Well, here I go on my first epic. Hopefully it doesn't turn out too terribly bad. I will write precisely approximately 300 words every time I post. Word count doesn't include the date.

World Domination

  -Thursday, March 17, 2011-
“Oh, Mr. Fergus, there’s someone in your office waiting,” a voice said from behind.
“Really? Who?”
“No one here knows him. Tough looking guy, boots, cowboy hat, the whole outfit.”
Kyle was intrigued. Usually, things were peaceful enough around his office. The police could handle everything that happened nowadays and his department was hardly ever called in. In fact, his department was so out-of-date that nine and a half people out of ten had never heard of the National Detective Agency. Pretty much only the two dozen or so workers and a few others knew of this elite detective group.
“Good morning, can I help you?” Kyle asked, walking into his office.
“Yeah, I need a bit of help. Do you know anything about skeletons?”
“Uh, yeah, they are the remains of living creatures whose flesh have rotted…”
“No, no, I mean live ones. Walking around. Y’know.”
“Skeletons don’t walk…”
“These do. Here, lemme show you.” The stranger pulled out a laptop and opened a movie. In the movie, there were four skeletons walking slowly from left to right. Suddenly, one looked at the camera a charged! The camera, apparently, was now hanging loosely from a neck-strap, the owner of which was sprinting full speed away.
“Well?”
“What’s your name?” Kyle demanded.
“Mac. Well?”
“Where did this happen?”
“Mongolia, two years ago. More specifically, Friday, November 13, 2009*.”
“Is this some kind of joke?”
“No, it’s the truth, all too much so. I need someone who knows what they’re doing to come with me to Mongolia and investigate. Everything is being sponsored by Mr. Justice.”
“The billionaire?”
“The same.”

  -Thursday, March 24, 2011-
Two men stepped off the plane in Mongolia. They got their luggage, and headed for the mountains. In a few hours, they were stepping out of a taxi and starting up a... To be continued...

...nearby cliff.

  -Friday, March 25, 2011-
“Are we there yet?” Kyle yelled above the wind.
“Not quite, another mile or so,” Mac yelled back, “I think.”
“That’s only the thousandth time you’ve said that! I think we’re lost!”
“We can’t be, I know exactly where we are. I could put a pin on the place we are now.”
“As long as Asia is the size of a pin on that map,” Kyle muttered to himself. He trudged on.
“There it is!” Mac shouted from up ahead. He was standing in the middle of a field, pointing down. On the ground was a near-complete skeleton, missing only the skull. About three yards behind the skull rested, shattered into about a billion pieces.
“This is the unlucky one that got too close to me,” Mac said, “I busted him up real good.”
“Apparently. Now, what do you want me to do?”
“Help me carry these bones back. We’ll run a few tests on them and see exactly what these are.”
“You could have done all this without recruiting a detective.”
“This, yes, but there’s more in store for you…”

  -Monday, March 28, 2011-
They were back at the detective HQ getting the results back by this time. Kyle skimmed through and read the basic outline.
“Fifteen thousand years old… correct human molecular construction… Structure reminds them of apes… Hey, look at this. Here’s a picture of what this guy might have looked like with skin on!”
“Time to visit Mr. Justice,” Mac said, leading the way downstairs to the parking lot.
In a few hours, they were at Justice Mansions just outside Washington DC. on the Virginia side. A high, spotless white wall greeted their eyes as they came up to Justice Mansions. The perfect black pavement went straight as an arrow through a fancy black gate. As they drove... To be continued...

339 words in this part...

