Title: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 10, 2010, 11:00:04 pm Just post anything about running. Questions are good too! I run the 800m 400m, and 1600m at the moment for high school track. Anyone else in competitive running?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 10, 2010, 11:21:24 pm I am :D What is your best time for the mile (1600m)? Also, what do you know about peaking/peaking early?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 10, 2010, 11:30:03 pm My 1600m record is a 5:49 for now, but that was last year, and I was still recovering over a broken leg. I should be able to get down to at least 5:30, probably 5:10. As for peaking, that is when you reach the top of your runs, so if I peaked in two weeks at a 5:01, then I wouldn't be able to surpass that. (most likely) What is your 1600m time?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 10, 2010, 11:42:38 pm 5:34 last year, 5:24 this year, but that was a bad race ( got boxed in and had a cold) Hoping to improve a little in the track meet in a few days. And @Peaking, yeah that's what I thought, just wanted to be sure, my coach is giving me easy practices saying she "doesn't want me to peak early." I hope she knows what she is talking about XD Talk to you later, goodnight-
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 10, 2010, 11:45:22 pm Yeah, goodnight, and goodluck! =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 10, 2010, 11:47:58 pm Well, my last track meet was a very very long time ago, but some of my records:
100 yards 9.9 220 yards 21.7 440 yards 50.5 880 yards 1:57.3 One-Mile Run 4:42.3 Bear in mind that I was 5'3.5" tall and about 100 lbs...with very little feet... :P Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 11, 2010, 08:37:49 pm Wow, I had no idea they used to measure in yards :o And 4:24!?! MsRR you are so awesome! Wow that's just incredible! That's my new time to beat then. :P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 11, 2010, 10:24:33 pm MsRR - You must have been very, very quick. Did you ever win state or any other major event? How old were you (no offense) ran at those times?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 11, 2010, 10:26:33 pm OOPS.. typo... 4:42.3
I was in high school. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 11, 2010, 10:32:27 pm 4:42 is still really fast. Did you ever win state, or at least place?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 11, 2010, 10:39:10 pm I won county.. Dad would not let me go to state..
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 11, 2010, 10:42:07 pm That's to bad, I'm pretty sure that a time that fast would win you state. Actually, I'm almost positive... It doesn't seem like there is very many runners in the MLNO.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 11, 2010, 10:44:51 pm I think there are a few more.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 11, 2010, 10:45:57 pm *Waits patiently for other runners to comment*
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 11, 2010, 11:35:45 pm OOPS.. typo... 4:42.3 Oh then, that's not too fast then *is still amazed by how ridiculously fast that is* :P What was your best 5K time?I was in high school. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 11, 2010, 11:51:21 pm We didn't measure anything in kilometers back then....
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 12, 2010, 12:11:17 am We didn't measure anything in kilometers back then.... Did you ever run anything around 3 miles?EDIT: oh, my bad, I thought you said you won cross country instead of county, thus the 5 K, still want to know the 3 mile time :P Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 12, 2010, 07:42:32 pm My 5k time was a 19:18 for X-C this last year, but I'm already way faster, and my endurance is rising like crazy. What's your 5k time Micah?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 12, 2010, 08:23:38 pm My best 5K time was 18:43 from this last year, fun stuff, fun stuff. First track meet on Tuesday BTW, wish me luck, when's your first meet?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 12, 2010, 09:05:05 pm My first track meet is on the 20th, I think. (A Saturday) Good luck to you, be sure to tell me any PRs that you get.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 16, 2010, 09:24:08 pm Alright! Just got back from the Track meet, and might I say that it was the most fun I've had in a while! It was a small meet for 3A 2A and 1A schools so not much competition. Anyways, I got 3rd in the mile run with a time of 5:13 and 2nd in the 2-mile with a time of 11:39. Although with the 2 mile, since it was so close after the 1 mile, my coach told me to take it easy. So yeah, I waved to the audience, talked to some runners I passed, and yelled "Hi mom" on one of the straight-aways :P Lot's of fun, can't wait for the next meet, which, BTW, is also on Saturday :D Later-
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 20, 2010, 11:53:46 pm Nice, I will be anxious to hear more.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 20, 2010, 11:57:09 pm I got a 5:44 on my 1 mile, not to great, but the weather was nice!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on March 21, 2010, 03:34:30 am That's actually quite good, compared to us Taiwanese. I ran for 10 minutes for 1600 meters, which is one mile.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 21, 2010, 03:43:44 pm Lol. Maybe you should excercise more often lionytai. I'm hoping to get a 5:30 on my next meet. Oh, and Micah, are you a softmore or a juinor?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 21, 2010, 04:18:25 pm If I get on the track, I can run for about one lap. Then I slow. Then I walk for the rest of the run. It's rather pathetic. Last time, I hadn't even done my last lap and they had me get off because they were getting tired of waiting for me. :-\
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 22, 2010, 08:03:16 pm Maybe you should try training in the off season, although your team doesn't sound very nice teddy...
