I disabled Windows Vista's search indexing. Just right click on the folder you want to remove from the indexing, click "Advanced", and uncheck the box that says "index this folder for fast searching". (You'll probably just want to do that for the whole drive, I can't do mine that way because I'm not an admin on my laptop.) Really, I should disable the indexing service entierly through control panel, but that needs administrator access, so...
Until I can get the full "service" turned off, this will at least help with all activities in the non-indexed folders.
I'm still testing to see how much of a difference it makes, though. It may or may not work for you, or me. [/disclaimer]
