Okay, so, a new knife for Spy was released in TF2. It functions just like the default, looks really, really awesome, and is called the Black Rose.

I want.

The catch, though, is that it's a promo with another game. You have to download that game and obtain an achievement. Fortunately, the game is free to play and the achievement is really easy - just play one single round.

The other catch is that it's Windows exclusive.

Fine, I said. I have a virtual machine set up. It's how I've been playing Half-Life, after all. Just boot that up and I am on my way.

Except when I booted it up I got a really, really weird error. I did some internet searching and found there were two solutions: I could reinstall or I could just boot it up from Terminal.

Well, fine, I said. Reinstalling will take a while, booting from Terminal is quick.

Except Terminal isn't working either. It's saying that, per an administrator, I don't have permission to run it. It's saying my shell has been set to an illegal value.

I've got a disk repair running now. If this doesn't work, I don't know what I'm going to do.

EDIT: Permissions repair complete, aaaaaaaannnnnddddd.... Still not working. If I have to reinstall the whole ******* OS, I will.

Does rooting it allow you to do stuff that you'd normally need an account for, without the account? Just curious, there.

some, not all (still no market, most everything else can be worked around pretty easily tho)

And i feel alot safer using google than i do any other company. Sure google collects information about me, but

a) they tell me exactly what they collect
b) a lot of it is anonymous data
c) almost 100% of the data is never seen by human eyes, its all automated
d) google swears in many legally binding contracts with many different governments to never sell your data.
e) are stong opponents of wiretapping, internet censorship, regulations, ect.

now, lets look at microsoft. they:

a) reserve the right to collect any data they want about you
b) do not necessarily have to tell you why or what for
c) will keep a backup copy of anything you put online via their services that they will continue to use after you get rid of it
d) will sell your data to "any third parties as deemed fit by microsoft"
e) will not inform you of what of your data was sold, or to who
f) fully supports and complies with wiretapping, government data analysis, and taking control out of the user's hands.


so yes, i use as many google services as possible. in this day in age, the problem is not if your data will be collected - that's guaranteed, if you have any computer access at all. the issue is who collects it. and i trust google more than any other big company right now (MS, apple, ect)

The thing is; why do people just let that happen? =/ Privacy should remain private. Gotta agree with you on the better than M$, though; but hey: I don't use anything Microsoft related aside from XP, so I should be good. =P(Hence why I'm probably gonna just dual boot the moment I get a new laptop, but boot up a Linux variant more often. =P)

It was a problem with VMWare, which is third-party software. No idea what was up with Terminal, but it took less than a minute to fix.

And anyhow, I just rebooted and it magically resolved itself. Best kind of problem.
