People prefer 24 fps because all movies since about the 1920's have been done in 24. Sharper pictures lose their "film-like quality," or so the haters argue. It's somewhat true, but 3D tends to have fuzzier pictures so the 48 fps might actually look better in 3D.

If it's stable, it can be rather good, with no real problems. But if it fluctuates too much, then yeah, you're gonna notice a lot of problems.

True, sometimes it's better to just limit the FPS at a certain level, helps keep it from dropping below and after a few minutes you don't notice it anymore if it's over 15.

That is something that wouldn't make sense, and would just be people not thinking. =P 60 is a happy medium; it's fast and smooth, but not too fast for whatever it is to display.

As long as I have 30+ I'm happy.

And sometimes sacrifices have to be made. Metal Gear Solid 2 ran at 60 FPS, but MGS3 only ran at 30 because of the increased visual clutter.

But I prefer 60+ myself.

As you cross 20 however you start getting diminishing returns for every ten added FPS. So you might be buying a GPU twice as expensive as the one that runs a game at 30FPS to run it at 60FPS, but you'd barely notice the difference without FRAPS.

And yes, I know futureproofing is a factor when you're buying a GPU, that was just to make a point =P

For the people talking about framerate:
24 fps actually does look more like a "movie" than 48, because our brains are used to the blur. Adding a film grain doesn't solve the problem. Ever wonder why soap operas look fake? The TV-standard 30 fps is one of the main causes, along with overlighting.

Video games are different because there is no motion blur, and it actually hurts our eyes to have a perceptible gap between the frames without the motion blurring. Also, we're used to higher frame rate games.

Hmm, my mistake for that then. Though, is it possible to add artificial motion blur? It'd likely delay a huge movie by a long time, but if people want higher frame rates and motion blur at the same time...

High frame rates are an alternative to motion blur, I don't think they're often used concurrently.

As far as I know, the only way to artificially add motion blur is to render several frames and then merge them (which takes FOREVER - I have personal experience with that), so video games just go for higher frame rates to cut down rendering time.

I had more meant for a movie, if people wanted to keep a 'traditional' look, while keeping a smoother running movie; which might be good in the future for streaming videos, since Netflix is so popular.
