Title: Drawing
Post by: Blade on March 22, 2013, 04:57:39 pm
Discuss the popular pass-time here. =P

I wasn't entirely certain where else to put this, as it doesn't really fit in the art category and all. =P

I've been practicing drawing in the last couple days, I seem to be getting a little better... But, well, I'm still not that great, I'll admit it. =P

My my, that's quite the .... artistivity you've got! Must have taken a while to complete.

As for myself, can't really recall the last time I "drew". I'm more of a "doodler", drawing memes and such on assignments.

Post by: Blade on March 23, 2013, 11:39:11 am
MsRR, that is just plain awesome. =O

I was gonna say that I've been getting better, but I definitely would still need a lot more work to get to that skill level. ^^'

Compared to what I used to be like, though, I've improved a lot in the last couple days. =P

I can barely doodle a stick figure these days..

What have you been drawing Blade??

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on March 23, 2013, 04:29:13 pm
MSRR: That's impressive!
I've been practicing manga style drawing for the F.G. 2/3 webcomic...I've gotten quite good with faces, and I'm experimenting with drawing people in profile.

Once I bother to set up the scanner, sure. :P

Just random things(Mostly heads and such to test out hairstyles); I can't get pics, however, since you can't save Swapnotes as images. =P Granted, the improvement's been partly because of tips from a good friend, so I can't take much credit. ^^'

Woah, a topic on drawing? Well, here's a piece I made in Visual Art last sem and it's one of my drawings I'm most proud of.

So enjoy the weirdness/creepyness.

Kinda Lovecraftian.

OK, I will get this scanner hooked up tomorrow. I want to upload at least Misu's face.

Awesome work...

Title: Re: Drawing

Very nice drawing; the eye is admittedly odd, but it's very good. I definitely need more practice, it seems.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 29, 2013, 02:28:48 pm
What tools or programs do you use to draw??
I have only used pencils and chalk.
The above is chalk on paper.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on March 29, 2013, 03:59:00 pm
Right now, the only thing I use is stuff on the 3DS, specifically Swapnote(Though I normally don't use that much either).

In the past, I've used pencil(Coloured or otherwise), sometimes pen, and obviously going way back, crayons. =P if I get a graphics tablet, though, that'll be probably the sole source of drawing, however, since it's much easier to draw digitally, IMO; not necessarily skill-wise; but on your supplies, since you aren't potentially wearing out your paper as you erase. ^^'

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: KnightsFan on March 29, 2013, 05:03:14 pm
Anyone else done any concept work for movies or video games? That's what I mainly do now, though I'm pretty bad at it.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on March 29, 2013, 07:14:19 pm
Well, recently, some of the things I've been attempting have been involving the characters from my series, and one such character seems to be helping with the drawing; so technically yes, though concept art for things in general. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on March 29, 2013, 09:30:38 pm
Those are pretty cool; I must say. =D Realistic-style drawings are always intriguing to me, especially with those type of shading methods; it's always good to see when a good job is done with that. =)

The beer one is certainly... different, I have to say. Not something one would initially expect, but it works. =) The font is pretty cool too; I'd likely never be able to actually manage that. =P(Though, I said that about close up faces too, and I'm actually doing rather well with those recently. ^^')

The wolf, and the 3D model of Stitch is pretty cool, as well. The wolf looks very realistic, which is a nice feat. =)

The last post's link doesn't work currently, though.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: KnightsFan on March 29, 2013, 09:48:05 pm
It does if you copy/paste the entire thing.

But yeah, that's some cool stuff. The model looks fairly low-poly, too, which is great. My concept work is basically stick figures and blueprints for buildings :P

Title: Re: Drawing

Yes; I responded to it in the first two paragraphs of the last post. =P

The game seems interesting. I'm not gonna have a chance to play it anytime soon at all(Due to no iDevice), but it certain has an interesting feel to it, and the art style seems to fit it. =)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on March 30, 2013, 10:49:08 am
Sweet; my theory worked. I might not be able to export stuff I draw in Swapnote to images; but I can export game notes. =P

It's not the best, since it can't handle shading as well as Swapnote can; but, I did manage to draw something either way.

