Title: Public, Private, or Home?
Post by: Ace on May 16, 2008, 11:03:17 pm
How are you receiving your education? I go to a public high school, with all my buds. I have just one excruciating month of school left, then I'll be free to sleep in 'til noon! Lol, probably not that late, but you get the idea. =P

Actually, it's not as bad as you think. Let's see:

1. Ability to sleep 'til Noon
2. Food whenever you feel like it
3. Staying up late because you don't have to get up a 6...

And I don't think anyone likes fights....

No, I think the fights are lame. I don't normally watch 'em when they happen.

Only if I'm winning.

Anyway, back on topic: I'm currently attending university, but back when I was in the school system I was public schooled like the majority of people.

Hyper Spammer: I don't like fights, but hopefully if the situation were ever reversed and I was in Public school, it would be like Ichigo, in that I own everyone else :P And I was in HS since Grade one, and I was actually cursive writing way before anyone else it seemed. It helps when there's only one person learning instead of thirty at times.

Yeah, I use the first and last benefits (I sleep pretty late, but usually not noon), but usually don't feel like eating excepts at breakfast, supper, and snack (Believe me, my "snack" counts as a meal). It's a good thing I'm not in Public School, because I imagine people would be wanting to pick fights with me all the time...

I'm sorry to hear that. =( I enjoy going to public school very much, aside from the occasional bad teacher and bully. One learns to cope with it. ;)

i'm homeschooled... but I used to go to private school. My mom pulled me out when i was in 6th grade because I was too advanced and the principle fired my favorite teacher just because she wouldn't change someone's grade.  :o

And... homeschool is great, mainly because all my friends are homeschooled, and I get to go to the movies when everyone else is in school, and I get to go to the mall, and eat out for lunch!

Besides, I only have... a year and a half left until I'm done with high school, so I'm happy :)

Depends on which High School you are/will be going to. ;)

One awesome thing I can say about my school (Middle School; grade 8) is that by the end of this year I will have gone on 4 field trips, starting now. The cool thing is that 2 of those trips are to a theme park (with rides and whatnot) and one is to the pool! 8)
The last one is to a historic place, which is still cool.  8)
Pop quiz: Winner gets 5 clicks wherever they want.
The 4th field trip is to the turning point in the US civil war. Where is it?

I go to a public school, and in september I'm starting 7th grade. It's actually quite nice, even though there are good and not as good teachers, and a clan of "popular punks" allways try whatever they can to get a reaction from me. ::) But I've got my own clan of friends, too, and we sure have a laugh. :D

As for fights, this isn't any inner-city school, and fighting isn't tolerated. There's even a security guard. But don't worry, It gets rowdy enough on the bus. 8)

A very good Public Secondary School. Have to get up at 8, six lessons a day, tuesdays dedicated to History and Physics.

And I just started GCSEs at the end of the last school year.  (the last school year ended last week, the next starts September 6th.)

Only two more years at this secondary school... after that I have to either move onto a sixth form or a college. (the british use of it)

I am homeschooled and have been my whole life. I support homeschooling to the fullest, and if I have any children they will be homeschooled.

One of the main reasons I support homeschooling is because of the bad influences and distractions at most public schools. School is for learning, but kids are also learn inappropriate language, disrespect, and bad attitudes. I have seen it happen to many of my public schooled cousins. They go into school with a innocent and hopeful character; they come out with a "know-it-all" and "no-one-is-good-enough-to-even-be-in-my-presence" attitude. Of course, sheltering your kids doesn't work either. I know many people have the misconception that all homeschoolers are "unsocialized". Indeed, I know quite a few that are. However, you can't stereotype all of us! If anything, I am more social than my public schooled cousins. What happens at family reunions? They sit in a corner texting while I'm having deep conversations with my elders. And do I have friends my own age? Well, if you add up robotics (approximately 20, and growing), ultimate frisbee (approx. 15), best friends from past events (approx 10), and those here on MLNO. The answer is YES.

Another advantage of homeschooling is that you are allowed to use the curriculum that you want. It is very important to me that my curriculum includes religion. If God created the universe, then I want to hear about it. I am also math and science minded, so I am doing more challenging math and science programs. I am also starting college early because I was able to get ahead in school and even skip a level of math.

