FIRST LEGO League is a worldwide program for kids 9-14 years old. There are tens of thousands of teams around the world, and each year teams are given a completely new challenge and then they have a few weeks to build a robot out of LEGO Mindstorms and complete a science research project and presentation related to the overall theme. At competitions, they compete against dozens of other teams on a table-top field, attempting to complete mission models made of LEGO. They also present their innovative solution to solve a problem related to the theme as young professionals to a panel of friendly judges. The program is designed to provide kids with employment and life skills, while providing an awesome foundation in STEM subjects.

So where have I been for the past three months?? Well, along with school I have decided to start and coach a FIRST LEGO League team. And they did awesome at their regional and they are moving on to championships in December!! Yes, I have been very busy working with them, but it is what I enjoy. FIRST LEGO League (or FLL) is the perfect combination for me of inspiring others, LEGO, robotics, teaching, other STEM subjects, and helping the kids to make new discovers and develope new skills. It really is a blast. If you have an interest in LEGO and working with kids, perhaps starting or mentoring a team is for you!! Smiley

Have you heard of FLL? Does coaching or mentoring sound interesting to you? If you are in the age range of 9-14, does joining a team sound like fun? More information at firstlegoleague.org

This is awesome! Thank you for helping to invest in the lives of kids like you have done! I've been mentoring FLL for the past two years. They have done an incredible job, starting with 4 kids and going to world festival last year. This year they decided to invite 4 rookies to join them. They did a fantastic job at their regional and will be moving onto th state competition in 2 weeks! FLL is truly an incredible program and I defiantly echo the call for more coaches!

Awesome, Jayko! It is always exciting to see FIRST graduates come back and mentor! Hey, did you ever get involved with an FRC team?
Sounds like you have an incredible group of kids! How long had they been around before you started mentoring? Congrats on moving on to state! If you don't mind me asking, which of the three areas are they strongest in?

MsRR, I think of you when I think of people who would do a brilliant job and really enjoy starting a team. Smiley And thanks, I have learned just as much as the kids have.

Nope, haven't due to time commitment and the fact that the closest team is 45 minutes away. I am barely keeping up with my school as it is.
2 of the kids are 4 year veterans, both being my sibling and the sibling of my former teammate (now mentor-mate, or what ever you call that) one has 2 years under his belt, and one has one year. The rest are rookies with limited NXT skills. Was proud of them when I arrived at the meeting Tuesday afternoon, to find out that one of the rookies had been there since 10 in the morning! State is this weekend and they have 3 hours of meeting time left. Just have to tie the loose ends together and we should be good to go!

Was reading in the local paper about a FLL team at the Junior High School. Even if students don't go on to pursue science or technology, the thinking, workmanship and dedication that this teaches will stay with them forever. It's quite amazing!

Exactly how I feel. Smiley

Yes Cheesy I am extremely proud of how much FIRST LEGO League has grown. I plan on personally starting a second team this year. The incredible things that FLL kids do- from sharing their love of science and math with others to coming up with innovative solutions to problems- is simply amazing.