Here's the image. (http://www.majhost.com/gallery/NeoBlademanSC/Drawing/hni_0027_jpg.jpg)

I don't know why it decides to double up the file marker ending thing, though. =/

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 01, 2013, 06:33:22 pm
Here's just a quick little sketch of Misu that I did last night. Not perfect by any means, but for something that only took ten minutes, I think it's pretty good. Aside from the arms, and the fact that I didn't fully erase the guidelines. :P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 01, 2013, 08:10:01 pm
Not bad for being a quick sketch. There could be a could improvements, mostly involving the arms, as you said. =p Though, what's with the eye? I'll admit I'm not good at eyes either, and they usually look better with colour, but I'm still kinda confused about that left(To her) eye.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 01, 2013, 08:12:05 pm
I was too lazy to use a ruler to make sure the eyes were the same size. ^^;
If I'd used a ruler for the guidelines, the eyes would be the same shape and size.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 01, 2013, 08:40:45 pm
Actually, I mean the pupil parts or so. Not the actual eye shape. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 01, 2013, 08:46:11 pm
Oh. No, that's actually a valid way of drawing the pupils. I've been trying out multiple eye styles, and I think these are the ones that fit Misu best. Some of the other characters will probably have different pupil styles.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 01, 2013, 08:59:43 pm
Oh, wait; is it the 'dual light source with shading' technique? If so, then that does make perfect sense; but it'd make more sense in colour. =P

That seems pretty cool; though.

Just out of curiosity, what did people think of my test drawing? I can't really do much shading wise on Game Notes, but at least I can save that, so it'd tide me over until I get a proper dedicated drawing app on the 3DS.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Wantija$$$ on April 01, 2013, 09:52:56 pm
^ If your going to try to shade on the 3DS (on swapnote/game notes) I'd recommend cross-hatching (http://www.methart.com/tutorials/hatching1.jpg) (1/4 hatching to be specific) on basic objects such as a cube, sphere, pyramid (be sure how to draw 3D objects and use a light source!)

As for a drawing app on the 3DS, I'm assuming you know about Colours 3D. It's $6-7 but it's a good intro to digital art without having to buy a $150 tablet for your computer, plus it's getting a free update in April/May (iirc).

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 01, 2013, 10:38:16 pm
To get the arm, look at the branches on a tree...  (the bent y thing) for the underarm.. the shoulder should follow easily then

The skirt & feet are way cool.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 01, 2013, 11:27:53 pm
Good tip for arms, thanks!

The feet were a total (but happy) accident. They looked kinda terrible, and I started messing with them, ended up drawing socks, and finally ended up with them the way they are now.

Thanks. :D

I'm going to draw Kira next...her hair should be an interesting challenge.

Also, today I figured out how to draw a pizza. (I was trying to draw a cat, but I'm happy with a pizza too...)
I also figured out a good way to do close-ups of hands, but I'm saving that for the comic.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 02, 2013, 08:11:23 pm
Wantija: Hmm, I'll have to look at that when I have a chance. I know about Colors; I just don't have any spare funds on my account just yet; it's on my 'to-get' list, though, for sure. =P

Swapnote actually supports shading a little easier; it seems anti-aliased in a way, so the greyer segments act as partial shading.

Also, err, I'm kinda still learning how to draw. ^^' Consider that was over the past couple weeks, though, and in my spare time, I'm fairly impressed. =)

Truth: Nice; I should try pizza next. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 03, 2013, 03:52:59 pm
Just for the record:

Quote
We had an old trick while trying to learn to draw something tough...
Print a copy of what you want to draw.
Lay a thin sheet of paper over it.
Go over the outline over and over.
Do a second sheet.
Now try to draw it. The motions for that shape have become more natural.

