The Spook's Curse by Joseph Delaney. A brilliant book, part of the Wardstone Chronicles/Last Apprentice/Spook's Apprentice series. It's known as
The Last Apprentice: Curse of the Bane in the USA, and it's set in the country and county in which I live in!
