From an American standpoint, the "East/West" thing makes no sense. The rest of the West is to our east, and the East is to our west. (Yes, there is an XKCD comic about that.)
Could be worse, though. Australia is part of the "West" but the East is actually to its north and north-northwest. The rest of the west is much further to the east!
Basically unless you're from Eurasia East/West makes no ####### sense.