That was said tip. =P

Title: Re: Drawing

Blade, no comments on what I drew?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 03, 2013, 04:05:16 pm
It was pretty cool, I have to say; Companion Cube shirt is cool as well, and the hair was very well done. That said, I can see a bit of the lines where the arm meets the body, though that's just me being picky. =P

The feet are very well done, though I don't know if it's just the way the legs are, but the left foot seems kinda almost like it's stepping on the right. But who am I to complain about feet? I'm horrible at them. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 03, 2013, 04:06:48 pm
1: That's the problem with trying to ink over pencil marks...the ink sometimes doesn't work.

2: Yeah...I noticed that AFTER I inked it. >_>

Also, I assume you know now why I call her Peacock Head. :P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 03, 2013, 04:11:46 pm
Ah, I see. *Nods*

xD

Yes, for the same reason Kaze might sometimes get called Turkey Head. =P(In fact, I'm surprised that joke's only been made in one comic series so far, it's a rather accurate description of his hair. xD

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 03, 2013, 04:15:38 pm
I've never seen a picture of Kaze.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 03, 2013, 04:17:29 pm
That's because I haven't drawn one yet, though I'm certain there was one before. =P I can't get 'turkey hair' correct, though. xD But, I did post a picture on the last page... Mind taking a look so I can get feedback?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 03, 2013, 04:21:40 pm
Well, I'm assuming you were going for manga style, so...
The main issue is the hair - if you draw too many lines, it starts to look messy. (I speak from experience, it took me two months to get Misu's hair right)
The mouth was also a bit too large, since in Manga, the mouth is usually drawn about the same size as the nose.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 03, 2013, 04:22:45 pm
TIP:

wipe your eraser off after every use.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 03, 2013, 04:29:05 pm
Truth: It was kinda that style, yes. Kinda a mix being realistic and magna, but more manga. =P

Hmm... I was trying to have it take on a type of 'blowing in the wind' effect, that I can't really get with the length of her hair otherwise. xD

Note to self: Make head smaller next time. =P Though, it might make the eyes even harder to pull off. xD I'll start with the mouth stuff, though.

MsRR: Good idea; though I don't typically draw physically, just digitally right now. Might change that, though.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 07, 2013, 09:34:06 pm
I wanted to see  if my coloured pencils were any good, so I coloured the sketch of Kira.

(Verdict: Buy new pencils, these one are the size of a fingernail)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 07, 2013, 10:24:22 pm
The hair and eyes are especially excellent! I like the color combo.. you may want to use chalk for the coloring part.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 07, 2013, 10:36:22 pm
Chalk...that is a really good idea, thanks!
(For the record, Kira's hair is very close to Mulberry, one of my two favourite colours)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 08, 2013, 04:32:04 am
Chalk is great fun, as you can custom blend colors as well..

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 08, 2013, 09:58:04 am
Only problem is, I can't stand how chalk feels in my hand, so I'd need gloves or something. (Weird, I know)

Title: Re: Drawing

Here, just a quick colouring of the sketch I did of Misu.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 17, 2013, 09:23:02 pm
The eyes are getting better. Can you actually link an example of what you're trying for them? I feel bad bringing it up every single time, but I'm still not entirely certain what style you're going for, since my original theory didn't match the colouring. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 17, 2013, 10:52:55 pm
hair color would be better imho

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 18, 2013, 05:22:13 pm
Blade: Who says I can't have my own eye style? I'm still experimenting, right now I'm messing around with the whites and the colouring.

MSRR: Actually, her hair is supposed to be a pale brown...this is why you don't colour things in the dark. >_>

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 18, 2013, 05:33:08 pm
LOL...

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 18, 2013, 06:52:33 pm
Truth: No-one said you couldn't; I'm just unsure how it's supposed to look, since there's so much stuff that seems like it might show where the eyes are pointing, and so little pupils. =P No offence meant by any of this; I'm genuinely just wondering about that. xD I'm guessing the white part is the light source, but I'm still not sure what the darker portion at the bottom is. ^^'