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 22, 2010, 10:15:11 pm @Mahri: I'm a Sophomore, and you?
@Teddy: I'm sorry that happened man, but Mahri is right. If you want to get faster then you should train off-season, it can knock lots of time off of any race. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 22, 2010, 10:17:31 pm I'm a freshman, so this will be my first time that I actually train in the off season. I didn't during my Jr. High years simply because I was too lazy, and I didn't between XC and Track because I was dealing with a hamstring problem. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 22, 2010, 10:20:18 pm Wow, you're fast for a Freshman! And I didn't run at all until 9th grade in Track, the most my athleticism reached before that was playing ping-pong XD
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 22, 2010, 10:21:16 pm Thanks! What were your track times for the beggining of your Freshman year?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 22, 2010, 10:25:08 pm First meet? Oh wow, 5:54 for the mile, and IDK for my 2-mile, I remember it was slow though :P And my last race freshman year in regionals was 5:34 for the 1 mile and 12:28 for the 2-mile. So, yeah, I was pretty slow =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 22, 2010, 10:30:13 pm I'm hoping to get down to a 5:15 by the end of this year for my mile, and probably a 2:15 for my 800m. I don't have a goal for my 2 mile run yet, since I havn't run it. Oh! My next track meet is on Friday, so I hope I do a little better. I'm running a minimum of 3 events this time. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 23, 2010, 12:12:25 pm I'm not on a track, it was something for my fitness badge in Scouts. And no, they are all very nice. I'm actually very fit, just have NO cardiovascular power. 4:)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 23, 2010, 11:06:29 pm Being fit is being strong in the upper, middle, and lower body, so you cannot really say you're fit if you can't run more than a lap. My guess is that you have a really strong upper body, but you should lay low on the upper body, and work out your legs a little more. Upper body muscles are more for looks with most people, and the legs are left out. Go to work out your legs, start with walking a mile or two at a time, and work your way up. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 23, 2010, 11:19:10 pm You can also increase you endurance by riding a bicycle at a speed where you can still talk, but not sing. That is the easiest way to judge if you are in the cardio zone, in any activity.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on March 24, 2010, 07:22:02 am Lol. Maybe you should excercise more often lionytai. Yes, I should exercise more, basketball is more kinda like my sport. And table tennis. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 24, 2010, 09:29:10 am Well, yes, I'm not very fit in my lower part. However, I haul bags of feed around, hand-milk 10 goats twice a day, chase, tackle (sometimes), and haul sheep around, and buckets of feed and water for everyone, every day. Sundays are not excemt from this, especialy not the milking part. I just don't usually have time to run or anything. I like walking though. I'm good at hiking.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Kritzelei on March 24, 2010, 11:40:39 am I've improved with my running, especially sprinting, loads since I joined taekwondo. But Teddy... 1 MILE IN 5:54? Whoa, the 1500m takes me ages... around 10 mins. I'm not really a long distance runner. :P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 24, 2010, 08:43:26 pm That's fine TBD! How fast are your sprints though?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on March 25, 2010, 07:47:23 am Whoa, the 1500m takes me ages... around 10 mins. I'm not really a long distance runner. :P Same as I, my legs aren't strong enough. I'm still 13, there's still a lot for my body and legs and muscles to grow.Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 29, 2010, 02:24:02 pm I still have to grow too, but I've been working out a lot harder, and trying to fix up what I eat. I've been feeling much better, and I'm so proud of myself... I now have noticable biceps when I flex. ;)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on March 30, 2010, 01:59:18 am Mahri, are you better than fast running or running long distances?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 30, 2010, 08:34:56 am You know what I do best? Sitting and watching things grow. ;D
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 30, 2010, 11:58:30 am Nice Teddy. I'm a lot better at medium distances than anything, although for anything 400m and under, I'm pretty bad. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on March 31, 2010, 02:02:26 am I'm not good at any running. But I've improved. Now i'm seventh grade, i did a lot better than in 6th grade
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on March 31, 2010, 02:50:02 am What I have always liked about running is how free you feel when you are running.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 31, 2010, 08:42:08 am That would do, if only I didn't get such massive side aches...
