Haley didn't seem to hear Joe. Both her eyes were wide open, and she had a blank look on her face. A faint red light was visible inside the pupil of her normally-covered eye.

A cold, electric feeling covered Joe's body. Her muscles would not move.

U-uh...? Joe was totally unsure what had just happened, and wanted to try and help out, thinking something had gone wrong, but found she couldn't move her body... Which promptly turned to slight fear, as she worried that'd extend to her breathing, as well.

Her vision was filled with a red fog. Each breath was like filling her lungs with needles.

Mist appeared over the well. From within the mist was visible a group of men, leading a young woman to the well.
(Man): "Let this well cleanse your sins. Let it make ready your flesh, that the Gate may accept you as a child of the Lord."
The girl slowly climbed into the well.

The men vanished, and the girl's position changed, as though she had been in the well a while already. From the mist behind her emerged a transparent figure, darker than the rest of the memories.

The figure wrapped its hands around the bathing woman.  Black tendrils covered her and slid into the well. Its surface turned black and oily, but she seemed unaware.

The image faded. Joe's body returned to normal, and Haley quietly reapplied her eyepatch.
