^ If your going to try to shade on the 3DS (on swapnote/game notes) I'd recommend cross-hatching (1/4 hatching to be specific) on basic objects such as a cube, sphere, pyramid (be sure how to draw 3D objects and use a light source!)

As for a drawing app on the 3DS, I'm assuming you know about Colours 3D. It's $6-7 but it's a good intro to digital art without having to buy a $150 tablet for your computer, plus it's getting a free update in April/May (iirc).