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 31, 2010, 10:50:06 am That's kinda why I run MsRR... When I'm running I'm... myself. There's no stress, and I'm just in my own world. Besides that, TEDDY! Sideaches can be caused by too little water, to much, to little food, to much, being out of shape, etc. So keep hydrated and run more often to lose your sideaches!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 31, 2010, 09:33:45 pm Hey guys, I just had a meet on Tuesday. Unfortunately, with my foot keeping me from training and the wind at the meet, my times were pretty bad for me =/ I got a 5:35 for my mile (slower than my mile in Freshman year) and a 12:13 for my 2-mile (not as bad, but still slow for me). I didn't do half bad in my placing though, because it was a very small meet.
@Teddy: Side-aches or side-stiches are caused by all the things Mahri listed, with especial emphasis on the water part. @MsRR/Mahri: I love running because of the "runner's high" :P It's great during and after a run; I feel like I can do a backflip or something :D Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 31, 2010, 09:35:30 pm Lol. Nice job! I feel like I can do a backflip too, but I'd probably kill myself if I tried.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 31, 2010, 09:38:56 pm That's kinda why I run MsRR... When I'm running I'm... myself. Sideaches can be caused by too little water, to much, to little food, to much, being out of shape, etc. So keep hydrated and run more often to lose your sideaches! You'd think, living on a farm and all, I'd be able to run better. But no siblings, so no one to chase... :-\ Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 31, 2010, 09:39:58 pm Hmmmmmmmmm... Maybe you could chase some chickens!!! :D :D :D
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 31, 2010, 09:43:12 pm "Stressed animals don't produce well"
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 31, 2010, 09:44:16 pm Ahhhhhhhh... In that case, you need a roadrunner to chase after!!!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 31, 2010, 09:46:21 pm *faints at the thought*
It is embarrassing when I fall over from side aches playing Capture The Flag... Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 31, 2010, 09:48:44 pm That's probably cuz you're dehydrated. In that case, perhaps you should guard the flag... Cya later!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 31, 2010, 09:50:56 pm Most likely... I should drink more cats...
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MÆLXTRØM on March 31, 2010, 09:59:03 pm Most likely... I should drink more cats... Spam again. I dare you.Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 01, 2010, 08:33:23 am No SPAM, please. Altough it is April Fools day.
When you run, how do you keep your breath steady? Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on April 01, 2010, 11:05:05 am Well... I think I can answer that at least!
Just don't try to breath hard... Allow yourself to breath deep inhalations, and shorter exhalations, that way you get more oxygen to your vital organs (like the violin). Has anyone else tried fox-running? It's where, instead of running heels first (cow walking.), you run toes first. Hey. Worked for me. My agility suddenly increased, and I could run distances I never could have thought possible before that. Next time one of you are on the track, I want you to run barefoot, toes first. Ignore the odd looks, 'cause you'll probably run faster than any of them. ;) Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 01, 2010, 05:08:03 pm I keep my breath steady by breathing in for 3 steps and then exhaling for 2. When I'm sprinting, it's more of a "breath as fast as I can thing" though.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on April 01, 2010, 08:43:07 pm I can't run on my toes or breath very rapidly. The fastest I ever breath is one breath for every two steps, and that's at a dead sprint. Same with staying on my toes, my coach had to crank the treadmill to 6 incline to get me even a little bit on my toes. And I think that you run slower if you hit heels first and run out of energy sooner if you hit toes first, the key is to hit right at the middle of your foot, or both heel and toe at the same time.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 01, 2010, 10:08:51 pm Actually, from some college coaches and some magazines, you're supposed to hit the ground with your heel and then go onto your toe to pick up your foot! Unless you're sprinting, then you only run on your toes. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on April 02, 2010, 08:22:45 am Is there a difference between running and sprinting?
