This actually makes me want to read the series, just to say I have. What genre of book are they?

1600 pages would be rediculous for a book. I'm not sure you could read the book without cracking the spine (I hate when that happens).
When I read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo I kept the spine in perfect condition (nearly), and then my mom read it and ruined it...