Other than the eyes, Misu is really going well. =D

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 18, 2013, 07:26:51 pm
Honestly, the only way to tell where the eyes are pointing is to look at the whole face - the eyes point the same way as the face most of the time. The dark spots are the irides.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 18, 2013, 07:53:04 pm
The dots at the bottom left part of the eyes are the irises? Or am I misinterpreting what you meant? =P The other explanation makes a little more sense; and I once again apologize for nitpicking over eyes, when I can barely draw to save my life. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on April 18, 2013, 10:08:38 pm
The dots are the irides, yes. (Irises is the incorrect plural)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on April 18, 2013, 10:11:50 pm
So, then what's the rings on the eyes? Again, sorry for so many questions, but you're the only one who knows what you're thinking. =P

Title: Re: Drawing

"rings"? You mean the whites? :P

(Also, what makes you think I know what I'm thinking?)

Those look pretty good truth! If you want some constructive criticism, I'd say try to shade more. But, that's my personal preference, I'm a little bit over enthusiastic for shading. If I figure out how to get pictures on here, I can post a couple that I'm pretty proud of that I've done. Oh, I was going to ask, what do you use for drawing? I have a set of drawing pencils and then 4 drawings pens (S, M, F, and Brush), and I usually avoid color. =P

Mahri: I did shade more. The scanner dulled the colours for some reason. :/

(also, I use a #2 pencil, misc coloured pencils, and a black ink pen)

It is very good; yes. =)

I'm unsure on the arms; the left seems about double the size of the other; but as usual, I'm by no means one to speak. =P

You can try drawing one on a separate sheet, cutting it out, and using as a template.. bending as needed...

Girls know this because of paper dolls. :)

Title: Re: Drawing

I might try that...but right now, I'm more interested in trying some weird poses. For my next sketch, I want to try to draw Nami falling down the stairs. :P

I kinda wish I could post my Muununalla sketch, but...I promised myself not to post anything spoilery.

Title: Re: Drawing

101.. OK. If it is a scanner copier you just lay the book on it whole without closing the lid, unless it has a height adjustable lid like my old dinosaur.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on May 22, 2013, 09:16:14 am
Really? Once I get this thing hooked up, I'll have to try that, see if that works. There should be enough room that that works, so hopefully it does. =)

Also, slight credit to Truth for mentioning the artist who made the 'how to draw' book that's helping him; I found how to draw tutorial videos by him, which helped me. =P Credit also goes to a good friend for getting me to actually start practicing drawing of course. =P

Title: Re: Drawing

The hands are much, much better with the new thumb design. Well done figuring that out. =)

Idea for the shoulders and underarms; curve them slightly, especially if you do the arms after starting the torso. Even if you already have lines done, you can influence them slightly by adding some lines on top I've noticed. =)

Title: Re: Drawing

First coloured one
(http://th00.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2013/192/3/2/flower_garden_2_3_character__visra_by_redherochild-d6d3rc4.png)

Notes: I decided to name this character "Visra". The other character from the original sketch, the "blind seer" style one, had some inking errors (same for the one of Emma), so I need to edit it. But for the record, that character's name is Liralee.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on July 19, 2013, 02:34:37 am
Ugh...first inking attempt, Emma's face is ruined and Liralee's hands go horribly wrong.
Second attempt, Emma becomes weirdly washed out and Liralee loses an arm. >_>
At least I only need to worry about feet with Emma...that's the nice thing about characters like Muununalla and Liralee - talons instead of hard-to-draw feet.

Okay, that arm-to-the-side pose is awesome. The proportions with the arms and legs are correct, though, right? I'm not meaning it to say the drawing's bad or anything(On the contrary, it's very cool. =D), but something seems off with the proportions to me; almost like she's shorter than she should be or soemthing, and I think it might be related to the legs. But again, aside from that, the sketch is pretty cool. =)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on August 10, 2013, 12:35:51 pm
It could be that her legs are short...with her miniskirt there, I have no point of reference for the tops of her legs. :P
(she's definitely not a short character, she's 5'8'')
Thanks. :D

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on August 10, 2013, 01:02:00 pm
Why not try drawing the legs first, then putting the miniskirt on her; or make approximations for where the legs would be even with the skirt? =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on August 10, 2013, 01:03:50 pm
Well, in this case I was editing a preexisting image (the prior drawing I did of her) - I just redrew the arms, feet, and chest.