So, it may not work for you, but it sure as heck worked for me! BTW...It doesn't work with boots on. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 02, 2010, 10:44:31 am Arrrrg. Rubber boots are terrible to run in! =P
And the difference between sprinting and running is that sprinting is running as fast aas you possibly can, on your toes, for a short distance, running is just jogging but faster. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 04, 2010, 10:16:16 pm When we exercise we usaully jog, not run.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 05, 2010, 12:41:49 am I think people run for many reasons. Some for speed, some for endurance, some just to feel the wind in their face.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 05, 2010, 08:11:36 am And some just to spend their time. I jog to exercise.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on April 05, 2010, 08:26:47 am I like walking. That way I can "Stop and smell the roses."
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 05, 2010, 08:33:39 am I just went jogging today---on a rock path.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 05, 2010, 08:23:53 pm I run for all those reasons MsRR, and teddy, I've done that occasionally too. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 06, 2010, 08:20:29 am Running on that rock path made my feet hurt.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on April 06, 2010, 08:28:49 am 0_o Were you barefoot or something?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: LordVaderRulez on April 06, 2010, 01:24:46 pm wow, I haven't been on here in forever.
Good to see a running topic, though. I run Cross Country for my school, each race is two miles long, typically mostly uphill. :P I only run the 100 for Track though. I gave the 800 up so I could particapte in Long Jump. (We need an all around Track and Field Topic) Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 06, 2010, 08:33:04 pm Yeah! Another runner!!! ;D ;D ;D How fast are yer times?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 07, 2010, 05:06:17 am 0_o Were you barefoot or something? No, my shoes were almost torn. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 09, 2010, 07:59:03 pm I ran a 5:41 yesterday, that's a 3 sec pr!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 09, 2010, 08:05:53 pm Excellent!!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 10, 2010, 01:05:34 am for a mile? That's quite fast, you must be really strong or have long legs, Mahri.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 10, 2010, 11:36:03 am Thanks! As for long legs, I'm 6'0ft, so that might help. ;)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on April 10, 2010, 06:15:25 pm Nice job/congrats Mahri! You are going to dominate my times in your Sophomore year XD
BTW Welcome LVR! I see you are a sprinter and a cross-country runner, nice job! Anyways, I just got back from a track meet, I beat my mile time by milliseconds at a 5:13 and beat my old 2 mile time by about 5 seconds with an 11:26. I feel really bad about the 2 mile though, I was shooting for a 11:10, I was perfectly on pace for the first 4 laps, but after that I had forgotten my splits and slowed down without even knowing it. I did some basic math and figured my last digits for the last two laps, but I didn't know that I had already lost ten seconds, so my last digits were fine, but I was way behind =/ Ah well, I'll try to get an 11:10 next time :) Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 11, 2010, 12:34:49 am Thanks! As for long legs, I'm 6'0ft, so that might help. ;) Wow, you're tall, I wish I were that tall. I'm only 5 feet and 6 inches. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 11, 2010, 01:03:58 am At first don't run too fast.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 11, 2010, 01:12:31 am Always stretch well and warm up before you run.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: lionytai on April 11, 2010, 01:23:39 am Make sure you have good shoes.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on April 11, 2010, 09:15:24 am I disagree. I think your feet are healthier if not confined to what I can "foot prisons"!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 11, 2010, 11:04:00 am Running barefoot is good for you, but you should make sure that you a have a good pair of running shoes before you start. And R8, you should try walking 1 mile at a time, and slowly move up to lets say 5 miles, (that should take a month or two) and then start jogging at about 1 mile and slowly work your way up. ;)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on April 13, 2010, 07:33:00 pm Anyone have any tips for running a mile? 1: Don't start out to fast, almost everyone does so don't worry if you don't start in a good place.I don't have very good stamina... 2:Breathing, it is very important to maintain constant breathing rhythm, find a pattern that's comfortable and try to stick with it. 3: Most important is pacing. Try to think of a reasonable time in which you can run a mile. Divide that by the number of laps and then check your time as you make each lap to see if you are fast and slow (officials will call out your time accumulated each lap as you probably already know) Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 14, 2010, 09:50:24 pm I'm running the 1600m and the 3200m tommorow, wish me luck! (And if I can break 13:00 on the 3200m, which I'm pretty sure I can, I get to go to a second meet on Saturday! =P)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 14, 2010, 10:16:37 pm Be the wind, young jedi.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 15, 2010, 10:00:53 am Jedi!!! I think that might be more helpful if I was doing the high jump or the pole vault. Lol, thanks MsRR!
