From JediGuineaPig in Brick Universe:

Quote from: JediGuineaPig
LEGO cuusoo is a site by LEGO that basically gives you the chance to make on of your mocs a real life lego set!
you first upload your creation/idea then if 10.000 people support your creation it will be reviewed by LEGO, if everything goes well and LEGO like the idea your LEGO set will become a real LEGO product and you will receive 1% of the total net sales of the product because, well it was your idea! Cheesy

anyway, check it out! it is very cool!

The site is in Beta, and there is a join link.

Wow... 1% of total net sales can add up to a lot...

I'm impressed. This was a good idea. It would also be smart for LEGO to allow instructions to be posted for the models too, so people can use pieces they already own. This would result in the website getting a lot of traffic from builders who are simply looking for cool models to build, and therefore votes and new members will come easier.

Right, I noticed people trying to bring back sets too. Fruitless labor, especially if they're thinking that they would get 1% of all sales...

R8, will you be doing this? Do you already have an account? Why, or why not?

Is it an official LEGO site?

I think it is, this is what they've been working on in secrecy.

I for one will make an attempt with my Dozer, still better than Lego's I think and hey, 1% of a million is 10,000 dollars

so I was wondering

I have just published my Dozer on CUUSOO, though they would not accept any username with the word Lego in it.
My username is Vegodac on CUUSOO. Wish me luck eh  Smiley

R8, will you be doing this? Do you already have an account? Why, or why not?

I've been thinking about it. I can say with great certainty that I will not be submitting any of my current MOCs to Cuusoo, and here is why. I see some of my MOCs in an artistic light, and some as a work of craftsmanship. The ones that artistic in nature are unique, and I am not very comfortable with the idea of having to turn over the intellectual and creative rights over to LEGO, and then potentially seeing it being mass produced on an assembly line. I think that takes away what is special about them by slapping a price tag.

If I do ever design something to submit for Cuusoo, it will be for Cuusoo alone, and not a MOC in its own respect if you know what I mean. I want to be emotionally disconnected enough from what I submit to be comfortable with giving up the creative rights to LEGO, and be able to see a price tag on it and accept whatever profit is made off of it. I still take pride in what I build, but I am also more attached to some creations than others that I want to remain inherently mine.

I understand your feelings; thank you for sharing. I also think that if I tried building for Cuusoo I would no longer be building for fun. Suddenly, my models would need to be perfect and I would therefore eliminate any creative touches that would have otherwise made my model unique. Playing with LEGO would become building for Cuusoo. Play would become business, and the fun of LEGO would disappear. Even if I wasn't a tempted by the money or the awesomeness of having my own creation an official LEGO model- which I admit would be completely awesome- the pressure when building a model would still be there. I don't know if I can build a model now without the thought of uploading it to Cuusoo crossing my mind... the thought of "Well, I didn't build this model with intentions of putting it on Cuusoo... but I might as well." Uploading to Cuusoo doesn't seem like much work, and who knows? you might end up with 10,000 hits, LEGO's approval, and a few dozen sets just like yours in the store.

Of course, I don't see myself uploading anytime soon anyway. My LEGO talent clearly lies in my Mindstorms projects, not the affordable sized models being being distributed. And while if I did ever come up with something cool, I realize now that I would have your same problem. I would be deeply attached to it. You have a very good point... of course I wouldn't want to see my beloved model that took me days to create being sold by LEGO with little work to no work being done by them. And without my name on it... do they at least send you a free copy? Box and all?

Ok, sorry about rambling on. I just want the best for my little LEGO creations and a good start if I ever find myself working for LEGO. And another question... I've seen LDD used for this. Personally, I see LEGO lovers finding solid LEGO models more appealing, whether or not they know... Would anyone like to voice their thoughts on that?

This is a little late I know and to those who don't like links, I beg your forgiveness. I will on this site always endeavour to send you only to trusted sites, by that I mean Lego itself.

Seems we just hit 10,000, check this out eh...
http://aboutus.lego.com/en-US/PressRoom/CorporateNews/article/370410.aspx

For those who would rather read, I direct your attention to the following...

A project backed by Minecraft developer Mojang has become the first user-sponsored project to reach the 10,000 vote threshold on the new global version of LEGO® CUUSOO, opening the way for a LEGO set featuring Minecraft to become a reality.

It took the project only 48 hours to gather votes from 10,000 fans of the project from around the world.

“We’re really excited to see the fantastic enthusiasm of the Minecraft community. This is what LEGO CUUSOO is all about, connecting people’s passion to the LEGO brick,” says Paal Smith-Meyer, Head of the LEGO New Business Group. “It is still too early to say whether a Minecraft play set will become a LEGO product as it still needs to go through a review and approval process to ensure it meets our usual LEGO standards, but it is certainly a lot closer.”

A go/no-go decision should be reached within the next few weeks. Assuming it is given a “go,” then development on any new sets will begin. During this time, LEGO model designers refine the product, while packaging, instructions, and marketing are developed ready for a production run. This will take several months.

LEGO CUUSOO is an idea collection system that asks the Danish toy manufacturers’ consumers to submit and vote for their favourite ideas for new LEGO products.

It can be found at http://lego.cuusoo.com.

The site is currently in "open beta" and has been well received by fans and niche interest groups eager to see their ideas become official LEGO products.

CUUSOO, which means 'imagination' or sometimes ‘wish’ in Japanese, has been developed with CUUSOO SYSTEM, a subsidiary of Japan-based Elephant Design that has worked with open innovation and crowd sourcing for more than 10 years.

The LEGO Group has worked with CUUSOO since 2008 on a Japanese site that has attracted hundreds of ideas and seen thousands of votes cast by a 35,000-strong community. Now the time has come to test the concept internationally.

The first Japanese product, the Shinkai 6500 submersible, went on sale in Japan in February 2011. The next Japanese LEGO CUUSOO model will be the Hayabusa unmanned spacecraft launched in the first quarter of next year.

It took the Shinkai 6500, 420 days to reach 1,000 votes in Japan. Hayabusa took 57 days to 1,000. With the launch of the LEGO CUUSOO worldwide site the threshold was raised to 10,000 to reflect the larger audience.

On LEGO CUUSOO, ideas that are supported by enough votes will be examined by a LEGO jury that will check that the models meet LEGO standards of safety and playability and support the LEGO brand. Consumers who have their ideas chosen for production will earn 1% of the total net sales of the product.

In the case of the Minecraft project, Mojang and the collaborators have offered the 1% CUUSOO royalty to a charity of Mojang's choice.

Here is the model that has the honour...
