All Kanto Pokemon are available with HGSS(Including Starters, and legendaries, sans Mew, but that was an event)

All Johto Pokemon are available with HGSS, aside from Celebi, which is event.

Most Hoenn Pokemon are available with a combination of three games, or at least HGSS(Including starters in HGSS). However, Regirock, Regice, and Registeel a not available at all within any of the Gen 4/5 games. And those few are all it takes, from the look of HGSS... There's Jirachi and Deoxys, but... That's obvious.

All Sinnoh Pokemon are available with D/P/Pt obviously. However, no Regigigas, unless you have the other three Regis, which aren't natively in the games unless you have the event Regigigas in Plat.(Though, you need an obvious combo of different games)

All Unova Pokemon are available with B/W, aside from those not yet released.

So in total... The only three non-events that can't be obtained using exclusively Gen 4/5 games... Are Gen 3 Pokemon. Hoenn Special Legends, to be precise. And given they're tied to the braille gimmick in R/S/E...

Also, good job on FireRed, I'm playing through it again, but the rare Pikachu is really hurting my progress... Again.(Did this last year too when I did all this to prepare for HGSS by recreating Adventures Red's team. =P)

The only problem is... I have no clue if only having FireRed will hurt me eventually, given I'm trying to get all the Adventures teams recreated.

But if you have wi-fi access all of this doesn't really matter from gen 4 onwards, as you can trade for everything except the 3 unreleased unova pokemon.

How far are you?  Seriously, if you have access to LeafGreen, play it instead.  The vast majority of the pokemon you get in FireRed is stuff you've already seen in Platinum.  LeafGreen gives you:

*Title splash screen looks better
*Easy female Nidoran (for breeding purposes); that is, you can evolve a male nidoran from the in-game trade and don't have to worry about being able to breed from it later
*Staryu line (one of my favorite Gen I Pokemon, just from its Brawl appearance)
*Slowpoke line (again, one of my favs.)
*Sandshrew line (not necessarily a favorite, but one I've wanted to try out for a while now)
*Magmar line for easy egg hatching, although since that's postgame anyway it's not that big a deal.

The only things you miss out on are:
*Skarmory (which you can EASILY get in Platinum postgame)
*Bellossom (which is easy from HGSS)
*Scyther (which isn't that great until Gen IV, anyway)
*Electabuzz (Platinum)
*Qwilfish

The following Pokémon are only obtainable in one game of this pair. In order to obtain Pokémon exclusive to the other game of this pair, they must be traded either from that game or from another compatible game of Generation III which has that Pokémon available. In addition, several Generation II Pokémon and a majority of Generation III Pokémon must be traded from a Hoenn-based game (Only two Generation III Pokémon, Azurill and Wynaut, can be obtained in FireRed and LeafGreen).

True, I'm just doing the same calculations Nintendo is likely doing, to see if there needs to be a remake of Gen III or not.  If it seems like there's going to be a remake of R/S/E, then I'll skip them so the experience is new for me, and I'll just skip to HGSS.

And I don't have access to LeafGreen, unfortunately. I'm missing that and Ruby... But LeafGreen is awesome(I regret the reason I used to get FireRed back when I got it... Should've gone for LeafGreen. =P), and if I had a chance, I'd get it. Though I'd need FireRed for the Green/Blue(Depending on which Translation you use... it's the rival/Gary. =P) team play-through. He uses a Scizor, so I could only use FireRed. =P

Hey, any chance you could do it as a Let's Play?  As in, record the footage and record commentary as you play, add the commentary to the video, and post it?  Even if you can't do that with the physical FireRed...I'm sure you could run LeafGreen on an emulator and record it that way...

So what do you think?  Should I move on to Emerald or HeartGold?

1. I could; but I don't have a good enough quality recorder, or a hosting account. Maybe when I start my Green play-through of FireRed, as that oughta make for some interesting commentary. =P

2. Heartgold. Natural progression from FireRed anyway, as it's the direct sequel. Plus the surprise boss at the very end would make it worth it too. =P

/EDIT: One other thing, about the play-through; one reason I'm hesitant for this is both that I already started, and also because I'd be resetting. A lot. =P

With every version of the DS after the DS lite (that is, DSi, DSiXL and 3DS) there is no GBA game slot, making remakes of RSE very likely, because most people who start with DPPtHGSSBW will have a DSi or better, and likely won't have RSE, so they need a way to make that region accessible, as well as certain pokemon from that to be available.