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! My next meet isn't until Saturday, praying that I have good weather as thunder-storms are in the fore-cast =/ So, yeah, if you guys could hope/pray for good weather on Saturday as well :)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 16, 2010, 10:37:43 pm I ran a 12:52 for my 2 mile, although I wasn't running very hard at all, and I got a .3 second PR on my 1600m. I have another meet this Saturday, and I'm only running the 2 mile, so I'm hoping that I break 12:00.

On a slightly different note, but still on-topic, have any of you ever seen the movie Back to the Future III? There's a seen when the Doc walks into the saloon and tells everyone about the future and how they run for fun. The hilarious responce from one of the cowboys allways makes me laugh..."Run for fun? What kind of fun is that? Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on April 17, 2010, 08:13:35 am Thanks! Anyways, since my meet was canceled, I mostly just came on here to wish Mahri luck! So, yeah, good luck mahri! Run like the wind! @Legodac, are you saying you've run a 4 min mile?!? :o Or are you just asking if it's ever been done? Responding to the later, a sub-4 minute mile has been achieved with quite a bit of time to spare, I forget the actual record is though =/ Title: Re: RUNNING!!! Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on April 26, 2010, 10:39:25 pm @Mahri: Tie your shoes tight/don't wear sandals. Also, try waling backwards occasionally, as weird as that sounds, it works fairly well. I used to have tons of shin splints but I haven't had any since my coach started making me walk backwards before practice.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on April 27, 2010, 07:53:31 pm Three Shin Splints Stretches You Need to Be Doing
By Shannon Clark Platinum Quality Author Shannon Clark is a fitness trainer and writer for a variety of online and print sources, as well as a co-author. She specializes in teaching ... If you're currently suffering in pain due to this injury, there are three shin splints stretches that you really need to focus on to improve your chances of a fast recovery. By performing these shin splints stretches regularly, you are essentially helping to prevent muscle and ligament tension in the surrounding areas and relieving some of the stress tension this area of the body is under. Be sure you are performing a good warm-up before starting with these shin splints stretches, as this will further help to prevent any tendon or muscle tears. Calf Stretch Because the calf muscle has a direct role with the shin area, you'll need to focus on making sure this muscle is not tight or tense. To start this exercise, simply find a staircase or step that you can stand on. Once there, place feet so heels are hanging off the edge of it and slowly allow the body weight to bring the heels down below step level. Hold this position for at least twenty seconds, then come up and repeat again after a short break. Standing Anterior Tibialis Shin Splints Stretch For this exercise, you'll want to stand somewhere nearby a handrail for balance. Once you've found your balance, then you should place the foot you're looking to stretch behind the other foot, keeping the toe of the stretching foot rested on the ground. Once you're comfortable with this position, then you are to slowly bring the stretching leg forwards until you feel a good pull on the lower leg muscle. Note that while doing this you may want to bend both of your knees slightly to make it easier to execute the movement. After you're finished with that leg, switch legs and repeat. Sitting Shin Splints Stretch Finally, the last stretch exercise you should perform is one where you are sitting and place both legs directly behind your chair as far as they can go. Try and place the feet so that the front of the foot is touching the floor, toes pointed. This should have you feeling a good, deep stretch right in the front of the shin bone, effectively targeting the muscles that are involved with shin splints. So, next time you're finding yourself in pain that is related to shin splints, be sure you do not forget to do these crucial exercises. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on April 27, 2010, 10:23:04 pm Hmmmmmm... That's weird, I believe that I've do/have done most of those stretches. It's okay though, I'm taking care of my problem ASAP, getting a calf sleeve on Friday, and taking ice baths, and so on.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 01, 2010, 08:49:20 pm Hey guys, just got back from my track meet! I got 8th in the 1 mile and 5th in the 2 mile! If I get ribbons, I will have 4 8th place ribbons, 1 8th place medal, and (FINALLY) 1 5th place ribbon. It was a small meet, so that's how I placed 5th :P
BTW: @Mahri: How are your shin splints, man? Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 02, 2010, 01:05:52 pm They're alright, I'm still speeding up, and I can't really feel them with the tape. I got a 5:32 for my last mile, and a 2:29 for my 800m, I have to drop about 9 seconds for my 800 and 17 from my 1600 just to go to sub-districts though...
