If I remember correctly, you can replace them with chips that can hold even more memory. Upgrading is usually expensive, and most people find that it isn't worth it (due to the fact that it can already hold a lot). Again, I'm not sure that is what the chips do. It was quite a while ago that my dad explained the details of a motherboard to me, and I don't remember which part he was talking about when he gave me those details. I'm not a computer expert either, so don't take my ramblings seriously.
