In order to comply with the Child Online Privacy Protection Act, also known as COPPA, the MLNO staff is requiring that all members ages 12 and under hide their birth year from their profile. The MLNO Terms of Service will be modified so that all members pending registration will know to hide their birth year if they fit into the affected demographic.
A member may wish to reveal their birth year as soon as they reach their 13th birthday. You are allowed to keep your birth month and day if you wish, so that you will still receive a birthday notification on here.
The MLNO staff will give all members ages 12 and under one week to remove their birth year from their profile. Please try to remove your birth year by January 16th, 2010.

This is ridiculous, you can even see ages on LEGO's OWN website.
I am NOT hiding MY age. My age is my age, and it is up to me IF I WANT TO HIDE IT or not.

R8, not sure where you got your information, but I'd like to provide a bit of perspective. Yes COPPA is a US law, but COPPA applies to commercial websites directed at children. MLNO to my knowledge isn't a commercial website. COPPA does require that website operators keep PII data (Personally Identifiable Information (name, address, b-day/age, email address)) private so that their information isn't exploited. SMF terms of service does mention that creators of their sites should not be below 13, but doesn't mention users. aka (By accepting these Terms, the creator of the board (Board Owner) agrees that that they are at least thirteen (13) years of age. Unauthorized underage Users will be have their boards and accounts terminated or suspended without notice upon discovery.) http://www.smfforfree.com/terms.phpMLN Team does restrict birthdays from being displayed for security purposes and staff members must be above 13, because FM's terms of service does ask for staff to be over 13. So while MLN Team does restrict, it's isn't entirely based on COPPA, it's primarily due to FM's terms of service and safety / security. MLNO can of course restrict b-days for any reason of course, but wanted you to know it's not required due to COPPA. Of course, if you have additional questions, please let me know. |