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 07, 2010, 07:35:04 pm Um, hey guys (and girls). As some of you may know *cricket* I usually run the mile and 2 mile. I've run the 800M once and that was last year. Anyways, tomorrow I run the 4X400M relay, I know this is short notice but does anyone have any advice?!?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 08, 2010, 10:28:54 am Run fast, I really don't like 400's. =P Anyways, I broke 5:30 and ran a 5:27 on my 1600m, and I'll probably get to run at sub-districts on Friday for the 1-mile and the 2-mile! (Which I also got a 5 second pr in!)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 08, 2010, 05:34:07 pm Thanks for the advice Mahri and congratulations, you're really getting fast! As for me, my team got last on the 4X4. This is no surprise considering we had Leg1: slowest guy on team, Leg2: 2nd slowest guy on team, Leg3: Long distance runner, and Leg4: me, also long distance runner =/
EDIT: Oh, I forgot :P Do you guys have any tips for keeping from getting nervous before a race? Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 09, 2010, 12:30:54 pm I always get nervous, but if you breath really heavy at the start line, it might help. What's your 1600m time now Micah?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Legodac on May 09, 2010, 02:27:05 pm Good luck, though you don't need it, all you need is a thought, the one that says you'll win.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 09, 2010, 04:51:13 pm Lol, there's gonna be at least 3 people at my meet that can run under 5 minutes for their 1600m. I think that I'll focus on running my own race. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 09, 2010, 11:18:20 pm Thanks for the advice Mahri, I'll try that. My mile time is still a 5:13, but I didn't run the mile last meet because my coach wanted to see my 2 mile time without it (the wind ruined that experiment =/)
@Mahri2: LOL, that's what my dad always says! "Run your race." Weird :P Anyways, best of luck! Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 10, 2010, 08:28:28 pm I guess that I'm running an 800m at sub-districts as well, this is going to be a tough meet. ;)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 16, 2010, 12:08:24 pm vhlsdhljs.... I can't believe this! I'm going to state!!! At regionals the top 3 in the 2 mile go to state. I was supposed to get 2nd by a good 3 seconds, or third by about 9 seconds (11:18 Vs 11:21 Vs 11:27). I was keeping an 11:20 pace throughout the entire race, I was actually 2 seconds fast. Then it happened, one turn then the straight-away. They're right behind me. I think to my self "I'll lap this guy in front of me and then dead sprint; they won't pass me on the turn." Half-way through the turn they sprint pass me, I was so surprised that I didn't even go after them for a few seconds. Finally, on the straight away, we formed a line (I was in lane 3). Nobody was falling back or moving ahead. At the finish line I lean. I hear somebody scream "NO." I get second by 0.2 seconds, the other runner got 3rd by 0.1 seconds.