I have been satisfied with the way I have been educated. Of course, I wish I found robotics earlier and took programming in 7th grade, but I am happy with the way it turned out. Sure, I have to live with people constantly asking if I am stuck inside a house all day and if I have any friends, but I have learned to live with these insults. I am half way through highschool and have already started a few college classes.

Just to let you know I am not completely against public schooling, but the benefits aren't always worth the costs.

I don't want to offend anybody, I just need to vent about this...

I'm going to middle school next year, and I sure hope it's better than elementary school. I HATED elementary school. I've always wished I was home-schooled, where you can learn at your own level and not deal the extreme masses of people that are mean, disrespectful, and stupid. I'm pretty much against public school, but that's probably since I'm always so bored at school that I've over the years lost respect for people who aren't good at anything except being biased and playing Call of Duty. I'm going to a more gifted-oriented program which I hope is better, I'm SICK of knowing things better than the teachers.

They always accommodate for the least smart people so everybody can feel smart or something like that, which in turn prevents the people who don't want to learn about monarch butterflies again from actually learning. Most words etc. I know from conversations with my parents, books, and video games.

Once more, I'm SICK of not being able to say "trivial" or "neophyte" without turning heads and being called a nerd. It's pathetic how idiotic "average" kids are! And we have our schools to thank.

THANK YOU AVERAGE PUBLIC SCHOOLS!  ::)

I'm sick of all the anti-public school homeschooling people who stereotype us public school people as idiots that know nothing.

Need I remind everyone here one very important detail?
There is no certainty in anything in this universe.
Except one thing, what you believe, and that, is also open to change.

Middle school may be better for some, usually those who require a lot of attention.
Regular school may be better for some as well, because they want to see how much better they are doing than the other student.
There are those who muddle through, go with the flow, rise above, stand out, and yes, those who fail.

The Big answer is, If you you want to learn, you will, no matter where you are.

To those who already know this to be true, please excuse my statement that included the word "everyone"

I got some mixed messages from the last few posts I read, and indeed you are correct, I did not read this topics first post. So without further due and thanks to my mentor, I'll get back on topic.

My parents started me at Nursery School, then Kindergarten, then public, private didn't come until grade nine at Saint Andrews College in Aurora Ontario.
Sadly or not, my so called education is grade 10, though I believe something different, because I'm not only successful in life, but love as well

These days and many days before this one, one would have found me learning things that no classroom or teacher could tell.

Life is about learning, and learning can only be experienced.

1. this is NOT a debate.
2. This topic is NOT about which is better.

I've passed through twelve years of public school and do not feel as if my education is lesser or greater than that of a home- or private-schooled pupil. I had many teachers that I enjoyed, a few who I dreaded going to class to. Public schools certainly aren't perfect by any use of the word. It is, however, hard to throw blame on any one aspect of it in particular. As the son of a man who has worked in many tiers of the system for more than thirty years, I have been able to see inside district offices and talked to the people who work there - if they do their jobs well, you never learn their names; if they do poorly, you hear about them, one way or another.

The administrator's egos often get in the way of doing jobs right. Teachers are often answering more to their union benefits than the children they teach. Students are often mired by poor influences at home, apathy, or are simply different learners that the schools are not keen on teaching well.

For better or for worse, public school prepares you for every echelon of society that you will undoubtedly run in to. It is an imperfect institution that is the only option of schooling for many parents. I graduated with my wits and intelligence intact, enough to be accepted into the college of my choice, and I couldn't be happier.

Hey Ace, nice to see you again, your father I do want to meat. Education comes from experience, the layman knows this.
As for the egos of the teachers, they are who they are, doing what they can for an exploded salary.
As for your last paragraph I must ask, what would you do to make things better?

Legodac,

What I want to change the most in public schools are the class sizes. I've been in a few classrooms with almost forty other students - the teachers had too much on their plate and my peers took advantage of it. I had to use a tutor to get the information that wasn't being relayed well so I could pass one of the classes. The rooms themselves aren't built to handle that many people in the first place. You are literally elbow-to-elbow with the people next to you. Not pleasant in the slightest.
