1. An MMO needs a lot of subscribers to be successful. As an example, WoW has over 10 million! "But Canama," you protest. "WoW is the most successful MMO of all time! There are less successful ones that have gotten far less subscribers!" 2. Okay, fine. Consider that TOR was really, really, REALLY ####### expensive to make. As an example, it had over 200,000 voice-acted lines, which netted it the Guinness World Record for "Largest Entertainment Voice Over Project Ever". That alone ain't cheap, and there's the rest of the game to deal with too. Industry experts estimate that it had the single most expensive video game development cycle EVER, possibly in excess of $200 millon. 500,000 people paying $15 a month ain't gonna be profitable anytime soon. 3. The game has been bleeding subscribers like a hemorrhaging wound in a body that has subscribers instead of blood cells. At launch, it had a million subscribers; we're not 8 months in and it's already down to half. There's two words for that, and they are "catastrophic ####### failure" (okay that was three) 4. When a paid game goes F2P within a year of launch, that is never a good sign.
TOR is dying like a guy who just ate an arsenic-laced cupcake and shot himself in the head, while hanging himself and lighting his hair on fire.
On the subject of MMOs, though, I'm looking forward to Planetside 2, a F2P MMOFPS that's currently in closed beta.