Man, I could be a novelist :P Anyways, I am the only runner on my team going to state (1 thrower and 2 jumpers). Still, 4 people going to state for such a small school is pretty cool :D Well, I hope I haven't bored you all with my ridiculously overly-drawn-out post. Later- Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 16, 2010, 12:12:29 pm That's awesome Micah! My season ended Friday, I don't even get to go to Districts... Oh well, I'll be way faster next year, since I'm going to run in the off season. ;)
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 19, 2010, 08:05:50 pm I leave for state tomorrow, Friday at 4PM is the big day/time :D
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 19, 2010, 11:07:44 pm Really? I'm going to Districts with my team, (not running though) on Friday, and then State is the Friday after. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 22, 2010, 10:42:53 am Well I didn't do too well =/ I almost always start out in last and then work my way up later in the race, but I'm never behind by more than 5 meters. In this 2 mile race, however, I was behind by about 20 meters and was 10 seconds ahead of my pace. I was running so fast I got a side-stitch(side-ache)! Anyways, I didn't get last and I got a PR (10:56), meaning that I beat my last year's PR by 1:32!
@Mahri: Man, I envy you, your track season is still going :( Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 22, 2010, 11:19:09 am Nice Man! ;)
I almost got to go to state as an alternate, but my team decided last second to take a senior. :-\ But I still get to go to practice next week! :D Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on March 23, 2011, 08:21:11 pm Track meet this saturday! The team will be staying in a hotel overnight, so it should be tons of fun :D Our only over-nighter other than state :D I'm running the 2 mile and 4X400! What is your saturday looking like Mahri?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Teddy3333 on March 23, 2011, 10:33:42 pm Hi Micah...

Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on March 26, 2011, 10:14:43 am I guess that there's nothing we can do for now. Anyways, I ran a 5:26 on Saturday, and the same on Tuesday.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: LordVaderRulez on April 28, 2012, 06:09:00 pm Wow time to revive a topic....
Well this year, I started my high school track career. This is our second year competing in a league that is in California Division 1, the highest level of competition. Although I missed the first three months of my season, I ended up doing ok. I hope to improve to my times and spread to a variety of events because I feel like I have a lot of untapped athleticism and solid conditioning. My PRs for my three events this year were a 45 second 300m hurdles, 18 second 110m high hurdles, and 17'5" long jump. I have one meet left, the league JV finals. I'm hoping to medal in both hurdles and hopefully set a PR and medal in long jump (hoping for 18 feet). As far as our team goes, we have a lot of young talent. Our JV 4x1 team broke the school record, as well as the record at the Rocklin Thunder Invitational (42 schools). Our 4x4 team has three non-seniors and they came very close to breaking the school record and placed at the Stanford Invite (over 50 schools were there). We also had three senior girls sign their letter of intents to run track at UCs (one to Cal Poly, the other to Santa Barbara). At any rate, I can't wait until the off-season, there is a ton of things I would like to improve. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 13, 2012, 01:41:16 pm Revive a topic indeed XD
Next week is my last HS track meet, it's pretty exciting yet depressing at the same time =/ This year I had hoped to expand into some shorter distances (the 800 and 400) but some injuries and major inconveniences/sickness have led me to keep to my mile and 2mile, which is always fun :D I'm hoping for a large PR in the 2 mile next week, and I hope to score some points in the mile, I'll also be in a 4X800, which is my favorite event so bonus points for that =) I hope you got your PR's LVR! Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: MsRowdyRedhead on May 18, 2012, 08:08:23 pm It's good to see you are still running, Micah
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: LordVaderRulez on May 19, 2012, 03:51:29 pm Had our Frosh-Soph league championships last week, I placed third in both hurdle events posting several PRs (17.1 in 110, 44 in the 300). Also, our normally stacked JV 4 by 1 (typically running a 44.4) was decimated. Two runners were injured and another was called up to varsity. So we took the normal anchor (who missed part of the season injured as well) and put him with a pole vaulter, another previously injured sprinter (only ran at two prior meets) and myself (a hurdler and jumper) :o. While we expectantly did bad, I felt good running it and ran a good split, minus my horrible handoff, so I thinking about sprints next year as well. ;D
