i've really only ever heard of one minecraft mod, toomanyitems.

i looked it up, and, unless i'm missing something, it seems to me to be too difficult/complicated/risky to bother with.

Nope, you don't need to download any software besides Minecraft. That server is on right now, by the way.

If you're having trouble, try Hills of Moo by Vechs.  It'll help you get better at Minecraft.

Were you moving at night?  It sounds like you ran above a Dungeon with a Skeleton Spawner, but the dungeon had no legal place to put the mobs except aboveground.  Never move above the overworld unless it's daytime, or you've lit up the surrounding area (and the area surrounding THAT) with torches/glowstone/burning netherrack.  Monsters can only spawn in light level 7 or less, and skeletons, zombies, and Endermen burn in sunlight, so...

It's simple, build a u-shape a block above the ground (or the moat/river; if you want to collect the drops, you'll need to have water flowing underneath the lava blade toward your base, just be sure it's only one block deep so mobs can't swim under the blade).  Put a block under one of the sides, put a sign on it, and put lava on top of the sign.  Hey presto, you've got a lava blade!

hey, so does modding minecraft.jar break the online play? cuz it won't load......

Yeah, you have to delete the certificate, which means your computer will give you a warning every time you play.    The minecraft wiki has more info if you need it, look up "mods".

If your computer is warning you I'm pretty sure you're doing it wrong.

I have modded it before, nothing like that happens.

And you can play online with a modded minecraft.jar file; basically everything is handled on the server end.

The MANIFEST.MF file is unrelated, and simply contains information about the archive."

I don't have administrator access to my laptop (only to my Windows 7 computer, which can't go online). :-/  If you have a workaround, I'm all ears!
