Got an email back from the developer, and it fixed it! I'll bold the part that did the trick.
Hello Matthew, sorry to hear that and also sorry for your 1 Star in Cnet (: this is a freeware software, as it says it comes with absolutely no support, but i'm still trying to help my software's users.
I released a new version of RemoveAds (v1.1) almos a week ago but its recently approved on CNET.
There was no disable feature on the first version, accually i was forgot to add this feature (:
New version 1.1 comes with that feature but, it uses a backup file that located in RemoveAds folder.
*****In order to do disable that old version please follow these steps:
- If you did not delete "C:\Program Files\RemoveAds" folder manullay, there will be a file named "backup.ads".
(if you can't see the extension ".ads" first complete these stepls:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Show-or-hide-file-name-extensions)
- Rename this "backup.ads" file as "hosts" (remove the file extension ".ads").
- Copy that file.
- Go to: "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" there will be "hosts" file too.
- Pastle renamed "hosts" file here and replace it with existing "hosts" file.
After these steps, it will go back to normal few minutes later.
*****Considering if you removed remaining files in "C:\Program Files\RemoveAds".
- In this case go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc". Open hosts file with notepad and remove all the lines which begins with 184. (do not delete that hosts file)
If you have any further questions you can reply this email.
Sincerely,
