After having to install TooManyItems for a particular adventure map (there was a spot where I accidentally trapped myself, with no way out but to break blocks, and I needed Creative for that, thus TMI), I'm no longer scared of installing mods, so I may try this with the Technic Pack once there is a stable Technic release for 1.3.

I tried to install the shader mod, but I couldn't get it to work for me.
Still, though, I bet that thing is more taxing than
Crysis. Not even kidding, since MC is unoptimized Java.
