So I guess you all hate games like Minecraft and such because they have no story. And yet it ended up being one of the most successful,

GAMES DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A STORY TO BE GOOD

and I thought we played games for the GAMEPLAY. I THOUGHT THAT WAS THE ENTIRE POINT OF GAMES. NOT THE STORY. THERE IS A REASON WHY GAMES ARE INTERACTIVE.

IF YOU WANT STORY GO WATCH A MOVIE. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE ALL THINKING OF AND CONFUSING GAMES WITH. IF A GAME DOES NOT HAVE GAMEPLAY AND IS JUST CUTSCENES IT IS NOT A GAME.

I will admit I've never played Minecraft, so I can't speak for it specifically. But I believe games of that genre are popular because they allow a pygmalion-esque method of creating one's own story. Also, people play games literally to waste time, and in that case you'd be right that they don't care about a story. I'm talking about games that require a little bit of thought and time commitment to play (not minesweeper or similar).

The fact that games are interactive simply adds a new dimension, just as films have an added layer that books lack. In Deus Ex, the story is literally built around player choices. I'm a little confused: are you arguing that games shouldn't have stories at all? That's like saying movies shouldn't have conversations because that's what books are for.

Also, story isn't just the sequence of events. It's also the characterization and nuances that make a game world believable. My favorite sequence in the original CoD was the car ride. You just sat in a seat and shot enemies, but the conversation between your friendly AI was so funny it was an awesome mission. Virtually every subsequent installation of CoD tried to emulate that mission, even though it had less gameplay than any other mission. Or take Bioshock, in which half the awesomeness comes from the narrations from various people about the downfall of Rapture.

I would also agree with Flipz that story is A reason and not THE reason games are fun, though for me personally, story is a huge part of games.

You're right, a game doesn't need a story. I dare you to develop a plotline for checkers, or tetris.  However, when a game is supposed to have a plot, the value of the game to the player is directly tied to the quality of the storyline. And a fps with a true plot, much less a good one, is quite rare.

Actually, there are versions of those games that have plots added in. And even movies based on games, like Battleship, or this:

But having a lot of hours sunk into Halo CE after I was introduced to it last year, I can say that it is actually really great. It plays well, and Bungie knew what they were doing. Both single- and multi-player are great, and it's surprisingly cerebral. Twitchy CoD-esque game this ain't - you have to choose the right tools for the job and design your angle of approach. The health regen actually adds to the strategy - you have to know when to retreat and heal.

(Except for the Library, I have no idea what they were thinking when they designed that level. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call it one of the worst FPS levels ever, and it's just thrown into an otherwise-great game.)

Also, the story is great and the soundtrack is epic. and . There's more variation in the soundtrack than that, though: for instance .

North Korea is seriously nuts if they expect no response from the US about that video. They also don't seem to know their geography. As well as reactions from the many countries the US is allied with. Try to go to war with the US, and it'll pretty much end up going to war with half of the world.

It's probably a good thing. Most of the 3D conversions really aren't worth watching. Besides, except for a few scenes, Star Wars isn't a very 3D-friendly movie.