Title: Re: Drawing

Title: Re: Drawing

Really interesting...  I think you should start with stick figures to get the proportions next time..
You did the head in hands very well, the feet are really well done.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on September 14, 2013, 09:17:24 am
I agree with MsRR; though there's one thing about Leila; her body almost looks a little too 'two dimensional', so to speak. Like, her arms are there; but the right arm looks almost like it's from the left side because of how the layering happened.  That said, I think I actually see what happened there; you should start angling the shirt a little earlier maybe; because right now it seems to me almost as if it's just going straight down, then, well, yeah.

Not bad at all, though. =)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 14, 2013, 02:38:25 pm
Well, it turns out drawing someone slouching is tricky. :P

What happened with her arm was that my pen didn't properly ink it, and I didn't notice until I'd already erased all the guidelines, so I had to eyeball where the arm should start.

And obviously, I still need to work on arms. Misu's arms are really weirdly proportioned.

Title: Re: Drawing

Here's a few drawings I've done! The last one took me about 6 hours, but I'd just started getting into drawing again. I can go through ones like that in closer to 2 or 3 now. The second one took me around 2 hours, but I'm going to be honest, I'm terrible at drawing humans realistically, it was supposed to be Hawke from DA: II, but turned out rather unfortunately proportioned. And that first one was just for an art class.

(Linked because her shirt is a little too...little)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on September 26, 2013, 11:34:20 pm
I see some improvements. Note on legs.. hips should be wider than legs in most cases.

The flower in her hand is awesome!! The clothing, hair etc are great and the shoulders are much better.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 26, 2013, 11:40:07 pm
The problem with the hips is that, with her cloak doing it's fancy swirling thing, I have a very hard time estimating where the hips should me.
(I also started the legs too far down and put them a bit too far apart)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on September 26, 2013, 11:52:48 pm
Just have the legs straight down fon the sides of the dress more or less.. The legs themselves look better (shape wise not size)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on September 27, 2013, 08:12:39 am
How long ARE the legs supposed to be, anyway? =P

Arms, shoulders, and such look very good, though, I must say. =D

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 27, 2013, 08:40:58 am
Blade: It's not the length that looks weird - it's that I made her body much too long, so the legs started too far down.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on September 27, 2013, 10:55:02 am
That's what I mean; how long should the body actually be, and are those her knees?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 27, 2013, 12:10:01 pm
If she were life-sized, her body is about two inches too long.
If you mean the lines between the thighs and lower leg, yes, if you mean the talons at the bottom, no. Those are talons. :P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on September 27, 2013, 12:49:34 pm
Yeah, the lines. =P It just seems like there's a sudden transition from knee to foot, that's all, only reason I asked. =P (Unless she's got weird proportions to begin with or so, I just think the knee would likely be hidden behind the dress. ^^')

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 27, 2013, 04:23:00 pm
The knees would be more obvious, but I was inking with a bad pen. I need to start testing my pens before I start inking.
Well, if I hadn't goofed, the dress wouldn't have gone down so far anyway. (Dress isn't actually the right word, since it stops right above where her thighs start)

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Mahri828 on September 28, 2013, 02:05:39 am
You can get some great drawing pens for less than $10 in a lot of places. Especially amazon XD I looked through the drawings you started with, you've definitely improved a lot truth!

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 28, 2013, 04:48:35 pm
Any brand in particular I should look for?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Mahri828 on September 30, 2013, 04:04:24 pm
The type I like to use is Faber-Castell, but I'm going to caution you, only get the set of 4! To be honest, the bigger sets are really finite differences in the pen tips, and the 4 set comes with a brush that works decently. What I tend to do is buy a black sharpie to go along with the pen sizes, and it works pretty well. I'll put up the latest pen drawing I did, and that one of Hecarim (looks like a centaur) was also done in pen, though I used pencil first.

Not really sure why her right (our left) hip is jutting out so much. Maybe I made her waist too small?