...up, the gate swung noiselessly open. A square mile of flat, green grass was behind the wall. The road went straight through the middle of this field, with identical cedar trees lining it. Small roads branched off from the driveway to points of interest in the woods surrounding the field. At the very center of the field stood the mansion. Five stories high with shiny windows, gleaming paint and a roof of solar panels.
“It’s been said that this house runs itself,” Mac said.
“I believe it,” Kyle replied, “look at all those solar panels! And I noticed off to the right was a garden.”
“There are four acres of garden,” Mac said, “Derek told me last time I was here.”
“Do you know Derek well?”
“Well, I saved his life once and after that he seemed to feel indebted to me.”
Kyle was surprised, but didn’t show it. This Mac was more then just a tramp after all.
“Hello there Mac!” Mr. Justice said, coming out of the magnificent front door in person, “You haven’t changed a bit. Come on business?”
“Yeah. This is my detective, Kyle Fergus of the NDA. Kyle, meet Derek. We traveled to Mongolia and found the busted skeleton. Here’s the report that came back from the bones.”
“Hmm, interesting. Nothing at all what I expected. I hope you haven’t alerted the media?”
“No, we aren’t that stupid,” Mac grinned. Now I’ve just got to find out what to do next…”
“I’ve got an idea of my own.” Kyle cut in, “you once made a program for the FBI, didn’t you?”
“I made several, actually.”
“I mean the one that could see through disguises. You take a picture of the criminal, catch some one and then take of picture of the suspect. Put both pictures into the program, and it tells you whether it’s the same person or not.”
“Lemme think… Oh yes! I think I remember. Well, what about it?”
“We need to use it. I think I know what to do next.”

315 words here.

Derek turned and led the way inside. The interior of the mansion was even better then the outside. Not a speck of dust anywhere. After going up a spiral staircase to the fifth floor, “My personal living floor” Derek explained, they went down a hall and turned into a room. Inside was a chair, desk, several large electronic appliances and a window. The view looked out back where there was a swimming pool, a bit of grass and then woods. The computer was on, so Derek simply touched the mouse and it was ready to go. He searched around through some well-organized files and found the program.
“Here it is, Kyle. Now, what do you want to do?”
“You got a scanner anywhere?”
“Of course. Right here,” Derek pointed to one of the other appliances. Kyle scanned the picture of the skeleton with flesh, and put the picture into the program. Then, he searched on wikipedia until he found a picture he liked. He plugged it into the program.
“Oh, I get it!” Mac said, “you’re trying to find a similarity. But why?”
“Just  a theory I have,” Kyle explained, reading the results and looking up another prehistoric human. “When we know about what kind of human this used to be, we can visit that part of the world. Then we’ll see what’s going on.”
“Sounds alright,” Derek said, “but how do you know that thing used to be human? Can’t it just be a robot?”
“Yes, I suppose so, but results from my department say it was a real human being about fifteen thousand years ago. We can prove whether that is true or false when we get to Russia.”

  -Wednesday, March 30, 2011-
“Skeletons?” the manager of the museum said, “Yes, we have a few.”
“No, I mean are there many outside,” Dash said in broken Russian.
“No, for some odd reason they seem to be disappearing.”

292 words.

“Disappearing?”
“Yes. A hiker found a cave with three skeletons in it. He reported it to this museum, but when we got there they were gone! All three of them. Instances like that have happened all over this part of the country.”
“Strange… could they have been stolen?”
“But who would do something like that? They are useless except to exhibit.”
Derek had his own opinions on that, but he kept silent. They can also be used for scaring the living daylights out of people, he thought.
The three men decided to interview one of the hikers. Kyle’s identification was enough to let them into the register, and later into the man’s house.
“Three skeletons,” he said, “museum would have paid me money for them. What happened? Some one stole them.” He said.
“Could you take us to the spot?” Derek asked.
“You have money?” the man asked.
“Yes.”

  -Thursday, March 31, 2011-
A small hole the ground loomed in front of them. It was just big enough for all four to get in together, but only Kyle went in. He quickly surveyed the ground, not daring to hope for the prints that could have been left. After all, it was five days since the robbery and most likely plenty of people had trampled any available marks. Then, suddenly, he saw it. A small piece of metal! Maybe, just maybe… He carefully brushed the dirt away, and picked it up in his gloved hands.
“Mac, take this thing carefully and see if there are any fingerprints,” He ordered, handing it up. Mac went back to their rented car and brought out his fingerprinting set.
“There are,” he called, “Derek, come here will you?”
“What is it?”
“Can you hack the city’s network?”
“Can a bird fly?”