Emerald is my favourite pokemon game in the series, so its worth playing through (IMHO), but a remake is likely to appear in the future so if you don't want to know the story then skip it. (Although the story in each pokemon game is similar: young child gets pokemon and pokedex and is challenged with completeing pokedex and gym challenge. Child also gets riival and eventually gets mixed up in evil team plotting world domination of some sort. In the end its a happy ending. But each game has different twists. RSE was somewhat unique in this aspect.)

Well, I myself would recommend HGSS then Emerald; if only because that's logical progression(Since RGBY to GSC to RSE back in the old days).

But yeah, RSE Remakes are all but confirmed because of the little details, even if some people are just too stubborn to accept that fact.

Yeah, I've been playing through chronologically, minus Platinum (since that got me into pokemon in the first place).  FR/LG actually take place at the same time as R/S/E, and likewise with D/P/PT and HG/SS.  I've already started an Emerald playthrough, though I'm taking it slow; I'm wandering around Hoenn Route 102 trying to get Seedot and Ralts, so I haven't even gotten to Petalburg Forest.  However...how long do you think it will take before the remakes are released?  Because if it's gonna be years down the line...

Flipz: Yeah, technically they do, from what we understand. I was meaning more of the transition, but it doesn't matter in the end. =P

As for the remakes... I'd say by next year for Japan, and early 2013 for us. Unless Grey's released first, then I'd expect it at the next the year after that.

And also, there's supposed to be a shocking announcement next week sometime. So, since that typically goes hand in hand with 'new game'... That would mean either Grey or the Remakes will be announced. And the only way they could get around the typical period of release...

OK, so here's what I'll do.  I'll spend the next week trying to catch a Seedot (preferably female, since I think Ditto is not in Hoenn) and Ralts, since that's how long it'll take, and then when the announcement comes out I'll realize the time was wasted and move on to HG. And then find out theres a remake of THAT coming out as well.

Emulated.  Even if I could find an Emerald cart, my DS lite is having issues, so I couldn't play it on that, and I have no clue where my old GBA is anyway.  I'm just playing to experience it.    And there is an in-game trade...but guess what you need to get it?  That's right, Ralts.  Either way, I'm gonna be on Route 102 for a while.

if you're catching seedot/ralts for proper training purposes (ie: getting a good nature, egg moves, IV/EVs etc) I would suggestdoing that after a full playthrough, as getting properly trained pokemon during story mode doesn't work all that well.
also, the emerald battle frontier is cool, so i'd recommend playing through to get to that just in case remakes don't have the same battle frontier (that would ruin the games though).


BTW: if I got a 3DS, does that and pokemon white together support WPA encripted wi-fi? if so, that would be a reason to get it, as well as upcoming Mario games and Zelda games.

ZLS: Yes, that and White together supports WPA Wi-Fi. DSi and up supports WPA, and since White's DSi enhanced, it takes advantage of that.

Well, I'm nostly getting Seedot because it has a unique type; a Grass-type that suddenly becomes immune to Psychic attacks?  Yes, please!  (Though to be fair, I'm judging from Platinum, since the psychic-type trainers there were obnoxious and in FR they were practically nonexistent, being replaced by obnoxious Poison-type trainers.)

And I did catch a Ralts, so once I finish the game I can breed from him with Ditto for training (thus the other reason for getting Seedot early: opportunities for breeding later).

But the bug pokemon in BW are at their coolest level (scyther and scizor aside). Leavanny is one of my favourite pokemon from Gen 5. Terrakion, Krookodile and Golurk are the others.

Yeah; I've gotta agree with that. Leavanny is on my list of Pokemon to try out whenever I do another Gen 5 playthrough, whether that be for Grey, or if I get White at any time, or so.
