Yeah, that's normal. The launch units had a VERY large day one update, probably to prevent people from actually using any leaked or stolen consoles to full capacity. Granted, it probably didn't need to be quite so huge, but it is. It may also be downloading a second update, since I believe a patch to finally add in Nintendo TVii was released recently.

That said; you can play while it's downloading, IIRC. I could be wrong, since I haven't got one still, but...

Well, considering the firmware's size is 3.4 something GB to download, it's no wonder. It's like complaining that Windows 7 takes 3 hours to install, if it's the same size. =P Because that's basically what's happening, it's installing the full OS, just like you'd see on a new computer. Newer models in the spring will have it built in, apparently.

Windows 7 is bigger than that, and it's installing off a disk or flash drive. A lot of people have slow internet speeds (I get 1 mbps on a good day) or worse, monthly caps.

That's actually a valid point, Canama. If it's that big; I kinda question why they couldn't just put the bulk of the data on an install disk, and then just pull a Windows for the install, and install off the disk. If there's anything they need to have day one, they can add that in a Day one patch. But not for 3 gigs.

MsRR: The problem is; I think that all consoles will go that route for this generation. Sony already technically does it, as both consoles don't 'require' the patch to actually play the game, and it can download in the background. It's just for if you wanna get started with the Miiverse out of the box. Which, again, Sony already requires. The big thing pretty much comes down to pre-launch theft. The stores stocked them a freaking week in advance. Sure, stores need to have them ready for launch, but it also needs to fall to the manufacturers to make sure that it's not just sitting on shelves gathering dust a week in advance. But yeah, if someone had've gotten it before then, it would've pretty much just been able to play the games, if the person even had any(But since stores had those too...); and if Nintendo were smart, they'd notice the dates(Provided the people also didn't think ahead there), and start to get suspicious.

... I forgot where I was going with that. =P