305 words.

"Well, see if these fingerprints match anything you can find. Kyle, keep looking around in that pit. I’ll watch for police.”
A few hours later, they were reading the profile of their finger printer. He was an American scientist who worked in a new project to try to create life.
“I think that explains everything,” Derek said glumly.
“I don’t,” Kyle said, “that’s a national project, not international. Whoever this guy is, he’s got no right to go to Russia and dig up bones. I think it’s time to get back to Colorado and check out this project.”

   -Sunday, April 3, 2011-
“Just our luck. It’s closed on Sunday,” Derek sat down on a nearby bench.
“I’ll bet there are security guards,” Kyle said.
“Yeah, let’s try breaking in and see what happens,” Mac grumbled, “security guards won’t know what’s going on.”
“No, but maybe they’ll get us the contact info for the head scientist. Come on, let’s circle the building.”
“I’ll guard the car,” Derek said quickly as he jumped back into their vehicle.
They circled the entire fenced in area – about ten miles – without seeing a sign of life. Mac finally convinced Kyle to break in. “Your ID will cover us,” he said.
“So where should we start?”
“The front, where’d you think? We’d have to waste another three hours just hiking around back again. Okay, I think we’ve got at least a thousand feet of rope in the car. We’ll break in top story window right there.” Mac grabbed the rope and headed for the building. He skillfully slung one end of the rope up and over a flagpole on the roof. He tied one end of the rope around his waist, and nodded to Kyle, who hauled him up. When Mac was at the window, he stopped pulling and tied the rope to the car.

310 words.

“So, we’ve pretty much established that a scientist, alias Oliver Laerfmund, has caused the destruction of a dozen scientists at the Life Center. I notified the NDA, as you know, and they responded while we were eating. They’ve assigned me to track down Laerfmund with you two’s help, if you want to.”
Both readily agreed to help. Kyle had doubts as to whether they were doing it to help him or to please themselves.
“Good. Now, what’s next? I got a report from a doctor who examined the bodies at the Life Center. They were killed by various methods between eight o’clock PM on Friday and ten o’clock AM on Saturday. There was also a clock which was stopped at 15.12, strangely enough.”
“I’d say to assume the doctor is right, not the clock,” Mac said, “which gives Laerfmund a forty-eight hour head start. Were there any footprints dated to be after the homocide?”
“Yes. But they can’t be identified as any type on the market, public or private.”
“Any fingerprints?” Derek asked.
“None other then the ones found on that piece of metal.”
“Tires marks?”
“Yes, but they lead to the highway where they were blotted out long ago. Once again, the tires can’t be identified.”
“That leaves us little options other then sit back and wait for something to happen,” Mac sighed.

  -Wednesday, April 6, 1011-
Something happened quite soon. It was sooner and bigger then anyone expected, especially bigger. Thirty M82 sniper rifles were stolen from a factory, along with about two hundred bullets. Kyle and his friends were at the scene within forty five minutes.
“Tell me everything that can possibly be relevant,” Kyle said to a security guard.
“Well, that’s probably not much, sir,” The guard said, “I was patrolling my area when suddenly I was waking up staring at the stars. Something must have knocked me out cold.”

305 words.

