Alright, so I'm trying to play some HD video on my TV and I'm getting stutters. Every few minutes, the framerate first drops by half for a few seconds and then increases by half for a few seconds and then returns to normal. Going back to a prior point in the video and watching it again helps, but the stutters return eventually. I was hoping someone might help. The videos are ripped (yeah, I know, by my DVD drive makes a ton of noise, so...)

I'm using KMP to play the movies, but I get the same problem in VLC.

Any help?

I have a similar issue playing HD video in my tablet. It gets annoying at times, but I've narrowed to down to the GPU just not being designed to handle it.

My 6630m should be more than enough for that...and I don't see why it would happen periodically, and compensate for the lost frames when the stutter is done by speeding up...

the speeding up part is really weird... when my ULV GeForce compensates for the lag it just skips forwards.... maybe its just an AMD thing?

Hmm, I don't think so, there would be no reason for it other than to resync the audio... Anyway, my parents just finished watching a 3 hour movie in full HD and I didn't notice any change in the temperature of my laptop, so I wouldn't think that my CPU throttled or anything.
So I'm thinking software issue, maybe drivers? But I think mine are up to date, I think...
Also, I think it only happens on MKV files.

I'm still leaning towards GPU issues. Have you tried/can you overclock your GPU? I've heard that can help.

Can't overclock it, it's a laptop. And besides, I see no reason for various games that are more taxing on the GPU to run at higher FPS than HD video...

Hmm, I know Youtube does silly things at times with my laptop, doing similar things(Pausing for a few moments and then speeding up to compensate), but I think that's the CPU throttling or so(Since the fan turns on, and my leg suddenly gets hotter. =P), but that's not even HD, and is probably mostly because of the laptop not being the greatest. =P

Hmm? I more meant it blows the hot air out; and the vents are located right about where my left leg is. xD

Though, who knows, I haven't really investigated this laptop's inner components too much yet. =P It mostly just happens when I do something heavily graphics intensive... Minecraft's the main culprit. =P
