So, question: Feed the Beast or Tekkit?

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Trijhak on December 01, 2012, 03:11:25 pm
Vanilla.

Both pretty much change the game and therefore should be treated as different games entirely.

Vanilla is superior to non-aesthetic/optimising mods anyway. Vanilla's going to expand, no such guarantee with a bunch of unstable, untrustworthy mods.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: The Truth on December 01, 2012, 03:14:56 pm
I don't use modpacks.

I use the following mods:
Custom NPCs, Moar Achievements Redux, Trampoline Mod, The Twilight Forest, OptiFine, TooManyItems, Spawner GUI, Death Chest, and sometimes the Secret Rooms Mod. And the newest version of Forge. (http://files.minecraftforge.net/)
All are completely stable and updated often.

Well, all I know is in Tekkit you have the ability to create enormous and complicated machinery...

Both pretty much change the game and therefore should be treated as different games entirely.

That's exactly why I'm looking at modpacks.  Ever since 1.3 and on, Minecraft has been feeling less and less like...well, Minecraft, and for some reason bats, witches, and the new sounds mark the spot where Vanilla has jumped the shark for me.  The modpacks give their own unique experience, one that's both cohesive and, importantly, new to me, so I get that same thrill of achievement and the unknown as I used to with Vanilla.

So, question: Feed the Beast or Tekkit?
Well, all I know is in Tekkit you have the ability to create enormous and complicated machinery...

Yes, IndustrialCraft (I think, that or BuildCraft) is included with FTB as well as Tekkit (as are OptiFine and TooManyItems).  (I should mention for the sake of fairness that I've played both Technic and Tekkit, but not FTB.)  From what I've seen SO far, the big difference is that Tekkit comes with RedPower and EquivalentExchange2, whereas FTB has Forestry and the Portal Gun mod.  I've never really used RedPower that much in Tekkit anyway, and EE2 is what sucked the fun out of Technic for me (well, that and the MASSIVE lag issues caused by Thaumcraft, which is a shame because it was actually my favorite part of the pack), so I'm hoping FTB will be more fun for me.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on December 01, 2012, 10:10:42 pm
FTB, if it has a Portal Gun mod. =P Assuming it doesn't lag or anything.

Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Ddude The Insane on December 02, 2012, 01:31:19 am
Personally I like the changes they've been making to vanilla. The sounds aren't perfect, but bats and witches are cool. They've just been making a lot of tweaks.

As for FTB...I spent about 5 hours straight playing it with friends earlier xP It lacks EE2 (which personally was one of my favorite things in Tekkit; it made mass-producing items so simple) and Optifine, but the big difference is that its mods are on the 1.4 client. The improvements brought by 1.4 versions of mods are pretty significant(quite a few new ores/devices in IC2). Plus it has Biomes XL, which is an amazing mod.

It's too early for me to judge, but right now I'd put TTB miles ahead of Tekkit. It's basically Tekkit on steroids xP

Title: Re: Minecraft

If you can't handle the constant changes to vanilla, then Minecraft is not the game for you.
