I can say that Half Life works on an old laptop; I've played it before(But a virus killed the computer I was using to play it, so...)
Ah, I see. That's too bad. =/ I'm assuming you can't use a controller on the PC versions? Though, technically I don't know why that would be wanted, since the mouse and keyboard variant is one of my more preferred methods...(The Dual analog method isn't all that bad, however, I must admit. Better when it's in the Gamecube/Xbox style, however.)