Revive a topic indeed XD I hope your meet went well and you set some PRs as well! I hope you keep running even after your HS track career is over, it's a fun and great way to stay in shape.Next week is my last HS track meet, it's pretty exciting yet depressing at the same time =/ This year I had hoped to expand into some shorter distances (the 800 and 400) but some injuries and major inconveniences/sickness have led me to keep to my mile and 2mile, which is always fun :D I'm hoping for a large PR in the 2 mile next week, and I hope to score some points in the mile, I'll also be in a 4X800, which is my favorite event so bonus points for that =) I hope you got your PR's LVR! Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 20, 2012, 03:00:32 pm I just finished my Track season. I didn't quite make it to state, but I did get down to a 10:34 in the 3200m, and a 2:10 in my 800m. Only a 4:56 for the mile, but I wasn't really focusing on that at all this year. =P
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 29, 2012, 12:43:55 am Massive congrats LVR, I don't understand how people do sprints and jumps, you guys are crazy =P
Thanks MsRR! @Mahri: NOOOOOO! You beat my 2 Mile PR! Curses! I never ran a legit 800m but my split in our 4X800 team was 2:10 :D I've got you in the mile at least, but I don't think I'll be running that at all next year so you can crush my PR's =P I was really sad that I didn't PR in the 2 mile last, last week, or, really the entire year. I ran a 10:40 at the very start of season, then coach unexpectedly threw me in the 2 mile after I had already eaten/I was still sick and ran an 11:16, then I hurt my leg/bad weather put me at another 10:55, then I paced a teammate for an 11:30, then I had absolutely no sleep after pulling an all-nighter to finish homework and study, putting me at a 10:40 at the end of the season, right where I started. I wanted a 10:10 and it was kind of a bummer since that's my main event; but no worries, I'll get to run it next year hopefully =) Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on May 29, 2012, 06:37:50 pm Hahaha, Yes! =D
Good job at beating me in everything else though. =P I'm hoping for a 4:35 and a sub 10 for my 1600m and 3200m next year. It's possible that I might focus the 800m though, because my school record is a 1:59, and I'll actually be able to lift next year, and I'll be training all summer and all winter, so I have high hopes for breaking it. =) What was your end 1600m time? Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Micah477 on May 31, 2012, 12:45:45 am Good luck man! Those are some crazy PR's you're shooting for, but you're the kinda guy that can get them!
My mile time was 4:45, it was kind of weird. I was just trying to win the race so I was way off my pacing - I usually stay in last and then move up - here I was just trying to keep up with the guy in first, but 1st and 2nd had amazing kicks, so I had to settle for 3rd =T Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on August 30, 2012, 12:57:13 pm Hey, XC season has started up! = D I have my first meet on the 11th! Anyone else?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Rakoua on August 31, 2012, 05:01:19 am I can barely run from my apartment to the store =P Actually, I can barely walk to there.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on September 02, 2012, 10:20:11 pm Lol, maybe you should hit the gym. =P I just ran 8 miles this morning at 6:15 pace.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: mtmerrick on September 02, 2012, 10:30:44 pm I have great walking stamina (3+ hours @ 3-5 MPH is easy) but I can't run more than a few seconds without gerring SEVERLY winded
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on September 02, 2012, 10:31:45 pm Lol, yeah, it's always like that for me when I start up running again. It goes away pretty quick though.
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on September 02, 2012, 10:49:14 pm I kinda agree; though I can manage maybe a minute at full speed?
It's funny, running's always been my forte, in a way. Maybe that's why I liked Baseball so much. =P Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Mahri828 on September 02, 2012, 10:52:12 pm Lol, I can't stand baseball. It bores me to death. =P Did you ever do sports in high school?
Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Magical Girl Mimi on September 02, 2012, 10:54:25 pm Home schooled, remember? =P So no; not really. Biggest sport was swimming; and that was only during the summers that I got to have swimming lessons or got to volunteer at summer camps.(Or, for '07, actually participating at one. =P)
Basically, the closest I got was Baseball, but even that was a good couple years before High School.(I'd say... '04 was my last year playing?) Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Rakoua on September 03, 2012, 05:13:22 am That was referring to my lazyness, not my physical condition =P
I can actually walk for days, since I go hiking a lot. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: mtmerrick on September 03, 2012, 08:03:41 am My physical condition AND my laziness prohibit running :P
Though, like raks, I can walk for days. Title: Re: RUNNING!!! (And stretching) Post by: Rakoua on September 03, 2012, 08:28:02 am With good music, anyone can walk for extended periods of time.
