Hey,
  Can you guys tell me how to make pretty good backgrounds in photoshop? I'm trying to get into the yearbook electivenext year and (though I probably will and be able to use photoshop really well) want to be prepaired. Any help?

Just play with all the filters until you have a general idea of what they do, then combine them.  That'll usually get you some good stuff.

That and the thing over his helmet is a little blurry.  Did you use Illustrator or the PS pen tool?

Actually, I used Fireworks.
For more detailed pen tool work, I like the Fw pen best.

I don't, but I heard another Adobe tutorial website is coming out within the month. This one's suppposed to be really good... all I know how to do really is make lightning, tornados, and some other stuff.

I wish I had Photoshop, and a guide book to it. I only need about £350 more (LOL)! I guess if I want Photoshop I better steal my brother's computer (LOL)!

As a student, you should be able to get PS CS4E for about $200, smaller amount in your currency.  I don't know if that applies to students under college level though (they want you to be serious about it I guess).  You should search for student pricing on adobe products.

It's even "cheaper" if you buy one of the packages, as far as price of what you get.  I got the entire Design Premium suite (Ps, Ai, Fl, Id, Dw, and Fw) for $400 from journeyed.com.