Also not sure why it's zoomed in so much..the original image (http://redherochild.deviantart.com/art/Flower-Garden-2-3-Character-Sketch-Jennifer-Keinz-404268621) is a better size.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on September 30, 2013, 07:03:07 pm
Waist could be bigger, yes.

Are those jeans, though? Just curious, since it looked like a pocket on the side or something.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 30, 2013, 07:04:32 pm
Nah, just an inking error. :P
I did order new pens though, so that should help.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Mahri828 on September 30, 2013, 08:34:08 pm
Woah! She looks pretty good. Only overall thing I would say is to maybe make the hips curve a little more into their size = P Great job overall though!

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on September 30, 2013, 10:19:05 pm
Thanks! I also spent the past few hours looking into better ways of doing thighs, waists, and hips, so I'll try that in my next sketch.
Then I want to work on having characters with bodies that are turned slightly off to the side...that's really hard to do.

(also, I ordered the pens)

Yay for pens! = P And yeah, that's a good idea. There's a guy on youtube... er... Proko something or another, he does a bunch of tutorials for drawing all the aspects of people, but it's less anime and more realistic type drawings. You've definitely been getting a lot better though.

Quick sketch of the character Visra. Any weirdness with her hair is because I neglected to notice some loose pencil led on the page as I was inking it, and it got caught on my pen.

http://redherochild.deviantart.com/art/Flower-Garden-2-3-Visra-409341620

EDIT: I realised I never replied to Mahri. Anyway: You have a really unique art style, I like it! (Sort of a realistic cartoon, if that makes sense?)

EDIT 2: OK, it's too big when I post it here, so now it's a link.

That one's good! I think something that you could do to help with the form is maybe broaden the shoulders just a tad and then make it so that the forearms were thinner than the bicep/tricep area. But overall great!

And thanks! It's from the TV show Archer, and it was actually pretty fun to try out drawing like that!

Here's one I just did, I like it a lot: http://redherochild.deviantart.com/art/Misu-Rami-Halloween-409498347

Only issue is the colours got washed out a little, so I'll probably reupload it.

Title: Re: Drawing

Looking good; though just as a mention, the torso shouldn't be that long. ^^'

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on October 25, 2013, 08:04:48 pm
Hm...it doesn't seem that off to me, but I do have trouble gauging torso length when drawing a dress. (There's a sentence I never expected to say :P)

EDIT: fixed the colours.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on October 25, 2013, 08:25:40 pm
The hips are too far down. =P hands usually end up about mid-way down the upper leg from what I've noticed from my own attempts at drawing things, and watching tutorials and the like. As it is, the length doesn't look too bad; but the hips are too far down for placement. maybe extend the lower arm just a slight bit as a test? It's not too bad, but I think that the upper and lower arms are about even normally. It doesn't have to be exact, but the hips here are what's causing me to do a double take. =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on October 25, 2013, 08:42:49 pm
I think it's more likely that the arms are too short, not that the torso is too long. Arms are still my bane.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on October 25, 2013, 09:00:24 pm
All in all it is FABULOUS!
Torso is a bit long, but on the other hand it could be a dropped waist gown... shoulder to hip= hip to toe.
The chest is still up a bit high, but better. The top of the )( should be no higher than the armpit.. unless you want to smother her when she sits down.

Dropped waist gown example..

One of my friends gave me some tips for drawing torsos, so I used this one to practice:
http://redherochild.deviantart.com/art/Flower-Garden-2-3-At-the-Park-410366716

Might have made her waist a bit too thin, though...Oh well, internal organs are optional, right?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on October 29, 2013, 10:12:58 pm
Great... much better part placement. Now to balance size.. underarm measurement & hip measurement on most females is roughly equal +?-  a few inches.  Marilyn Monroe was 36-24-36
Normal girls would have the waist at about 29-30.
SO If you make the torso striped vertically you can add a bit to both sides  Maybe ! ! that size stripe or a bit smaller.
Fabulous progress!!

Hey Truth, something that might help that I often forget to do myself, especially in pencil drawings. Shade the whites of the eyes along with everything else! As long as you leave it light, it helps the eyes pop more and it actually (shockingly enough) looks more realistic.

