I agree that we should all have the ABILITY to be connected at all times.  I don't think there's any good reason why anyone should not be allowed the ability to access the vast sea of information and innovation that is the internet, just like I don't think there's any reason anyone should be denied the ability to access a library.  However, I also think we should have the ABILITY (and discipline!) to disconnect from technology and connect to each other, person to person, face to face.

For me, constant connectivity looks like this:

Funny that you miss the point of smartphones, and most of what computers are used for. They make human interaction EASIER. Whenever you want, wherever you want. AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.

I can pick my phone and use it to look my uncle (who's on vacation on the other side of the world) in the eyes and tell him something. I can keep up with friendships that would have dissolved over time, I can keep in contact with my grandparents at arms length instead of Ostracising them.


And i can meet people and make friendships that would have never happened otherwise. Unless this very conversation isn't "real". The Internet must not count as human infraction then, by your definition. So why are you being part of the very thing you're so against? Just by taking to me you're "forsaking proper human interaction" so technology can "rule your life" and such. By your very own beliefs, you're a massive hypocrite.

MTM, you are one of the few people I know who consistently uses technology for intelligent, humanity-improving purposes, rather than cheap consumerist garbage.  It's unfortunate but true that people who operate intelligently are in the minority, and likely will be for the forseeable future.

That said, you're kind of overreacting, and I get the sense you're not entirely responding to JUST MsRR, whether you realize that or not.  PM?

MSRR, on a similar note, while I somewhat agree with some of the ideas you've presented on the subject, the memes unfortunately cheapen the message somewhat.  The issues of the place of technology in society and the lack of connection among human beings are of extremely high importance, and in my view they do deserve to be treated seriously.  (I also feel that they are two interrelated BUT separate issues, we've had issues with human connection long before smartphones, long before the internet, long before telephones; technology is just making that underlying issue more apparent.  The symptom rather than the cause, if you will.)  Also, your particular use of the term "agenda" was rather inflammatory; while I understand that it was not entirely unprovoked, in my humble opinion that use of the word does not have a place among civilized, intelligent discussion--at least, not when it is being applied to the other participant (when used in that manner the argument almost always collapses along the lines of an instance of Godwin's Law, and in fact it's often an early warning sign that an instance of the Law may be coming).  Accusations of "agenda" are one reason I dislike politics in general; it tends to indicate that one or both sides are, consciously or subconsciously, attempting to transform the other into straw man versions of the original participants, and sadly it often works.

Okay, okay, break it up ladies; let's step back, and look at Flipz's post for a minute.

Alright, good? Let's take a breather then. I agree with all of you. None of you are wrong... In the bigger picture. First off, Flipz brought some sanity to a discussion that was quickly turning into a heated argument; and for the purposes of this, serves as 'balance'. MsRR brought up the point of real world interaction, which was taken to be one extreme; while MTM thinks that the internet should be treated seriously, for better purposes.

Here's the thing. Again, you're all right. Real World interaction is still a very good thing to have. Take a break from the discussion to listen to Paul Brandt's song 'Virtual Life' for a moment; I've listened to that since before this site was even started, and yet only now am I realizing it's meaning. Sometimes you have to wind down and interact with people in real life; though, that's not always possible.

Therefore, on the other hand, you have the cyber world; the ability to instantly stay connected to anyone in the world via stuff like Facebook, Twitter, livestreams, and that sorta thing. This is perfect especially for those who, say, don't have any IRL friends, or want to get more friends through places like these.

But in the middle; you have the balance, the fact that both worlds co-exist. You can hop onto a computer; or you could head to a mall or a museum. Really is your choice in the end; but that's the great thing about balance, it is your choice.

Wanna know something? If there were no technology or anything, I don't know what I'd do. Because as Flipz said, issues with interaction have occurred a lot throughout time; and you know what? I've had issues with that a lot. I've constantly been told 'oh the internet is not good, there is no way you can have friends you haven't even met, it's a huge waste of time' and so on and so forth. But you know what? They're wrong. And I'm glad for it, otherwise I'd be just a shut-in doing nothing right now. I have no friends. There, I said it; everyone I meet, just leaves after maybe one or two years for one reason or another. Or, oh, even better, if I try to do stuff in real life, good ol' Murphy and his law steps in to make sure that that is impossible; whether it be getting a cold, or being unable to head somewhere due to construction or so. If it weren't for the internet, online people or just plain email; then the few friends I get to meet for a short period of time, would never have actually become 'friends', but instead 'people I met for one day, and then had to just say goodbye to them for good earlier than normal'.

So yeah; I want balance. Both real life and cyber world connections are good. Some people are forced to use the cyber world more than others, however. And the attitude a lot of people take toward the internet really gets me annoyed at times, simply because they don't factor in everyone. But the real world is good. People aren't always aware of what's good in the long run, but the real world is just as good as the cyber world... It just takes more time to see what we need to rediscover about it.

This is actually kinda funny, considering the day, but it needs to be said. Stop the madness; stop treating people who are on your side as enemies, and above all, try and just stop people from ruining the internet in general. Striking a balance between two worlds only works if one world isn't but a shell of what it could be.

Did EA think they were just going to sell, like, 256 copies in the States or something? I mean, TWO servers?!But seriously... Launch day - 2 servers for **ALL** of the United States?
This is really indicative of EA .. Let's only put a grand total of 5 servers online that can't possibly handle all of the launch-day traffic for launch-day... yeah, that's a great idea.

Oh, and one more thing - if you run through the tutorial on one server... And then go to another - guess what - you get to run through it again with no option to skip it.