“Actually,” A doctor said, “your blood seems to have been injected with some type of poison previously unknown to us.”
“Well, after I woke up, I immediately sounded the alarm. About half a minute later, Jim, the guy up just around the corner, comes running up and asks what’s wrong. I tell him I’ve been knocked out, and then suddenly there are four or five gunshots from the north, then another from the west…”
“Five shells were found on the north side of the building, and another on the west,” An inspector cut in.
“…Jim and I see a car drive by at about sixty miles per hour, heading due east. That’s about it, sir.”
“Very good. Mac, Derek, come on. We’re heading East.”
They got into Derek’s car and started off down the highway.
“Are you crazy?” Mac asked, “you’ll never catch those crooks this way. It takes brains.”
“Of course it does, that’s why you are following my orders, not yours. I’ve got a plan, you don’t.”
“Then let’s hear this brilliant plan.”
“Where can the criminals go with thirty large rifles? The police have set up a barrier of cars and helicopters. There’s only one direction left: down.”
“Tunnels?” Derek asked.
“I’m thinking more like caves…” Right then they passed a sign informing tourists of a cave. They headed down the exit ramp.
Soon, they could see a miniature mountain ahead. It was about two hundred meters tall, covered in grass, trees and rocks. They pulled off the road and hid the car behind a large boulder a few yards away. The three climbed stealthily up to the top, where they would have a good view of the surrounding country.
“Look!” Derek whispered, pointing down. A single car was parked on the other side of the hill, hidden under a large bush.

307 words.

Kyle pulled out a pistol and led the way towards the car. It didn’t take them long to realize it was empty. Mac closely examined it, noting all the custom features.
It was an old black Dodge Charger. Not a single glinting piece on it. The windows were so darkly tinted, it was virtually impossible to see through them. Derek whistled.
“Look at this engine,” he said, “never seen anything like it before.” It was a strange contraption full of pipes, wires and small canisters.
“I’ll bet it’s a nuclear engine,” Derek continued, “something we could only dream…”
“No,” Mac said, “it runs of some type of fuel, see? There’s a tank underneath the car full of... what?”
“Whoa, that’s a new one,” Kyle’s voice came from the other side of the car. He had gotten the door open without breaking it, and was staring at the skull inside.
“Must be an extra,” Derek commented.
“Yeah, their archeologist must have read the order wrong. What in the world?!” A board full of buttons was revealed behind the glove compartment as Kyle accidentally pressed a button on the dash. He pressed a button, and machine guns flipped out of the hood. He passed over the trigger, and pressed another. A trapdoor on the floor opened. He pressed another, and a spike dropper folded from the side of the car and stationed itself over the hole. Another button was pressed, and the spike dropper folded away, then folded back carrying a land mine instead.
“Nice car,” Mac said, “I think I’ll keep it. Could come in handy.”
“Meanwhile, I’ve picked up the thief’s trail,” Kyle exclaimed, pointing to a line of footprints, “come on! They lead into that cave entrance!” The three headed down into the pitch black cave…

  -Thursday, April 7, 2011-
A few hours later they were still in the cave.

311 words. Why is no one reading this?

It was one AM. Kyle was doggedly tracking the near invisible footprints with his flashlight illuminating the glistening walls of the cave. They had walked miles and miles, going steadily deeper. So far, they had only found one thing other then prints to confirm they were going in the right direction: a finger lying on the ground.
Kyle stooped and crawled through a narrow passage, then stopped. Voices! Harsh sounds in a language he couldn’t understand. They were coming this way!
“Back! Quick!” He hissed to his companions. He shut off his light, backed out of the narrow tunnel and stood aside. Soon a dim red light shone through the opening. It got brighter with the sounds getting louder. A few moments later, two men – or things in the shape of men, for they wore masks – came through. They were both dressed in black, wearing belts full of gear. Both had rifles on their backs. Mac waited till they were a few feet past, and then leaped on their backs.
A brief struggle came out with both men in black on the ground with Mac and Kyle standing over them.
“Now to see what these things’ faces look like…” Mac started, “Hey. Where’s Derek?”
Kyle looked around. “Gone!” He dropped to the ground and scanned the footprints.
“When was the last time you saw him?”
“Back at the car,” Mac replied, “but then, it was kinda dark…”
“This is no time for jokes! When was the last time you heard, saw, smelled or otherwise sensed him!”
“Er, uh… He was right in front of me when we went down that narrow part…” Kyle started into the tunnel, then quickly came back out.
“Chloroform!” He exclaimed.
“Oh no…”
“We’ll have to go in there somehow.”
“Check those unconscious guys, they might have gas masks on them. What in the world? They’re gone!”