Edit: Just finished this drawing using a tutorial on youtube. Used #2 pencil and a black colored pencil, too, me about 45 minutes.

Unfortunately I was working up close with colored pencil when that happened = P But it's okay, I'm just trying to get better right now.  Mostly I was having a hard time making the cheek look correct, because the fur does poof out like that. Just... not quite how I did it = P Thanks though!

One of these days I'm going to ditch coloured pencils and use markers or something.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on November 01, 2013, 05:57:05 pm
Awesome!!  Very well done.. I would only change the top of the inner thigh to not curve in..

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on November 03, 2013, 09:27:19 pm
Shell: Looks good, though there's a couple things; the thigh being part of it, as it would normally do... not that. =P Also, the left arm's elbow seems to be doing something kinda odd to me? I'd think the curve should be the opposite way, but that might be just me. ^^' Definitely getting better, so keep up the practice for sure. ^^

Park: Okay, between this and Shell, you are doing fantastic. Waist is definitely something to consider, but something to keep in mind? You did that perfectly, you just need more spacing. =) If the top part was just a bit to the left and right on either side respectively, it would just work. The thigh comment is a little bit noticeable there, but less so. The only thing that's really odd is... What the heck is going on with the skirt at the back? xP

Now I want to draw, again. I think I brought my sketchbook, though the question is whether I brought my pencil and eraser...

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on November 03, 2013, 09:33:38 pm
Thighs: No clue what happened there. Definitely not intentional. :P
Arm: I have no clue whatsoever how to make the arm curve.

Park:
Waist: I've done a few of Misu since then that fix the waist issue, and also tried some new poses...not planning on uploading them though. (too much Misu would get boring :P)
Skirt: A failed attempt at 3D?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on November 03, 2013, 09:49:56 pm
Thighs: Heh. =P
Arms: Then try not to focus on making the arm curve. =P If you look at arms closely, there's more of a curve outward at the elbow, because of the bones there acting as a joint. That said, the curve isn't too obvious, it's more of a subtle curve, and is more pronounced on the inner part of the arm, from what I can see. =P

Waist: You should upload them eventually anyway; showing the progression is always a good thing, and as long as you pretty much explain that it's to help you practice and such, I doubt anyone would mind, and would like to see the evolution of your style. =P
Skirt: Makes sense. =P Something to consider is that you don't need to think too hard about it. I'm probably the worst person to explain this, since I can't for the life of me draw soemthing like a cel-shaded 3D model, but still. =P In your head, picture the scene as if it's a 3D scene like you'd see in, say X or Y. Easiest way to describe since it's done good at emulating the old style of battles with 3D, so it works for my example. For things like the skirt, think about how it would appear. In this case, it looks like it's sticking up in said 3D scene; if you want it to be more like how it would be in a 3D scene, an idea would be to drop the lines a little bit; gradually hiding the back a bit. Or at least not flipping it upward like that, since it looks like the wind caught it, and yeah. =P

That said, that part under Misu's chest really seemed like shading when I wasn't really concentrating on looking at the lines and such; might be something to keep in mind for shading. =) And also, shading will help with the 3D nature a lot too. ;)

Anime characters tend to have creepily-thin and long necks. (See: Reiko in Another for a good example)

Any tips for like backgrounds?

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on November 24, 2013, 05:04:07 pm
Hm...the most important thing to remember with backgrounds is angles and heights. If something is higher up, it looks further back, and things in the background are generally slightly slanted so it looks like they're moving away from the reader.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on November 24, 2013, 05:16:24 pm
Hmm... I'll have to practice that later, then.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Wantija$$$ on November 24, 2013, 09:45:03 pm
For getting perspective right in backgrounds I'd recommend looking up tutorials on 1-point persecutive and 2-point perspective. Make sure to have the focal point (characters, objects ect whatever is the main thing you're drawing) stand out from the background; don't have too much clutter.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on November 24, 2013, 09:58:49 pm
Hmm, you have a point there, yeah. I almost forgot about that, though maybe I should also start with one thing at a time. I'm getting better at drawing characters, but that means nothing for backgrounds, as I need a lot more practice drawing even normal objects. =P

Title: Re: Drawing

Steins;Gate uses too much of a "realistic" art style, though. My art style is more cartoony.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on December 03, 2013, 10:49:22 pm
Not that realistic, though. =P And it's still a good guide for necks, though a rough estimate of between there and what's now is good. =P

Round out her right thigh on the inside. One thigh overlaps the other in this pose, even with a thin girl.

