Very true, for both comments; it's something all the countries and states and cities trying to ban stuff don't realize. =P

And that right there, is the problem with the world. "Oh there's *insert problem here*! It must be the games that causes it! BAN THEM BAN THEM BAN THEM!!" Sure, it seems like a joke, but that's the third time you've made a 'well, games aren't that great' type of comment so far... =/

And there's another problem with that line of thinking, (Again, seems like it's just poking fun at it, but... It gets me a chance to rant about it anyway. =P) the people who try to get games banned, who use that line of thinking, don't even take a CHANCE to think about what others might want. I, for one, would be disappointed if games got banned. Because it's honestly one of the more stabilized things I know of.
69377

No one can ban games, in any case. It's like banning music: maybe you'd stop the huge studios, but there are millions of people (like me) who make games in their spare time.
69378

If games/music/any form of media was banned, I'd expect it to happen somewhat similar to how the USA's attempt at prohibition in the 1920s went. As in, a complete and utter failure.

Last I checked guns were not a form of artistic expression

Did you know that homes with guns are actually less safe than homes without?

Lesson is: ban anything that popular, and people WILL find a way to circumvent the ban, one way or another.

They are trying to BAN the sale of certain guns in some cases.. all guns in others.. there are over 33 bills submitted to congress, and some states have their own.

My opinion is that making guns illegal will work as well as making meth illegal... more business for the cartels, more crime .
But beyond that, the criminals will also know that while they still have guns, ordinary citizens do not...
Not pretty, IMHO

While I agree that banning certain types of guns won't stop dedicated criminals from getting their hands on them, it'll also make it harder for lunatics like that guy in New England to get their hands on them.  TBH, I can't think of a single legitimate reason for an ordinary citizen to own an automatic firearm, and depending on the specific model, even certain semi-automatics are a bit iffy--I can understand the need to be able to fire more than once at an assailant without having to reload, but at the same time too many available shots put it back into the territory of being more of an offensive weapon vs. a self-defensive weapon.

Don't get me wrong, I do believe Americans SHOULD have a right to self-defense, but some of the weapons available to private citizens are downright absurd.

That said, I'm not sure the government is competent enough to handle the problem; legislation rarely fixes anything these days.  Hasn't for decades.

The main subject people are arguing for is banning "assault rifles" and "high capacity magazines," as well as having better background checks. I am in favor of the background checks. However, banning assault rifles is almost pointless, because right now, assault rifles are used in approximately 3% of gun related deaths. More people (in the US) are killed with knives than all rifles and shotguns put together.

Banning high capacity magazines wouldn't do much, because a magazine is literally a box with a spring that can feed bullets into a gun. Take any magazine, cut the bottom off, and use wood to extend it, and you've got a bigger magazine (except for revolvers, which make up the majority of guns used anyway). It's really not hard, and I don't see anyone being able to actually do anything about that.

Those two together make any gun laws we pass incredibly pointless, except to infringe upon people who want guns for fun/hunting, which make up the vast majority of gun owners. What we really need is some way to change our society so that people no longer wish to commit murder, which has been happening, but too slowly.

We need to deal with the CAUSES of gun violence.. not the guns.

Instead of REDUCING funding for mental health issues, and adding laws and layers of costly bureaucracy to maintain them, we need to deal with mental health.
Many of the people proposing and writing gun legislation have never held a gun, nor have they educated themselves about guns.
They do not deal with the real issues because that is not as easy as simply passing a law that LOOKS LIKE they are protecting people, when in fact they have only weakened them.

They need to admit the mental health problems, and begin to address them.. without adding complications and layers of  bureaucracy.

I actually agree with pretty much everything Flipz said. Especially the last paragraph.

I also would like to say my dad is ex-army, and then was a cop for 3 years after that. (He quit the police because of bad pay,  BTW). He's always had a thing for guns, and Breez taught me a lot.  (Doesn't mean I can shoot with anything, but w/e)

First off, KF, revolvers are not used nearly at all anymore.  Pistols are. There a big difference.

There are VERY few fully automatic weapons in the hands of the public - the military doesn't even really use them anymore. And all semi automatic means is that you don't have to manually load each bullet. One pull off the trigger, one Bullet fired. That means pretty much all guns fall under that rule, except for pump-action shotguns and bolt-action rifles. Those rifles are nearly nonexistent nowadays, so banning all semi-auto weapons would basically ban everything except some shotguns. That kills off recreational and professional hunting, sport shooting,  and even means the police and military have to do significantly more training.

I also believe that the new gun laws are ridiculous. My father now will be imprisoned if he ever puts on the pistol grip chassis he bought for his rifle, which in some places isn't even considered a lethal weapon its so puny.

However, I'm off the opinion that, as Flipz said, there needs to be some sort of gun control. The fact that the average how can actually go or and by the same or better gun as the soldiers in the middle east are using is INSANE.

However, as Flipz also pointed out, I wouldn't trust any government official from the past couple decades to come up with (or adhere to) a gun control law that wasn't ridiculous.

The S&W .38 is the most common gun confiscated from criminals (according to Wikipedia). Maybe it's a smaller percentage in actual murders.
