"He's a new captain.  He's young, and he's got a lot on his mind.  The result is him flitting around from place to place, trying to do everything at once."  She shrugged.  "I grew up starships, and plenty of new captains are the same way, at least until they get used to the feel of command.  Anyhow...since you're here, I'll fill you in on our basic systems."
The night stretched on, with Dr. McFadden explaining everything from the medical record system to the use of the biobed to loading a hypospray to diagnosing common shipboard diseases.  It wasn't until the patients began waking up that the doctor realized she'd kept Etain up all night.  "OH!  I'm so sorry, cadet.  I didn't mean *YAWN* to keep you up so late.  You're just such great company to talk to, and *YAWN* I don't get too many non-patient visitors to sickbay, and..." she realied she was rambling.  "I don't know about you, but I think I need to get some sleep before my next duty shift.  It's...about 0400 hours.  Darn!  Oh, well, an hour or two's sleep is better than nothing at all." Dr. McFadden hung up her medical coat and walked Etain to the turbolift.  When the turbolift reached the deck for the senior officers' quarters, the doctor waved good-bye to Etain and headed down the corridor.

The turbolift doors closed, re-opening at the cadets' quarters level for a sleepy-looking cadet with pitch-black skin and orange eyes.  He nodded acknowledgement to Etain, and waited to set his destination until she had decided whether or not to exit the turbolift.  Just then, a figure exited Rakoua's quarters...