And I would simply call her Star.. or the equivalent in another language. (French or German maybe) even if it is for anime.

Today I started trying to draw people from behind. You have to draw the head totally differently, it's a lot harder than I thought.
I should also start practicing drawing males. It's the eyes that are tricky for them...

Title: Re: Drawing

Title: Re: Drawing

They're smaller, so they're harder to get right.

Title: Re: Drawing

Who should I draw next? Options:

Flower Garden 2/3 characters:
Muununalla
Nami Korukawa
Leila Otomo
Ravidjenya
Misu and Leila together (likely will be Leila hugging Misu or something)

RPG Characters:
Haley
The White Woman
Emily RGB
Nuke-Tan
Drone-Tan (Zeze)

EDIT: Also, I chose a name for the "Generic Girl." I'm naming her Nova Celestine.

Here's one I did over Christmas break, of minor Flower Garden 2/3 character Jennifer Keinz:

After this I'm planning on sketches of Nuke-tan and Zeze, then Nami and Haley.

Finally got around to coloring the Christmas sketch.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on January 17, 2014, 03:43:49 pm
Keinz: Arms should be overlapping a bit more, I think. =P Not bad, overall, at the crossed arms pose, though; I need to practice that a lot. Not sure what it is about those pupils, though; they're correct, and what I keep bugging you to include, but something just seems... I don't know. It's weird that I find issue with it... Maybe it's just me. xP

Group: Not much to say. =P

Nami: Very good, those pupils are fine to me, which reinforces my question of 'why the heck did I take issue with the others?'. =P The legs are pretty well done there. The elbow needs to be a bit pointier in that situation, though, and I'm confused where the hand vanished to, but overall very good. ^^ I'd comment on the ear, but I'm horrible at ears, so I'll just smile and nod there.

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on January 17, 2014, 07:30:17 pm
The problem with Keinz' pupils isn't the pupils themselves, it's that her eyes are a bit of a bizarre shade of pink, making her eyes look a bit...well, bizarre.  FOR EXAMPLE (http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120128011752/futurediary/images/a/a5/YunoYandereFace.jpg)

Her hand is going behind her and on her other cheek. It's not comfortable, but it is a physically possible position. :P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: Blade on January 17, 2014, 09:47:48 pm
Oooh; I see now, I thought it might've been the pink that did it. =P

Then the other question is, where's her other arm? =P

Title: Re: Drawing
Post by: The Truth on January 17, 2014, 10:36:34 pm
Behind her. It wouldn't be visible at the angle she's lying.

Looks good Truth! I recommend you check out Mark Crilley on YouTube or buy one of his manga books: He has a lot of nice information for how to to draw those things.

Here's a bear sketch I do as some preliminary tattoo design for a friend. Let me know what ya think (Just a sketch, the actual artist would fix up errors and design... I hope)!

Vaguely NSFW, fanart of my favorite servant from Fate/Grand Order. Drew it to celebrate maxing out all her stats after two years of effort.

I drew this as an entry for a contest.
Pixiv might ask you for an account, a "mature content" thing seems to have turned on and I have no idea how to turn it off.

I asked the Pixiv staff and they said it was OK to repost on Deviantart.

Her hair ended up a bit spikier than I intended but I'm still happy with the final product.

I realize I never stop in here anymore, but when I do I like to check in on your latest drawings Truth. You've made some awesome progress since the first few you've posted, they're looking great. :)

But it is a drawing thread, so I've attached a graphite study I did of a character a while back!
