No... that is just the tip of the iceberg..
Regardless of anything else, single source single supply does NOT breed better service or prices...ever

As for the all in mandate.... well that just goes against pretty much every tenet of freedom I can think of. If a product has value no one has to be forced to buy it. Look at what we spend on LEGO for instance.. vs inferior bricks from other makers...

This law will be forcing a 25 year old man in good health who makes 25,000 a year and has no family or plans for a family to spend at least 10% of his income on insurance that covers childbirth, abortion, pediatrics and many other things he will never use, and which has a deductible that is over the amount he spends for healthcare now without insurance. And if he does not do that, he will still pay, but get nothing for it...  Seriously. I feel like I fell down the wrong rabbit hole.

About MsRR's post on healthcare...

The point of insurance is that everyone pays in so that the cost of medical care is spread around. It's like a lottery. If it's a choice whether to pay in, then only people who pay in should receive healthcare. Or else pay for their own--but doing so is impossibly expensive for many people. We already have laws so doctors have to treat people, and if we have universal healthcare everyone has to pay for it.

One problem with medical care is that capitalism won't foster equality of care since some operations have net losses economically. Healthcare laws are (sometimes) intended to combat a free market in order to provide care where it's not fiscally advantageous. The cost of that care has to be paid, and having a single source is supposed to spread the cost around fairly.

I'm not saying Obamacare is the best way, or that it works, or even that universal, equal healthcare is right, but I just thought I'd mention that Smiley

Knightsfan, you seem to share the common misconception that care is involved here... it is not. This is insurance and if it was a good thing people wouldn't be forced to buy it.
SO FAR over 200 MILLION people have LOST health care insurance they actually LIKED... and fewer than 10 million of the 40 who were targeted have signed up. =((

Also it was a fallacy that healthcare was not available to that number of people. MANY clinics are free to those in need .

200 million seems a bit high... Forbes says the number's around 5 million, and the GOP claims another 100 million will lost theirs. But anyway, I'm not supporting Obamacare, I'm just pointing out issues with our previous system.

Care and insurance are linked. If a clinic cares for people who can't pay, there's a deficit. That's where insurance comes in. Everyone pays in, and the money goes to help the unlucky few who have expensive accidents. The idea is to universalize both the cost and care. If everyone has a right to equal care, everyone has a responsibility to share equal cost. You can dispute everyone's right to care, which would be what a free market approach would say. There's also debate about which operations are basic rights (eg abortion), but I think that's a separate issue.

Like you said, there are free clinics, which basically means that someone else is paying for them. Having universal, centralized health insurance is one way of making sure that the cost of those free clinics is spread fairly.

I think the real problem is that America supports conflicting ideas: freedom, capitalism, and equality. The freedom to choose a healthcare provider in a free market will inevitably give better care to the wealthy, which is unequal.

Also, many hospitals and doctors have opted OUT.. or have dropped out.

BTW Just because one person is wealthy does not mean another need be poor. There is plenty of money for people who are willing to actually WORK for it.
Equality does NOT mean equality of goods, possessions or income, it means equality of OPPORTUNITY. For peoplw who are willing to WORK.  The only only only people who should be on public assistance for more than a few months are legitimately disabled people, vets or otherwise. Women need to name the father of their kids and that person needs to be responsible for the child. If they can't they need to go to work.   The wealthy will have better healthcare anyhow, because none of them will use obamacare. They will pay the fine. The senators and representatives who voted for it are exempt, and so are the Obama's themselves. That leaves the rest with this mess.
MY insurance was cancelled..  my son's cost for his company policy almost DOUBLED.

Until you are actually PAYING for insurance, you won't get it.

And BTW
Regardless of anything else, single source single supply does NOT breed better service or prices. When there is no incentive for doing better, most do the minimum to get by.  We went from multiple vendors for trash pickup to one some time back.. Service went down almost instantly, and prices have continued to rise..problems are treated as if they are an intrusion. And that's just trash.

As for all in or mandated purchase.. well that just goes against pretty much every tenet of freedom I can think of. If a product has value no one has to be forced to buy it. Look at what we spend on LEGO for instance.. vs inferior bricks from other makers... willingly.

Those who want everyone to HAVE equally need to be ready to PAY equally... or move to a communist country.
