You do not need to know the past to get into this RPG. All you need to know is that: a. there were people who survived and b. things do tend to get very complex quite quickly. The unpredictable nature of RPGs also means that if you have plans, you need to adapt them. Also, the characters from the past? I think to both new and old players, it makes them an enigma as some of them haven't been around.

Besides, I think the last Space Wars was about a year ago and even I don't remember most of the details. Except for the characters, which is why I set this millions of years after.

Finally, not everything can be equal in power or it gets boring quick. Varying levels of powers makes it more fun IMO. Pretty soon we're going to have a very powerful faction, (not the one Raks and Havok are forming...) and believe me, it will contest the power of the Borg.
