Well, I'll see what happens; it likely won't happen soon, but not too far away either. I need to find out what works with my motherboard, too, and if it can even be upgraded.

In the mean time, if I really wanted to at times, I could likely play Minecraft on another computer here, but I'd like that to be a last resort if possible, it's definitely not mine. =P Wouldn't be full Minecraft still, but I hope to remedy that problem, I want to play on more than Peaceful Creative...

It also means that Creepers and skellingtons(</coe'squest) can get you easily. =P Classic worked on my laptop at about... Hmm. What's the one a step one or two up from tiny? Should I test it with the demo, though, to see if it works? It won't work on my desktop until I can fix the OpenGL problem(I wonder if Linux virtualization would help?), but...

with normal, you can see a decent amount before the fog hits, with short there's no distance, and with tiny you can see about 10 blocks =P

No; it's not really possible with Minecraft Classic, given it just putting you in the middle of a world... I don't have the full version yet, as much as I want it.(Especially after watching the first 22 episodes of CoeStar's let's play: Coe's Quest.) Will try that as soon as I can, however; despite the fact that I have no clue about mods for Minecraft. =P

mods are (usually) pretty easy to install. just open up the minecraft.jar and dump the files in.

yes, you are right, there are pretty much no mods for classic

short render distance + optifine would probably make for a playable minecraft 1.3 for you though.

I've seen fancy graphics take "supercomputers" to their knees.....

and yes, there are mods. LOTS of mods. seriously, if you can think of a way to alter minecraft, there's a mod for it.
